Slow Shutter and Forced Flash.
Thought I would compare for myself how different flash lighting looks. The TTL flash was the Sigma 500 DG and and the other was the Vivitar 285 @ 1/16th power. The last images using umbrellas and softbox were triggered using wireless cactus triggers.
When you need to take photos with no preparation, on camera TTL automatic flash is your friend. The light is quite harsh, shadows are thin and well defined - great for the Andy Warhol style of photography.
Using a ttl off camera flash cord can allow you to do some sculpting effects and chose the light direction.
Bounced flash off the ceiling gives a blanket of light with shadows directly beneath the object like midday sun but softer shadows.
Shoot through umbrella and softbox create soft shadows but still sculptural like the off camera flash cord.
Round 3: Flash VS Smash. Well... sorry to say but Flash is just too fast for Smash (not to mention the look on his face when he found out that Gorilla Grodd was a distant relative of Smash). =D
Spent a few days on a painting course at RHS Wisley. Went up a day early to enjoy the gardens. I loved the striking purple alliums against the acid green of the euphorbia.

Took this as I was testing a lighting setup and found the effect intriguing, dof and the falloff from the ring light. I kinda like this look.
This is the original photgraph. I was stood under the A34 fly-over to try and protect the camera lens fom the rain which was tipping down. As there was bright light under the fly-over I used ISO 200, and flash, because it was so dark on the street outside my shelter. The car in the foreground was travelling way too fast and came a screeching halt at the lights. For a moment I wondered if I was going to be photographing a traffic accident rather than the lights and reflections from the wet street !
