Chiroptera - just a generic little ship, all in old gray. I think it looks kind of like a bat from certain angles, the vertical fins are like big bat ears or something. Chiroptera is the scientific name for bats.

This was the hardest flickr meet up ever - very challeging, in emotional way...
Well, this fighter started off as a redux of my Der Krieger Armored Starfighter, but now that I've finished it, it doesn't bear that much resemblance to it. Doesn't matter though, since I like this one better. This will be the fighter stored in my upcoming SHIP. Oh, and as for the asymetry on the guns, That will be fixed once I find another palm link piece. And as for the seemingly out of place tan dish on the right, it's a squad marking. The Viking pattern is what inspired me to name the ship the Wikinger in the first place.
Anyway, enjoy.

In recent years, Kotobukiya has teamed up with Yamashita Shunya, a prominent video game artist (and artist in general) who is best known for her work on Final Fantasy X, to produce Bishoujo statues for various properties, ranging from XMen to of course, Street Fighter.
Bishoujo art focuses on aspects of a character that give them that "young girl" look, which of course, usually means her curves. This is one of the artists strong points (hence the collaboration).
Yamashita Shunya also has a distinct style when it comes to the faces of her characters, particularly the expressiveness of the eyes. Look at enough of her stuff, and you can start to pick out her work everywhere you go.
I happened across this Sakura statue during my travels, and decided to adopt it into my collection, as I was curious as to how the Kotobukiya stuff held up when it come to statues. Keep in mind this statue was released in 2016, and was about the same price as that.. pretty flawed Lightning Static Arts Bust that I looked at before, with the statue having an MSRP of 400 yen higher. Other releases in the line include Chun Li, Cammy, Juri, and Decapri.
So lets pop it open and take a closer look at the statue.
The box contains the statue, naturally, as well as two plastic discs with either the Street Fighter logo or a section of the original illustration printed on it, with the intent of offering owners the option of what they wanted on their base. A nice touch, but I didn't opt for either was I didn't want to risk scratching the thing during installation.
Overall scale is approximately 1/7.
I have to say, that after the disaster that was the Static Arts Bust (again, they're roughly the same price), the end product here was much, much, much better. It's also quite nice on its own, even without being compared to the aforementioned. Assembly work is good, with no major seams or gaps to complain about. All the finishes are also quite well done - sanding was good as all surfaces appear to be smooth.
Sculpting of the body is nice, from the curves and limited musculature of the body to the pleats of her skirt and flowing headband, all of which adds to the dynamic appearance of Sakura being in mid Shouryuken. Even the work on the fingers/toes, which traditionally look terrible, have good definition and volume. Another area of weakness back in the day was where you hand parts of the body pressed up against one another (bent knee here), which is also well filled out.
However, as with most of the Yamashita statues from Kobokukiya, the sculptor always seems to get the face not quite right. For starters, the position is off to me, as she's starting more at the ground than the forward look she's got on the art. Also, the actual face itself seems to be more narrow and less cherubic as the source art would suggest. It doesn't kill the statue, but it does detract from the trademarks of the artist. There were also some steps taken to simplify her yellow neckerchief, making it stick up less and less detailed.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Kotobukiya statue if it didn't have something wrong with it. I see three issues, ranging from minor to major.
- Masking of the paint apps is a bit sloppier than I'd like to see, with application of some colours seemingly heavier than others.
- I think, as always, that Kotobukiya skimped on the flesh tone paint, perhaps relying on the underlying plastic colour to do the heavy lifting? It's not as bad as it once was, but it just seems a bit weak to me.
- her left eye has some serious paint issues.
Overall, not shabby at all, and I wouldn't hesitate to add the rest of the Street Fighter ones to the hoard is the opportunity to acquire them at a good price arises. It does make you wonder though, about how the QC could be so vastly different given the small price difference of 400 yen. Sure you could argue the bust is more detailed, but there's only half a body there. The best I can come up with is Kotobukiya has the FF license locked up and nobody can touch them, so why actually try.
