This intriguing observation from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a gravitationally lensed galaxy with the long-winded identification SGAS J143845+145407. Gravitational lensing has resulted in a mirror image of the galaxy near the center of this image, creating a captivating centerpiece. A third distorted image of the galaxy appears as a bridge between them.
Gravitational lensing occurs when the mass of an enormous celestial body – such as a galaxy cluster – curves spacetime and causes the path of light from distant objects to visibly bend around it, as if by a lens. Appropriately, the body causing the light to curve is called a gravitational lens, and the distorted background object is referred to as being "lensed.” Gravitational lensing can result in multiple images of the original galaxy, as seen in this image, or in the background object appearing as a distorted arc or even a ring. Another important consequence of this lensing distortion is magnification, allowing astronomers to observe objects that would otherwise be too far away or be too faint to see.
Hubble has a special flair for detecting lensed galaxies. The telescope's sensitivity and crystal-clear vision let it see faint and distant gravitational lenses that ground-based telescopes cannot detect because of the blurring effect of Earth's atmosphere. Hubble was the first telescope to resolve details within lensed images of galaxies and is capable of imaging both their shape and internal structure.
This particular lensed galaxy is from a set of Hubble observations that take advantage of gravitational lensing to peer inside galaxies in the early universe. The lensing reveals details that allow astronomers to better understand star formation in early galaxies, which gives scientists insight into how the overall evolution of galaxies unfolded.

While several other familiar geothermal features in West Thumb Geyser Basin were showing muted colors on this cool, overcast day, this small, unnamed pool displayed a variety of colors from the pale aquamarine crystal clear water in the deep pool to an assortment of bacteria, algae, and other "extremophile" life forms in its shallower, cooler runoff. This striking feature is in the "Venting Pools" area of the basin.

Alright, presenting this celebration's first wave of the Follower Feature! Man, there was so much talent out there this time around. After searching through hundreds of photostreams, I got it down to sixty brilliant MOCists out there... but unfortunately this time I'm just doing twenty. Plenty of room for them once I hit 500 though! :D As always, I'm trying to find the best of the best, those that know their parts and yet just didn't get the luck of the draw to instantly become famous. Hopefully we'll fix that.
At the head of the pack, we have chris.kruining! I don't know about you, but I found their Nuva revamps fascinating. They are clever new takes on classic characters with new color schemes and armoring. But if that isn't enough, be sure to check out their combiner/Kaita builds, including an Akamai revamp that is coming along wonderfully. Oh, and a snazzy Exo-Force spaceship.
For those of you in the Instagram Bionicle community, geoastrocat might be a familiar face to you. His every creation is photographed with such skill and character that they seem to jump right out at you. I for one really enjoy the unique and well-balanced color schemes he employs in many of his MOCs.
Though relatively new to the Flickr MOCing scene, MrEpicDragun is off to a great start with their Hau Maximus design. I mean, who doesn't love hulking skull monsters with double flaming mohawks? :P Their greebly, CCBS style reminds me much of MrBolttron.
Christmas is coming early (or is it late?) for rednas36. I've seen them around BZP, but never realized they had a Flickr account until they made me a stunning Christmas gift of Onuku receiving a Krana "for study." And what a Flickr gallery it was. Their bizarre assortment of monsters, Skakdi, and... is that a space marine?... has given me plenty of great creative fodder. I love how they use everything from System to masks to treads to achieve wonderful shaping.
westrichjenny is another new face to this community, but I really do like where they're going with that self-MOC. There's something almost... manga-like in the short and powerful proportions done with a strange assortment of parts.

Yellowstone is in the middle of a multi-year drought. It's possible that the drought is responsible for this hot spring being dry. The runoff channel looks as if it has held water not too long ago.
This is part of the Upper Group of the Heart Lake Geyser Basin.

A few weeks ago, I took this photo while taking an early evening walk around Vandusen Botanical Garden. Although I do not like cool temperatures, I do love the changing colours in the leaves during autumn. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Featuring BFMC Party Dress Barbie. I love this charming French Blue paper. Can you ever go wrong with gold cherubs? Not if you're me :). They're difficult to see but they're there. I've always loved this little gold & white writing desk/vanity. I had a completely different doll in mind for this vignette. But once I got it set, I glanced at Party Dress out of the corner of my eye, gave her a chance (finally! - I seriously deboxed her and threw her up on a display shelf and never really took time to appreciate her) and now I'm thinking she may have to reside here for a while.
(Photo disclaimer: The angle is wonky - it makes it look like she is taller than the top trim, but it is tricky photographing the top shelf of the unit, especially without a tripod. And, lighting in the Pacific NW this time of year is horrendous, making for a real challenge to shoot in natural lighting).
