THE INVASION OF ROTTERDAM

In the year 2001 the city of Rotterdam has been invaded by Invader. It was the 8th city in the world being invaded. In 4 days Invader put 26 space invaders (1 hidden bonus) on the walls of Rotterdam. Sometimes hidden sometimes on very visible locations. In June 2020 three space invaders were re-activated (RTD_01, 18, 22) which made it possible to have flashed almost all 26 space invaders of Rotterdam. Except for the hidden RTD_26 which will never be re-activated because it was located on a wall near the Centraal Station. The area is redevelopped and the wall isn't there anymore.

Roadtrip [9] 16/06/2017

On the planning of my last day of this holiday and roadtrip was my ride home via a hypermarket in the North of Paris, Valenciennes and Charleroi (for the one and only but huge space invader mural), Brussels, Antwerp and Utrecht.

I left hôtel Ibis Nogent-sur-Marne at 08h55 and went to Vincennes to photoflash space invader PA_1282 and I revisited Versailles to find the one I didn’t find yesterday (VRS_03). I spent only 40 minutes in Versailles and went via McDonald’s Créteil N6 to Carrefour Parinor to do my shoppings. Finally left Carrefour and the région Paris at 14h30 to go North. Via A1 (Autoroute du Nord) and A2 (Cambrai, Denain, Maubeuge). At 17h11 I arrived in Charleroi to photoflash CHAR_01. Had my last meal in a very nice and new McDonald’s restaurant in Charleroi and drove away here at 18h31. Had a break at Oosterhout at Andy from 20h41 till 21h55 and arrived finally at home at 22h48. Driving 643.4 kilometers in total today (291 km in France [45.3%], 234 in Belgium [36.4%] and 118 km in the Netherlands [18.3%])

The grand total this holiday and roadtrip was 3,688 kilometers.

A space invader which makes me happy. Located on one of the natural hills East of Paris near or in Parc départemental Jean-Moulin - Les Guilands. It's all about a sunset, but in the morning this one is in full sunlight.

A re-activated classic sized space invader in the 10ème arrondissement of Paris. The original was located a bit (2 meters approximately) higher than this one. But this was the only solution as the new appartment building is built against the invaded building.

MARS_12 [50 points]

Together with another invasion wave in La Ciotat in the Summer of 2014, Invader put two new space invaders on the walls of Marseille as well. The game 'FlashInvaders' was just introduced, the reason for the 'FlashInvaders' Summer colors.

Marseille has been invaded 13 times devided in 3 invasion waves and the total points in Marseille is 220 points. The first invasion wave took place in the Summer of 2004 with in total 9 space invaders. The most recent one, MARS_13 (photo by Denis) near Gare Saint-Charles has been destroyed in the Spring of 2015 due to renovation works on the building.

A classic sized and shaped space invader of the first generation in the 3ème arrondissement of Paris. Never seen this one before. Thanks to the re-activeurs it is visible, capturable and flashable again.

Always nice to meet fellow space invader hunters at the spot where a new or fresh re-activated space invader is located. The gilets jaunes are everywhere. At the time I met this woman on her bicycle flashing numer 25 the yellow vests were just for your own road safety.

PA_25 is surrounded by nice street art (among other by ENDANGERED ACTIVISM).

Cours Julien was already invaded during the first wave in 2004 with two invaders but during the third invasion Invader came back to install this one of the wall on the Escaliers du Cours Julien.

Till August 2020 I found and flashed all 13 space invaders of wave 1 (MARS_01 - MARS_11 - 2004 and wave 2 (MARS_12 and MARS_13). But during wave 3 in August 2020 the number of space invaders went up to 97. In total 84 space invaders on my list again.

Due to the online smartphone application game FlashInvaders it feels like I have to revisit all still existing space invaders again. It was almost 9 years ago I visited this labyrinth space invader for the very first time (yes, time flies) but due to this game I had to revisit this one as well. I'm doing the game kind of district per district to not losing track which one I have flashed and which one not. A lot of the space invaders I have visited have been deleted, stolen or the entire building has been demolished but a lot are still there. A bit damaged or just in perfect shape.

This totally renovated area around Les Docks and shopping centre Les Terrasses du Port not far from Euromediterranée and Joliette has been invaded as well by this number 46.

Till August 2020 I found and flashed all 13 space invaders of wave 1 (MARS_01 - MARS_11 - 2004 and wave 2 (MARS_12 and MARS_13). But during wave 3 in August 2020 the number of space invaders went up to 97. In total 84 space invaders on my list again.

THE INVASION OF CLERMONT-FERRAND

The first (two?) invasion wave(s) of the center of Clermont-Ferrand occured in the year 2000 and consisted 8 space invaders, 4 of them are still there (including 1 re-activation) and flashable.

In January 2016 Clermont-Ferrand was invaded again, the 3rd invasion wave took place:

A new space invader featuring Cost. Cost is the tag name of a graffiti writer who, from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s, blanketed New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area with his wheatpaste stickers, spray paint tags and paint-roller pieces. Cost, whose real name is Adam Cole, is perhaps most widely known for his collaboration with another New York graffiti artist, Revs.

I saw this new space invader from the métro and got off immediately to take some shots of this one. I was lucky with the fact that this one was in full sunlight.

One of the 23 space invaders installed by Invader because of his participation of the exposition BEYOND THE STREETS in La Grand Halle de la Villette. It's all about the great legends of street art and graffiti The exposition is from 27/05/2026 till 30/08/2026.

CAZ_08 [30 points]

The lovely hill-built medieval village Saint-Paul-de-Vence has been invaded as well as part of Invader's project of 2007 "Invasion of the Côte d'Azur". For me the third space invader I found, captured and flashed this holiday. FlashInvaders says "Yes!" when flashing this one. According to my information it is still the original and after 10 years still in good shape apart from 3 missing pixels (tiles). The truck was standing in my way from begin to end during my visit to Saint-Vincent-de-Paul (40 minutes).

In the year 2007 Invader has invaded the entire coast of the French Rivièra. Instead of only one city he made a project of an entire region; Côte d’Azur. Spread out from La Ciotat to the Menton near the border of Italy.

The first wave consisted of 35 space invaders spread out over 24 cities with a total score of 990 points. In 2016 Invader put one invader up in Cavalaire-sur-Mer (CAZ_36) and in 2017 wave number 3 consisted another single one (CAZ_37).

Lots of them have been deleted throughout the years but there are already are about 9 space invaders re-activated.

Stewart 'flashing' his first space invader ever. Located in the Rue de la Huchette, PA_874 is worth 30 points and because it was his first space invader of the game he got another 100 bonus points due to 'a new city'.

PA_874 was installed on 18/08/2010 and is still active and 'flashable' as we speak.

PA_625 [30 points]

A camo space invader made of rather big tiles in the 6ème arrondissement of Paris. The original has never popped up on Flickr or other media so I guess this one was quickly removed in its invasion year 2005.
