Mapledurham House by Matthew Wood

Mapledurham House is an Elizabethan stately home in the English county of Oxfordshire.The property was first held by Michael Blount and has remained with the family for four hundred years. It was built at the time of the Spanish Armada in the classic Elizabethan E-shape. It includes a late 18th century chapel built in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style for the Catholic owners of the house.

It is also reputed to have been the inspiration for E. H. Shepard's illustrations of Toad Hall for Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, although this is also claimed by Hardwick House.

But after seeing this house, and maybe i am slightly bias being born in Berkshire. I am more tempted to say this is ' TOAD HALL ! ; )

First State Bank at the corner of Locust & Hickory, ca 1977. This was probably shot existing light, with Kodak Tri-X film (ASA 400). I imagine that the camera lens was wide open (f2 at a 1/30 of a second--but that's a guess). UPDATE: This was originally the site of the old Exchange National Bank that was ruined by a run in the 1920's. The First State Bank later bought the building, and then built this one in two stages. It is now the site of Wells Fargo.

I was given a dozen iris bulbs by a friend who told me they were mixed colors. I had no idea what was going to bloom; so far I have irridescent white and this one with purple edges. I can't tel about the others yet.

Although it's dated because this was taken almost two years ago and I've planted a whole new lawn and removed the trees on the left side of the house for some sunlight, I always loved the shots I got this particular evening. We hadn't been in the house more than maybe two months and I think the occasion was I had just replaced all the window stops in order to free the windows from their state of unopen-ness cos some moron painted them all shut. And I had started to clear some of the insane-ness of shrubbery from around the house (this shot was taken right after we moved in so maybe it's more clear what I mean by 'insane-ness of shrubbery').

Anyways, it was really cool to open the windows. I sort of can't wait for summer again and evenings like this. So much more to do on this place ... and someday I'll get a cool porch swing. After I have the house painted.
