We have to be careful about choosing a fitting function. In this lab, we saw that the period of a mass bobbing on a spring is dependent on mass. But was it a linear fit or a quadratic? The quadratic was slightly better, but only slightly.
We don't typically want to add extra powers to a graph to improve a fit unless we have a good reason to. As you can see from this drawing, the higher the exponent, the more inflection points are present, and this simply lets the graph curve to fit the data that's only so twisty because of error, not an actual pattern.
In cases like this, we typically want to start with known equations and to try and derive an equation that relates mass and period. This is done in University Physics and in AP Physics C, and when we do this, the relationship turns out to be quadratic.
The key idea here is that as mass increases, the increased inertia makes the object "lazier." Thus, the same spring takes longer to change the object's motion

'It's been a hive of activity at Noah Enterprise Centre in Luton lately! Not only have the teams from Noah, Watford New Hope Trust and Crisis Skylight (London) been working on construction of a section of the central timber posts but the Noah Enterprise art team have taken the lead in the design and contraction of sculptural elements (including the wall of small views) as part of the industry and manufacture section of the garden. Its been a really great experience for all of us at Architecture Sans Frontières-UK to be involved with the Chelsea Flower Show for a second year and we're really glad that we have this opportunity to collaborate with everyone on such a fun and fruitful (pardon the pun) project! NOAH Enterprise are building a fantastic sculpture called the Wall of Small Views at the Places of Change garden. NOAH (New Opportunities And Horizons) is a Luton-based charity offering hope and support to people struggling against homelessness and exclusion. We offer a range of Welfare, Outreach and Training services to people suffering from homelessness and/or severe exclusion. We also operate a number of successful Social Enterprises which offer training and supported work experience placements alongside generating a much needed charitable income.
