This is currently the highest building downtown. It is located directly east of the Marion County Courthouse & Federal Courthouse. One block north of Ocala's Downtown Square.

In 1980, this building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

This former Marion Hotel building, today known as the Sovereign Building, was designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm of Peebles and Ferguson who designed a number of hotels throughout the south, including Hotel Lorraine and the Hotel Monticello in Norfolk, Virginia.

The hotel's builder was Day and Zimmerman, Inc. The costs of construction were completely financed by the sale of stock certificates to local citizens by the Community Hotel Corporation. Dr. James E. Chace, a former mayor of Ocala, and Horace L. Smith, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, led the effort to have a first-class hotel erected in the city to accommodate tourists and traveling salesmen. A decision was made to construct a 100 room fireproof hotel and supporting structures. A method of financing the hotel was developed and the Hotel Committee of the Chamber of Commerce formed a Citizens Sales Organization with 140 volunteers who sold stock in the Community Hotel Corporation. Funding for construction was raised in less than six weeks, for a total amount of $500,000, with most of the shares being purchased by local residents.

The design of the seven-story concrete and steel hotel included stucco walls, with decorative Spanish elements. A central tower rises above the top floor of the main block flanked by two-story wings. At the time of completion, an automobile garage for the use by guests, the Hotel Marion Garage, was also erected adjacent to the main structure.

The hotel opened with a gala celebration in early March of the year 1927 with 300 people in attendance. When the hotel first opened it was managed by Griner Corporation, of which movie actor Thomas Meighan and Governor John W. Martin served on the Board of Directors.

"I'm fireproof, you're not."

After a long wait for parts, I have finished my Hellboy. Some of you might remember the WIP photo I posted a few weeks ago. Well, my Arealight order came in today, so I could finally finish him.

His head is a Arealight tentacle head with the tentacles cut off and sanded down. Many people have done this, so I did it to. It's a little tall, but i'm fine with it. His face was entirely painted by me. His horns are also a slightly darker shade of red than the rest of him.

His torso is painted by me. He has a custom made gun holster and some 3D pockets on his belt. I also painted his "fathers" cross onto his leg.

The Right Hand of Doom is from an Iron Man Minimate and was then painted accordingly.

He also has a trench-coat made from a Lego Pirate Ship sail and a tail made from a Lego Monkeys tail.

What do you think? How does it look?

VENICE (WWSB) - Venice City Hall is set to get an upgrade! The architect for the redesign unveiled three scenarios in front of the Venice city council on Tuesday.

All three include a 4,800-square-foot, one-story addition to city hall that would connect it to a new two-story replacement for Fire Station 1, as well as the addition of angled street parking along Venice Avenue and Harbor Drive.

The city says these upgrades will help keep up with the area’s growth. The design process will take about a year, and construction is expected to start in the spring of 2020.

When Thomas Kay built his magnificent timber-framed town house in 1616, he retained this stone facade overlooking the churchyard from the previous medieval building that stood on the site. Perhaps because of the chimney stacks that were already there, but more likely simply for the fireproofing and strength of the stone against which to construct his own. Also are these curious small windows (there are three in all, one the other side of the famous porch). I can't find any information about them but I assume they are of the original building of the 1400's

About the mill,

Established as steam-powered woollen spinning mill in 1860s, single-storeyed weaving sheds added by 1887. Acquired in 1902 by Slaithwaite Spinning Company which had built three cotton-spinning mills in vicinity, and which in 1906-7 built large five-storeyed fireproof cotton-spinning mill on site, modelled on contemporary Lancashire designs. Low card room along one side; five-storeyed service block at one corner. Existing sheds enlarged and largely rebuilt for winding cotton.

