Upon our arrival at Picton, where passengers from the Tranz Coastal can transfer to the Interislander ferry service to cross the Cook Strait to Wellington; I spotted this forlorn ex-Virgin Trains carriage in the adjacent freight yard. New Zealand railways has purchase dmany such carriages in recent years. Some have been heavily refurbished and modified by the railway workshops at various locations around the country. All have been fitted with 3 foot 6" gauge bogies, the most recent refurbishm,ent are fitted with air suspended examples built in China! This shell has probably had initial works carried out in Christchurch including removal of the end vestibules in readiness for fitting a modern door system. It is in Picton for transfer to a workshop on the North Island for completion of the re-build.

Well, I might be in the middle of the chaos of the Timber and Working with Wood Show in Adelaide but I have also received a CD of building photos of another Eureka Canoe.
I have to update this post later with the full details, but the boat is glorious - she is painted a dark blue which really sets off the timberwork!
The picture series is on Flickr here - I've been through and commented on them all.
The photo series also covers a few parts of the building process that haven't been covered in detail before.

This Diva Challenge was brought to us by guest blogger Elisa Murphy. The challenge is not only to use 'Nzeppel in a monotangle, but to realize that it is made up of a "balloon" that doesn't quite fit in to the space given. Also, think of when we have felt that we didn't fit in to whatever situation we are or were in.
I think I've never fit in to the "normal" society. My dad was a California State Park Ranger and we lived all over California, moving to many wonderful places. So my fit in place has always been the outdoors, but not so much with places in "society". But, our not fitting in can be different, like the different grids in this monotangle. It can be straight and following the rules, or it can be variations of wonky. I think the wonkier versions are actually more interesting. I think I've lived my life in all those different variations. I'm sure there are more thoughts on this, but that's all I've got right now. Enjoy.

In 1961 the Series IIIA was announced with the Series II Sunbeam Alpine 1,592 cc (97.1 cu in) engine.
Externally and internally the Series IIIA was identical to the Series III. The improvements were directed solely at improving the durability of the car. To this end, engine capacity was increased and a stiffer crankshaft fitted. To increase reliability, the crankshaft incorporated larger diameter connecting rod bearings which called for modifications to the connecting rods and gudgeon pins. Modified oil and water pumps completed the engine changes. As a result, power output increased from 78 bhp (58 kW) to 80.25 bhp (60 kW; 81 PS) at 5,100 rpm and torque increased from 84 lb·ft (114 N·m) at 3500 rpm to 88.2 ft·lbf (119.6 N·m) at 3,900 rpm.
In addition, the Series IIIA included many detail changes such as an increased diameter front anti-roll bar which greatly improved roadholding, a redesigned clutch bell housing, a revised clutch assembly with nine pressure springs instead of six and a redesigned air cleaner assembly. Inside the car a fresh-air heater, hitherto available only at extra cost, became a standard fitting. All of these changes combined to make the Series IIIA subtly different from its predecessor and to give the Sunbeam Rapier a new lease of life in the showroom.
Maximum speed for the Series IIIA was lower than the Series III at 90 mph (140 km/h). It also took longer than the Series III to get to 60 mph (97 km/h) (19.3 seconds) but its engine was far more durable.
In mid 1963, the Series IIIA convertible was discontinued but the hardtop soldiered on until October 1963 when it was replaced by the Series IV. When production of the Series IIIA ceased, 17,354 units had been built.

Couple of quick shots with the Fordson tractor in place. The tractor will be completely re-done, including the replacement of the current anti-gravity front mount with something more conventional.
