In 1720, Kura-zukuri shoka, or fireproof traditional merchant houses were built in the town of Edo with approval from the regimate.
The merchant houses of Kawagoe, (which traded quite heavily with Edo), followed this example building Kura-zukuri merchant houses.
The Osawa House, an important cultural asset, was built in 1792.
In 1893, the Great Kawagoe Conflagration occured and 1/3 of the city of Kawagoe(at the time) burned down.
The fire was the main reason for building most of the Kura-zukuri houses that exist today.
Unique Kura-zukurui houses still adorn the streets surrounding the Ichiban-gai.
Built 1882-1887 as a fireproof building for the U.S. Pension Bureau's headquarters by U.S. Army Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs, the exterior was styled from the Italian Palazzo della Cancelleri, and the interior took inspiration from Michaelangelo's Santa Maria degli Angeli Church in Rome. Since 1980 it has housed architectural displays of the non-profit National Building Museum. The museum has hosted Inaugural Balls since Grover Cleveland's in 1885.

Built in 1905, this Prairie-style building was designed by Argyle E. Robinson for the Empire Moving and Storage Company to serve as a fireproof warehouse. The building is clad in red brick with patterned brickwork, stone trim, small window openings, and an overall boxy form. The building is a contributing structure in the Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building today remains in use as a storage facility, now known as Hyde Park Self Storage.

I have passed this view quite a few times on my bike, and finally I decided to take a picture of it as I really like the view.
This is a lot which will probably be used for some boring office building. I believe it has been vacant for quite some time now.

Built in 1822-1827, this Greek Revival-style building was designed by Robert Mills and built by John G. Spidle to serve as a fire-resistant building to house the records department and archives of Charleston County. The building features a stucco-clad exterior with a raised basement, quoins at the corners of the basement, arched window bays at the corners of the first floor, arched windows at the central bays of the side facades of the second floor, a low-slope roof enclosed by a parapet flanking a central gabled roof, raised porticoes at the center of the north and south facades with doric columns, arcades with arches a the base, metal railings, and pediments, and metal-frame casement windows. The building is a contributing structure in the Charleston Historic District, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The building was heavily rehabilitated in 2016-2017, with the building systems being modernized, and presently houses the South Carolina Historical Society.
