CHAPTER FIVE (5. Landing)

It had been a few months since they left the base. Tazznina was hobbling around with her guns loaded and ready to be fired, Damian was busy charting were they were, Ian and the others were keeping a look out for land while Keagan and Andrew kept a close eye on Tazznina. They had finally spotted their new base, it was on the coast of Africa's East side in Senegal. Hardly anyone was silent or idle. They landed and were met by the villagers in the land. No one could really understand them so Damian spoke to them in French, only one other member of the group, Ian, could speak a little of the language. Damian's hair had grown a little longer, but was still a curly mess, and he had a little stubble. He spent about an hour later he came back to the ship. "They say it's about two hours away from here if we go South in a van. Ready?" They all nodded and started loading the gear into three vans. Ian, Damian, and Tazznina were in one car with the hunting gear; Andrew, Keagan, and Richard shared one with the tents and food; while Richard and Joseph carried the other gear. They had driven for about two hours with Ian's car in the lead, the scenery hardly changed at all.

"Do you know their native language?" Asked Tazznina, slowly turning her map around again.

"Nope, they also speak French. I learned enough to ask them where it was, we also used a heck of a lot of signs." Said Damian, his dark eyes were looking at the map Tazznina was holding. "You hold it this way. Take a left!" Ian nearly jumped as he heard Damian's voice, then he turned the car to the left.

"DO.NOT.EVER.DO.THAT.AGAIN." Ian yelled to the backseat. Damian climbed into the front where Tazznina and Ian were, he sat in the middle. "Damian, I mean it. One more yell like that and you're out of this car, got it?"

"Oh, alright Ian." Damian laughed a little, Tazznina handed him the map. "TAKE A RIGHT TURN! IAN TURN TO THE RIGHT!" Ian turned to the right.

"Damian-"

"What? You said not to yell like I didn't yell, a shouted."

"Argh... Damian?"

"Yes, Ian?"

"Shut up." Said Ian with a hint of annoyance in his voice. Damian nodded. A few seconds later he spoke again.

"Take another left." His face was bright and had the biggest grin imaginable. "You never said how long I had to be quiet."

"Damian," said Ian.

"Yes?"

"You are impossible."

"I know I am, and you're fun to scare. You were about to miss the first two turns." They all laughed. Keagan called them on the walkie-talkie.

"Yes, this is Yorkie to the future of killing monsters speaking. Over." Said Damian, who had been given the nickname of 'Yorkie' on the ship. Tazznina and Ian sighed.

"Haha, nice pun. Over."

"Why thank you, Gigi. What is it? Over."

"Who the heck is driving your car? Over."

"Millennium Falcon, why? Over."

"Is he drunk? Over."

"No, Millennium Falcon isn't drunk. Over."

"Then why was your car making a bunch of sharp turns? It almost tipped over. Over."

"That was me, I was telling him to turn. I yelled it, then shouted. This last time I- LEFT TURN! TURN LEFT! Sorry, telling him to turn left again. Over." Over the Talkie, Keagan was laughing hard.

"Be careful! See you when you stop. Over and out."

"Damian Neil York, stop it." Growled Ian.

"Or else?"

"Or else I'll wring your neck after I pull over, then I'll burn your collection of monster journals you wrote."

"I think you mean it, I'll stop now- Take a right and stop the car." Damian said in his normal voice. Tazznina was just overlooking what they were doing, then she called the boys on the Walkie-Talkies.

"Take a left then stop the car when we stop. Over and out."

I’m wearing five necklaces today. For the record, I was wearing seven, but I took two off.

Beefy thought I should title this post: “Mr. T is a black man with a Mohawk.” Because that’s what I responded with when he told me I resembled Mr. T. Of course, I know it was the necklaces that drew the comparison. However, I’ll point out, once again, that I showed a great deal of restraint when accessorizing today. According to Wikipedia, it took Mr. T an hour to put on his jewelry. It took me less than a minute.

Sour Cream & Other Delights, RCA Victor, 1966. The Frivolous Five was a deliberately "inept" novelty jazz band, formed in the mid-1960s by veteran musicians Jane Sager (trumpet), Naomi "Pee Wee" Preble (trombone), Jean Lutey (drums), Frances Rosu (clarinet) and Rose Parenti (accordion).