Today's story and sketch by me, # 1243 Is about Slivia Doo, in one of her signature fireproof togas, she has somehow been tracked by "IGTA" Inter Galaxy Tax Assessor agents, Phil and Don Draper. Slivia arrived on Budahunga two months ago in a fiery crash into the side of one of the Humongous Volcanos that has become very active, Spewing really stinky clouds of smoke. Slivia has no idea how she got to Budahunga, she was on her way to the Playa Beautimus Resort at Lake Havasu Arizona. When she fell into a deep sleep after consuming about a dozen Sleepy Time Moon Pies. The next thing she remembers was being extracted from her crumpled spacecraft by Rescue Randy. Slivia and Randy have been dating since she was stitched back together at the Budahunga Center For Reconstructive Surgery. Slivia's Best Known for her exclusive Line of fire, acid, laser, and stain resistant Togas, how Phil and Don tracked her here, will have to be stories for another time, until then TaTa the Rod Blog.

The Rookery was built in 1887–1888 by the architectural partnership of Daniel H. Burnham and John Wellborn Root, known as Burnham and Root. In the architectural boom that followed the Great Chicago Fire, architects in what would become known as the Chicago School of commercial architecture competed with each other to create the world's first true skyscrapers. By mixing modern building techniques, such as metal framing, fireproofing, elevators and plate glass, together with traditional ones, such as brick facades and elaborate ornamentation, Burnham and Root sought to create a bold architectural statement. At the same time, they intended their buildings to be commercially successful.

The Wonder Bread Factory, 356 Fougeron Street, is an industrial bakery built from 1914 to 1915 and designed by architect and engineer Corry B. Comstock. The plant, closed in 2004, is associated with Ward & Ward Incorporated and the Continental Baking Company, maker of iconic American products Wonder Bread and Hostess Cakes. An icon of the Buffalo Belt Line, the Wonder Bread Factory is an excellent example of restrained classicism applied to early twentieth century fireproof factory architecture, embodying what architectural historian Betsy Hunter Bradley identified as an industrial ideal of "beauty based on function, utility, and process."

These exterior photos were submitted to Buffalo's Common Council in June 2018 as part of a local landmarking application.

The Carling, formerly known as the Carling Hotel and Hotel Roosevelt, is a historic building in Jacksonville, Florida, United States built in 1926. It is located at 31 West Adams Street in Downtown Jacksonville. As its former names indicates it was originally a hotel, and was used for that purpose until 1964; it currently serves as a residential building.

The 13-story building originally contained 335 rooms and was designed by noted New York City architects Thompson, Holmes & Converse in 1926 and held in Italian Renaissance style. A newspaper story depicted it as "300 rooms with bath, running ice water, fans and the latest equipment in the rooms. The three lower stories are faced with Indiana limestone above which is a shaft of red brick. The upper stories are trimmed with terra-cotta, and surmounted by a balustrade with limestone coping. The building is of completely fireproof construction." When it opened on September 1, 1926, it was one of Jacksonville's finest hotels.

Placement of the building was unusual at the time because it was situated in the middle of a block, rather than on a corner. It was constructed and managed by Atlanta's Dinkler Hotel Company, which owned and operated nearly two dozen upscale hotels in the southeastern United States. The facility was named after Carling L. Dinkler, who claimed to be the youngest hotel executive in the U.S.

The facility changed its name to the Hotel Roosevelt in 1936 and it was a downtown landmark for over a quarter century.[ A two-story addition was constructed in 1937 at the rear of the building which permits access from Monroe Street.

It was the site of the catastrophic Hotel Roosevelt fire in late December 1963, which claimed 22 lives and caused in excess of $350,000 in damage, forcing the hotel to close in 1964.

After being vacant for nearly 20 years, the structure was turned into apartments for retirees called Jacksonville Regency House, but that operation ended in 1989.

On February 28, 1991, the site was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, but the building remained shuttered for almost 14 years. Little or no work was performed on the building's major components for almost 40 years; the structure's infrastructure was outdated with leaks and rot throughout.

