The game FlashInvaders forced me to revisit a lot of still active and visible space invaders in Paris. Also this one I took photos of in the Summer of 2007 I had to visit again to flash and obtain the 20 points. After almost 9 years this one in the 16ème arrondissement was still in rather good shape.

This one is the first of a series of CryptoPunks mosaïcs made by Invader. CryptoPunks is a non-fungible token (NFT) collection on the Ethereum blockchain. The project was launched in June 2017 by the Larva Labs studio, a two-person team consisting of Canadian software developers Matt Hall and John Watkinson. The experimental project was inspired by the London punk scenes, the cyberpunk movement, and electronic music artists Daft Punk. There are 10,000 unique CryptoPunks (6,039 male and 3,840 female), all of which are made digitally scarce through the use of blockchain technology. Each one was algorithmically generated through computer code and thus no two characters are exactly alike, with some traits being rarer than others.

But this Cryptopunk PA_1478 is not a NFT anymore! He stands now on a façade in Paris, just above the place where New Rose, the legendary records shop and label was. [ # Invaderwashere ]

The sea resort town of La Ciotat has been invaded as well. As we speak (January 2016) a total of 9 invaders installed during 4 waves. This one with FlashInvader colors was installed in the Summer of 2014. Just for the record, it was my personal 350th space invader flashed with the application FlashInvaders.

Mosaic art at ESA’s ESRIN Earth observation centre near Rome, Italy. French artist Invader is installing his art at ESA establishments around Europe and even on the International Space Station.

ESA has been monitoring Earth with its environmental satellites since the 1970s, keeping a constant watch over our planet by analysing satellite data to protect our environment.

The first space invader mosaic art was found by ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti during her mission on the International Space Station. She installed ‘Space2’ in Europe’s Columbus space laboratory. Since then, space-themed art has appeared at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, at our Redu Centre in Belgium, our space operations centre in Germany and ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands, and it even took over our headquarters in Paris, France.

Download a free app by the artist to spot and collect Invader art at ESA establishments and all over the world. Gain points by taking pictures of the mosaics and compare your scores.

The first 'wave' was before the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and as we speak (2015) the city of New York has been invaded 147 times spread out over 6 waves (the last wave was in May 2015 with only one additonal space invader). This one was installed in 2009.

Stewart is using the "FlashInvaders" application to gain 20 points. Much to the surprise of a passing local.

52 Weeks Project

A hot day in Paris, "Plan canicule activé", I went for a walk for a meet and greet of two re-activated space invaders near Monceau and Courcelles...

Location: Place de la République de l' Équateur, Boulevard and Rue de Courvelles, Paris 8ème.

Coördinates: 48°87'91"N 2°30'35"E

Reason: I was in this part of Paris to capture and flash ("FlashInvaders") PA_387 and PA_268 and while waiting for the space invader in full sunlight (see at the corner left of my face) I took the opportunity for my selfportrait.

Boulevard de Courcelles: Boulevard de Courcelles is a 1160 meters long boulevard in the 8ème and 17ème arrondissement in Paris. This boulevard starts at avenue de Villiers and place Prosper-Goubaux and ends at place des Ternes.

There are 4 métro stations along this boulevard; Villiers (2, 3), Monceau (2), Courcelles (2), Ternes (2).

The boulevard owes its name to the nearby rue de Courcelles, which itself derives from the fact that it was the road that led directly to the hamlet of Courcelles.

MARS_31 [20 points]

Fort Saint-Jean has finally been invaded for the first time since it was built in the year 1660.

Till August 2020 I found and flashed all 13 space invaders of wave 1 (MARS_01 - MARS_11 - 2004 and wave 2 (MARS_12 and MARS_13). But during wave 3 in August 2020 the number of space invaders went up to 97. In total 84 space invaders on my list again.

Second Best "52 Weeks Project"

Since I have been joining the 52 Weeks Project on Flickr it has happened several times that I had to chose between two or more self portraits that week. A difficult choice. The solution is to create a set of all good alternatives. Life is full of choices and sometimes a week has too much opportunities. This is one of those alternatives, the second best. And sometimes just as good.

PA_968 [30 points]

This space invader (location) has a rich history since the invasion in the year 2011. After it has been deleted it was replaced by a mosaïque made by LEGO tiles in the same year. After its removal in 2012 we haven't seen PA_968 till it's (second) re-activation.

THE INVASION OF CLERMONT-FERRAND

The first (two?) invasion wave(s) of the center of Clermont-Ferrand occured in the year 2000 and consisted 8 space invaders, 4 of them are still there (including 1 re-activation) and flashable.

In January 2016 Clermont-Ferrand was invaded again, the 3rd invasion wave took place:

"At the occasion of the screening of the very last version of the movie Art4Sspace at the Interntional Short Film Festival of Clermont-Ferrand, I have added 31 new creations to the city of the center of France. Among various themes, they refer to movies and cinema but also to what Clermont Ferrand is famous for : its gothic cathedrale, its volcanos, its Michelin factories and its Serge Gainsbourg street" (Invader)