Sager and Preble had previously played together in the band of Ina Ray Hutton. I think Rose Parenti went on to play Sister Alma, the piano-playing nun in the movie Sister Act.

The Frivolous Five made several TV appearances, guesting on CBS' Hollywood Talent Scouts in 1965, on NBC's Dean Martin Summer Show in 1967, and on CBS' The Jonathan Winters Show in 1968.

Comedian Cliff Arquette, aka Charley Weaver, may have had some involvement with the group. (Either that, or his appearance as a fellow guest on all three shows mentioned is a remarkable coincidence.)

Prop-Making Magic

A prop is any object used by actors or as set decoration on a film. By the time production ended in 2011, the Harry Potter Prop Department had filled five large warehouses with thousands of items (made specifically for the films or purchased from a variety of specialty shops) including 5,000 pieces of furniture, 12,000 handmade books and 40,000 Weasley's Wizard Wheezes products and packages.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Week 31 - Water

Ever since we started making an annual pilgrimage to Stone Harbor on the Jersey Shore, I’ve been trying to make a habit of rising with my camera before sunrise and heading out to the beach. I’ve had my fair share of luck over the years, but there are only so many times you can anchor a jetty as your foreground element and make a photo that feels different.

This year I decided to find something else to work with. While a small outcropping of rocks may not seem all that groundbreaking in terms of seashore subjects of interest, they were different enough for me to get on my bike at 4:30 in the morning and head down to end of the 7 mile beach at 122nd Street to stake out a new spot.

The photo-making that day turned out to be just okay, but sitting on the beach, all alone, in the pitch black, looking up the stars while listening to the tide roll in was worth the jarringly early alarm.

The five gold rings have now been added ...

And ... something I learned while doing this ...

On the Fourth Day of Christmas...Four Calling Birds

In the discussion dealing with the Partridge in a Pear Tree in the first stanza of the song it was pointed out that the gift of a partridge in a pear tree may have come about because of a mix-up between French and English.

The Four Calling Birds in this stanza is due to a mix up between the English language as spoken in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the English spoken today. It could also be due to a mix up between English as spoken in England and English as spoken in England's former colonies, particularly the United States and Australia.

When they get to this stanza many people may wonder just what is a calling bird. Most probably just assume that it is the name used in past centuries for one of our common birds that goes by a different name today.

It's Colly Birds, Not "Calling Birds"

The verse, four calling birds, is actually a corruption of the English word colly or collie. So, we are referring to "four colly birds" or four collie birds (the words to the song were probably written before the creation of the dictionary, so the spelling of old words tends to be flexible).

What is a colly bird? It is a black bird. In England a coal mine is called a colliery and colly or collie is a derivation of this and means black like coal. For a long time in England, blackbirds have been referred to as both blackbirds (as in the nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence) and colly birds as in The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Even in Tudor England these birds went by two different names so it is not so unusual that there would be some confusion three centuries and a couple of continents later.

While the name blackbird migrated beyond England, the name collie bird remained behind in England where, even there, it tended to diminish in use over the centuries. Today, many published versions of the song in the U.S. and Australia give the birds' name as calling birds rather than collie birds.

As to why the person in the song would give his true love a gift of blackbirds, the answer is that this would have been another gift of food. Blackbirds were plentiful and were a common food.

From the nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence we see them being served as a meat pie and this may have been the way they were commonly served. In times past in Great Britain, pies were a convenient way to serve and eat a meal with the meat, potatoes and any vegetables all cooked together in an easy to handle crust (forks not having been invented at that time, table utensils consisted of knives, spoons and one's fingers).

It wasn't until the British began establishing colonies in what is now the United States that pies (at least in the United States) evolved from being a main course to being a desert.

Actually the title is the name of the chain. This was an ahi tuna burger (marinated in ginger, scallions & soy with wasabi mayo, tempura fried onions, sesame brioche roll) with yam fries alongside a Maudite from Quebec. Very tasty too. You do not actually get five napkins - just one large cloth one, which is quite adequate.