Jacksonville developer Vestcor began a historic preservation of the Carling in 2003 after obtaining a $16.5 million, 1.4% interest, 20-year loan and $5 million in grants, both from the city of Jacksonville. The company restored many architectural features which included Palladian windows, terrazzo floors, and the dual grand marble staircases leading from the lobby to what was the ballroom on the second level. Elevators, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and other infrastructure was modernized and a 237-space parking garage was constructed adjacent to the Carling. The ballroom was converted into a large community club room, a fitness center and a media room. Modern amenities were added while respecting the historic integrity of the structure.

The building was renamed The Carling, and its 100 apartments were opened in July 2005 after $29 million and 20 months of construction. Vestor began leasing space in the Carling's 15,000 sq ft (1,400 m2) commercial arcade in October 2007. Since then, a gallery known as "The Art Center Cooperative, Inc." and a barber shop opened in the complex.

In late December 2009, Vestcor requested a modification to their loan terms, citing three years of operating losses on the Carling and their other renovated building, 11 East Forsyth. The company asked for three years of interest-only payments plus low interest loans to potential tenants for the mostly empty commercial space in their buildings. Three months later, the city approved the plan for principal deferral but took no action on tenant loans.

Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida, and is the largest city by area in the contiguous United States as of 2020. It is the seat of Duval County, with which the city government consolidated in 1968. Consolidation gave Jacksonville its great size and placed most of its metropolitan population within the city limits. As of 2019, Jacksonville's population was estimated to be 911,507, making it the 12th most populous city in the U.S., the most populous city in the Southeast, and the most populous city in the South outside of the state of Texas. The Jacksonville metropolitan area has a population of 1,523,615 and is the fourth largest metropolitan area in Florida.

Jacksonville is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River in the First Coast region of northeast Florida, about 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line and 328 miles (528 km) north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities are along the adjacent Atlantic coast. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and in 1564 was the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. Under British rule, a settlement grew at the narrow point in the river where cattle crossed, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and the Cow Ford to the British. A platted town was established there in 1822, a year after the United States gained Florida from Spain; it was named after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh President of the United States.

Harbor improvements since the late 19th century have made Jacksonville a major military and civilian deep-water port. Its riverine location facilitates Naval Station Mayport, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the U.S. Marine Corps Blount Island Command, and the Port of Jacksonville, Florida's third largest seaport. Jacksonville's military bases and the nearby Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay form the third largest military presence in the United States. Significant factors in the local economy include services such as banking, insurance, healthcare and logistics. As with much of Florida, tourism is important to the Jacksonville area, particularly tourism related to golf. People from Jacksonville are sometimes called "Jacksonvillians" or "Jaxsons" (also spelled "Jaxons").

Palatka is a city in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,558 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Putnam County. Palatka is the principal city of the Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to 72,893 residents. The city is also home to St. Johns River State College, St. Johns River Water Management District Headquarters, and Ravine Gardens State Park. The area is well known for its local festivals, most notably the Florida Azalea Festival and the Blue Crab Festival.

By the 1880s, several competing railroads crossed the community, which became an important junction. These included the Florida Southern Railroad, the Jacksonville, Tampa, and Key West Railroad, St. Augustine and Palatka Railway, and the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad. On November 7, 1884, Palatka suffered a devastating fire. Guests arrived that season to find no accommodations, and so continued on the train south; this was the beginning of a gradual shift of tourism elsewhere. The city lost trade, shipping, and transportation preeminence to Jacksonville, on the coast. With its downtown rebuilt in brick to be fireproof, Palatka emerged a finer place.

In 1893, A. E. and H. S. Wilson of Saginaw, Michigan bought the Noah J. Tilghman & Son sawmill, which processed cypress lumber. Renamed the Wilson Cypress Company, it expanded operations and became a major employer. At its peak, it was the second largest cypress mill in the world, but closed in 1944. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895 destroyed Palatka's citrus groves for five years, which were formerly a major attraction. The ill-fated Cross Florida Barge Canal was once intended to pass the city. Today, tourism remains important.
