While I am not a modeler, I do have an appreciation for older cars featuring “fallen flag” schemes and logos. With each passing year these cars get ever more rare as they are repainted or simply age out and are retired. While most are battered, faded, and covered in graffiti they are still a treat to see harkening back to an earlier era when the railroad scene was far less homogenous and much more diverse and interesting.
CNW 520062 is a 55 ft 10 in long Plate F boxcar built by the venerable but now closed Trenton Works in Nova Scotia in 1995. Part of a 100 unit order primarily for paper service they were among the very last freight cars delivered new to the Chicago and Northwestern Railway in 1995 only months before the erstwhile granger was absorbed by the expanding Union Pacific. But a quarter century later a few live on, still proudly dressed in the corporate colors and adorned with the famous ball and bar logo.
The big green and yellow car is entrained on CSXT M427 (Rigby Yard to Selkirk manifest) hustling west on CSXT's Boston Sub mainline, the former Boston and Albany Railroad, approaching the water plant crossing at about MP QB89.8.

Nazaré’s traditional fishing boats feature bright colors and crescent-shaped, upturned prows—a historic design dating back to the Phoenicians. Historically launched directly from the sand, these vessels are now preserved as open-air maritime museum exhibits along the Praia da Nazaré shoreline to celebrate the town's maritime heritage. Because the region lacks a natural harbor, these boats were designed to tackle the rolling Atlantic surf. Local fishermen famously used wedge systems and long, specialized oars tied to the boat's thole pins rather than traditional oarlocks to navigate the difficult shoreline.
*The Candaba Viaduct is a 5 km (3 mi). bridge passing over the Candaba Swamps in the North Luzon Expressway.The Candaba viaduct is raised over the Candaba swamp which keeps the highway open to traffic, even when the swamp gets flooded during the rainy season. It has a very nice view of Mt. Arayat, which is the lone mountain in Central Plain.

The galaxy featured in this image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has a shape unlike many of the galaxies familiar to Hubble. Its thousands of bright stars evoke a spiral galaxy, but it lacks the characteristic ‘winding’ structure. The shining red blossoms stand out as well, twisted by clouds of dust – these are the locations of intense star formation. The galaxy also radiates a diffuse glow, much like an elliptical galaxy and its core of older, redder stars. This galactic marvel is known to astronomers as NGC 1156.
NGC 1156 is located around 25 million light-years from Earth, in the constellation Aries. It has a variety of different features that are of interest to astronomers. A dwarf irregular galaxy, it’s also classified as isolated, meaning no other galaxies are nearby enough to influence its odd shape and continuing star formation. The extreme energy of freshly formed young stars gives color to the galaxy, against the red glow of ionized hydrogen gas, while its center is densely packed with older generations of stars.
Hubble has captured NGC 1156 before. This new image features data from a galactic gap-filling program simply titled “Every Known Nearby Galaxy.” Astronomers noticed that Hubble had observed only three quarters of the galaxies within just over 30 million light-years of Earth in sufficient detail to study the makeup of the stars within them. They proposed that in between larger projects, Hubble could take snapshots of the remaining quarter, including NGC 1156. Gap-filling programs like this ensure the best use of Hubble’s valuable observing time.

I was caught off guard here on a historic tour of London. Military planes started flying low and it hit me, it was Her Majesty’s birthday (it’s the only time this happens in London). They do this every year to mark her day as the Queen awaits on the world’s most famous balcony at Buckingham Palace. What you can see here are the Red Arrows, the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force. Their stunts are unrivalled the world over and are a true privilege to witness. Hope you all like the pic 😊

It’s true. If you decide to make the 60 mile off-road drive, be warned that there’s a good chance you’ll get a flat tire. In fact there’s a nice BIG sign, “Little’s”, right at the turnoff to the gravel road that offers to repair flat tires or tow your vehicle. The first 57mi seemed pretty easy and the last three, starting at the ranger station, was like driving over sidewalk curbs. I got my flat on the way out, around mile 30. I drove for a while but the digital gauge was telling me I was losing air fast. The gravel is made up of sharp rocks. I pulled over next to a car parked on the side – an older couple who also got a flat tire, but on their way in. We both drove four wheel drives with nice tires. After I got the spare tire on, I saw a flatbed tow truck driving in. Who else was in trouble? I didn’t get the incredible sunrise shot that I wanted. It was not quite the right time of year. It is a breathtaking spot nonetheless. Little’s in Kanab, UT did end up patching my tire for a reasonable price. Thank you again!
