M42, the Orion Nebula. It is an extremely popular target to photograph. This isn't a great one by any means, but I like it... it's the first time I've attempted to photograph a deep space object. I know I can do better in the future. I just need more equipment :). Riiiiight. And practice.

A Wright Gemini bodied Volvo B9TL new to First South Yorkshire in 2007.
In York city centre working a Chapelfields bound 1 service on 29 November 2014.
“A” Company of the Special Operations Regiment, together with Unit 302 of the Coalition’s Counter-Terrorism Division, was tasked with a village clearance operation aimed at disrupting insurgent networks and degrading their ability to launch coordinated attacks.
After 2nd Platoon established blocking positions around the village and set the conditions for the Ground Assault Force (GAF), 1st Platoon and Unit 302 launched the assault in the middle of the night. Unit 302 led the charge, clearing the first series of buildings.
Contact was made almost immediately as the assault teams advanced into the village, but the assault force quickly returned fire, clearing each structure methodically.

Day 2, our first Sunday on the island and the sun shines bright. We are confident enough to pick and mix from our bus map and our walking guide, so we make up our own itinerary: Bus no. 86 to Mdina, a walk round Mdina including coffee with a view from Fontanella Tea Gardens, then a stroll out of Rabat to Buskett Gardens (a popular Sunday picnic place), and on to Dingli cliffs. We started early so we were in time to get a late lunch at Bobbyland (another popular spot, Maltese people like to go out for Sunday lunch). After lunch, a postprandial stroll into Dingli and home in time for a pre-dinner read courtesy of buses 81 and 86.
The man on the plinth near the bus stop in Dingli is the novelist and playwright Francis Ebejer.

April 20, 2015 - Belogradchick Fortress or "Kaleto is one of the most preserved fortresses in Bulgaria. In the 1st – 3rd century, the Romans kept a fortress here to guard the strategic paths, which were crossing the area, using the advantage of the rock’s natural ability of hindering accessibility. Located on the north slopes of the Balkan Mountains, the fortress was used in ancient times, first by the Roman’s as part of their defensive blockade and subsequently by the Byzantine Empire. The fortress was extended by the Bulgarians. Its significance grew after the separation of Vidin’s Kingdom, including the territories of today’s North-West Bulgaria, parts of East Serbia and South-East Romania. The fortress, named Belgrad at that time, was one of the last fortresses to be taken over by the Turks at the end of the 14th century. They placed a garrison here, which played a key part in the defense of the country’s West areas and crushed the Bulgarians’ revolts. In the period since 1805 till 1837, the Kaleto Fortress was extended and reconstructed to allow the use of fire guns under the supervision of French and Italian engineers. The memorial plaques after the construction are written both in Bulgarian and Turkish – the unique case in the history of Turkish fortresses’ constructions. The extension included 3 courts (all of them with the capability of defending independently) located in a total area of 10 211 sq. meters, and one separate fortification. There are two main gates – Vidin Kapia and Nish Kapia. The fortification’s walls, which are 10 meters high, were added with gun embrasures. For the cannons, 3 bastions were built, each allowing the use of 15-16 cannons. In wartime, the number of the fortress’ defenders and the surrounding hills reached up to 3000 people. My cocker spaniel was at my feet waiting for cookie crumbs to fall the whole time I shot this image.
I tried a few different ideas with it and, as usual, came back to this shot for it's simplicity.

There was an ice sculpting event downtown yesterday. I could have made a collage of those images, but I always manage to find other random things to photograph, so here are some of the things I saw in my ramble through the downtown streets. The dolls were in a shop that does alterations and custom sewing; I assume the proprietor made their outfits. I loved the sign in a restaurant window, it says "First God made man, then he had a better idea."

Gemini 2s featured a lot more heavily here than in my late-2016 trip, with more having been transferred into Sheffield from other places. BJ11 EBG is actually quite an interesting one as it was a First London vehicle, later passing to Tower Transit along with all of First’s operation in the capital, before being sold onward to Mayfair Coaches. Then it came full circle by being absorbed back into the First empire and converted to single door for use in South Yorkshire!
A feature on some of the blue Sheffield liveries are these part-wraps where some local band or something is promoted down the sides of the vehicle. I have to say it does look kinda weird, although at the same time shows just how greatly First’s Sheffield identity leans into integrating itself with the city’s culture... almost to the level you’d expect of a municipal operator.
