Five Interlocking Truncated Tetrahedra #2 90 units 5-fold view.
A new wireframe design, one that I have known was possible for a long time. This solidifies the 20 Triangles compound into a sturdy, decent compound. It has a very Daniel Kwan-esque look to it, which is probably appropriate given that he designed the first 5 Truncated Tetrahedra compound. A cp is up for it, if anyone cares.

Vancouver's gigantic Five Sails harbour landmark now fully restored, glistens against sky and ocean. The project cost $21-million; 165 people worked on the replacement, installing 178,000 sq. ft. of fabric made of Teflon and Fibreglass. It took 120,000 labour hours to complete.

What place is this, to which the squalid street conducts us? A kind of square of leprous houses, some of which are attainable only by crazy wooden stairs without. What lies beyond this tottering flight of steps, that creak beneath our tread? – a miserable room, lighted by one dim candle, and destitute of all comfort, save that which may be hidden in a wretched bed. Beside it, sits a man: his elbows on his knees: his forehead hidden in his hands. “What ails that man?” asks the foremost officer. “Fever,” he sullenly replies, without looking up. Conceive the fancies of a feverish brain, in such a place as this! Ascend these pitch-dark stairs, heedful of a false footing on the trembling boards, and grope your way with me into this wolfish den, where neither ray of light nor breath of air, appears to come. A negro lad, startled from his sleep by the officer’s voice – he knows it well – but comforted by his assurance that he has not come on business, officiously bestirs himself to light a candle. The match flickers for a moment, and shows great mounds of dusty rags upon the ground; then dies away and leaves a denser darkness than before, if there can be degrees in such extremes. He stumbles down the stairs and presently comes back, shading a flaring taper with his hand. Then the mounds of rags are seen to be astir, and rise slowly up, and the floor is covered with heaps of negro women, waking from their sleep: their white teeth chattering, and their bright eyes glistening and winking on all sides with surprise and fear, like the countless repetition of one astonished African face in some strange mirror.

Five Points: in the 19th century New York’s most notorious slum. It is now in the center of Chinatown, somewhere underneath Columbus Park (built in 1897 it is one of Chinatown’s few areas of recreation, and is much used), which abuts the criminal courts (and their holding cells, still known as ‘the tombs’). The points were created by the intersection of Park, Worth and Baxter streets. For his film of Gangs of New York, Francis Ford Coppola recreated the neighborhood in Rome, using local extras. The original inhabitants were mostly Irish and African-American (and their proximity to each other was probably one of the things that shocked Dickens).
October 2013: A month in 31 pictures. Day 30. This is doubling up as a shot for PP camera school still life. Run out of time now so hope this one is going to be okay! I have used a the back of a bit of carpet as the backdrop.
The printing press used for the course is the Adana, a tabletop press for hobbyists; this model was introduced in 1953.
Pulling down the handle moves the twin rollers up and over the inked disc; if a forme has been inserted then the rollers will transfer ink to the type on their way down. At the same time, the platen is moved up towards the forme. Thus, once the type has been inked, pulling the handle all the way will create an impression: the printed sheet.

The five-rise is the steepest flight of locks in the UK, with a gradient of about 1:5 (a rise of 59 ft 2 in (18.03 m) over a distance of 320 ft (98 m)).

Five a day keeps the doctor away. That's the healthy eating message we've been fed for a long time now but according to the findings of the largest ever study on diet and cancer our risk of developing the disease is only reduced by 3% with every two extra servings of fruit and vegetables that we eat - so will eating our greens really keep us in the pink?
Scientists from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York examined the diet, lifestyle and cancer risk of over 400,000 people across Europe for a period of 8 to 9 years. During this time, 30,000 people developed cancers. The researchers then looked for links between fruit and vegetable consumption and cancer risk and found that if everyone ate an extra 2.5 portions of fruit and veg every day, it would only reduce the risk of developing cancer by around 3%
- but before you swap your carrot sticks for crisps and your banana for a biscuit read on ….
Three reason to keep eating at least 5 a day
1. Eating fruit and vegetables significantly reduces the risk of a wide range of illnesses such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity so even if the reduced risk they offer against some cancers is small it is still essential to include plenty of them in your diet.
2. The '3%' reduction in cancer risk that was reported relates to people who are already eating four to five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. This figure was found to increase to nine per cent for people who eat less than two and a half portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
3. The 3% figure can also be misleading as the research looked at the reduced risk of 'all cancers'. However, experts now know that a high intake of fruit and vegetables is more effective at preventing some types of cancer (those of the mouth, digestive system and lungs) than it is other cancers such as prostate or ovarian cancer. Therefore, as the study looked at the risk for over 200 different types of cancer, it is perhaps not so surprising that the overall protective impact appeared relatively low.
Down here in the "west country" we consider Cider a fruit so five pints a day sounds ok to me...

One of the regular musical acts at California Adventure, "Five & Dime."
This is a 16:9 ratio image. I used Nik Software's Analog Efex Pro to mimic an older photo and selectively re-added in the colors of the background (blue tiles, green leaves on the trees) and the performers to keep the image looking like I had captured the image on an older film camera.
In the fading daylight of a warm November evening ... the same train again in a different perspective and a few dozen meters apart from the last picture. The cars are empty and go back to Gummern in Austria for a refill with precipitate chalk for the paper fabrication in Kostrzyn (makes paper white without chlor). The signals are simple red/green lights showing maximal speed in the triangle. In the far background we see the border station Küstrin-Kiez, the former main station is now Kostrzyn in Poland with the Oder/Odra river as border between D and PL.
This Five-Spot Burnet (Zygaena trifolii) was photographed during summer in a meadow in Cornwall.
This moth is not as abundant as the commoner Six-Spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae), and only found at locations in the South-west of England and Wales, where it can be locally abundant in damp meadows and marsh areas.
My time has been taken up with other projects recently, and I have been absent from Flickr for a few weeks. All is fine, and I will catch up over the next few days.
