The Ceremonial Guard continues to prepare for the public duties season of 2016. As they arrive from across the country, members are outfitted with the uniform of the Ceremonial Guard. Friday, May 27 2016 members of the 3rd Platoon, Public Duties Company, attended a fitting for uniforms of the Canadian Grenadier Guards.

Later this summer , Major Patrice Villeneuve, who was also present , will succeed Major Michel Lavigne as commander of the Ceremonial Guard. In anticipation of his appointment, the support staff took his measurements to size him for his new uniform.

Damien Guillou - PRB ist back in Les Sables d'Olonne to repair the Hydrovane attachment of the transom with his team.

Insights of PRB’s windvane repair: English transcript of Damien Guillou & Vincent Riou interview

Damien: Before hauling the boat out, I thought that the screw/axle of the lower starboard fitting came loose but discovered that it broke.

The windvane is attached to three fittings, one on top and two in the lower part of the transom. The starboard screw/axle broke, which is surprising as I have sailed the boat a lot, also in much harder conditions, and as well because we have not modified anything, these are all original parts and systems.

I was going upwind close-hauled in strong headwinds and heavy seas, which is not a point of sail where the windvane is under strong pressure. Once this screw broke, and we lost one of the three fittings, the rudder acted as a lever. I tried to use lines to stabilise the system and fit a new axis, to no avail in the wind conditions and sea state of that night.

Quickly, the axle of the second lower fitting broke, and the system started to loosen the last top fitting, which in turn twisted the backstay chainplate, so I decided to dismantle the whole

system and take it back in the boat.

This was quite a challenge in itself as the whole system with the rudder is long, bulky and heavy, I thought a few times I was not going to succeed. Conditions were not easy that night: 30 knots and heavy seas, I hove-to before dismantling the system, but it was still choppy…

Right now we’re assessing the damage, Jacques and Vincent who came from Port La Forêt this morning are finding what’s broken and why and we don’t know yet the extent of the work. What’s sure, however, is that we will find a solution so that the axle works differently and this does not happen again. It is abnormal that a 10 mm axis breaks like this, and we’ll make sure that I can leave with full confidence in my windvane system.

Vincent Riou:

I am working on the top fitting of the windvane that came loose after the 2 other fittings broke as Damien explained. We’re lucky that the damage on the boat is limited, so we can work on a solid and reliable repair within a reasonable deadline. We do not have a set time, we know that we have until Sunday 4:00 pm to leave, but the idea is that Damien comes back in the race asap so our objective is to have the boat ready by tomorrow. We will make sure the repair is stronger and more reliable, even though the preparation was made with the utmost care. Maybe increase the diameter of the axis? We’ll see.

This is the first shot of insulation. I used 3" closed-cell rigid insulation because it won't absorb moisture. This didn't quite give the R-rating that Coolbot suggests, so I added another 1" low density styrofoam (these panels are cheap; especially compared to the foil-backed rigid foam).

Flanged Fittings is the traditional finger-tight fittings for connecting Teflon tube and performs well in high pressure up to 1.5Mpa non-movable systems, the advantage is that tubing end will not be deformed to cause fluid leakage or less, the disadvantage is that a professional flange tools is required every time when tubing need to be replaced.

Specification of Flanged Fittings

*If the outer diameter of your teflon tube is 4.0mm, please contact us about how to order the right model.

Application Note of Flanged Fittings

1. Choose 1/4-28 nut when receiving port is 1/4-28; Choose M6 nut when receiving port is M6.

2. Before flange the tubing, ensure the end of the tubing has a clean, square, burr-free cut. This is very important, as the square cut helps the tubing make full contact with the bottom of the mating port. Neglecting to properly cut the tubing could lead to dead volume, resulting in peak distortion such as fronting, tailing or broadening.

3. Two-Piece Fittings Installation Steps:

a. Flange the tubing end with exclusive flange tool

b. Slide the nut, insert the assembly into the receiving port, pushing the tubing into the port until it bottoms out.

c. Finger tighten the nut into the port until snug.

Came across this today traveling a back road, literally in the middle of no-where. Evidentally a 15 year old died in an accident there almost a year ago. It just really hit me in a sad way. RIP.
