Sandstone Hoodoo, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Colorado Plateau, Utah.

Before backpacking the Paria River Canyon with friends I spent four days exploring Vermilion Cliffs and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. While I had no firm agenda there were a couple of sites I wanted to visit including this one.
Research done prior to the trip provided GPS coordinates to the "parking area" for this hoodoo and a route description to find it. The description mentioned that it was at the end of a canyon but neglected to mentioned the cliffs I would need to scale to reach it. I was determined, however, to photograph this hoodoo so I picked the safest route I could find up the cliffs, camera and tripod in tow.
This hoodoo's days are numbered. Actually, erosion ensures all hoodoo's days are numbered but this one will probably fall sooner than most. This hoodoo was once attached to the sandstone at image center in a formation that is known as a "fin". Wind, water and time eroded the area between the two and left this freestanding structure. The hoodoo has a capstone which is made of a more durable rock which protects the more fragile sandstone below from the elements. But erosion still does its work over time and has nearly completed the demise of this one.
I visited this site three times while in this area and each time I returned I expected it to have fallen since my previous visit. It was still standing, however, when I last left it and hopefully it will be around for many decades for others to enjoy.

Took a quick trip to Arkansas for the past few days to see some fall color. They had record heat the last week so most of the leaves were drying up and past peak. The sun was bright, it was warm, and there was smoke or something in the air, but it was still beautiful. I had no idea there were view with endless color there. Wish I would have known about this years ago. This picture was taken on scenic route 7.

Who has not tried to take off, never fell. The most important thing in his goal - is the ability to stand up as it did not hurt, the ability to climb, breaking all the blood and soul and body. Either way, it is necessary to continue to live. If you do not stand, no one will lift your feet. Either way, you continue to breathe. We must continue to fight to the last heartbeat. I will not give. Never.

Wenn die Kastanien fallen
Der Herbst zieht sanft durch Flur und Tal
und doch auch stürmisch mit Regenfall.
Vor meinem Fenster der Kastanienbaum,
blühte noch gestern im Frühlingstraum.
Einst so geschmückt mit stolzen Blüten,
reckt sich empor ins farbige Glühen.
Die Früchte vor einem Wimpernschlag
noch verschlossen in grünen, stacheligen
Schalen-
liegen nun verstreut auf dem Erdenboden.
Pfützen spiegeln rote Welten,
Erst vorhin die Kinder lachend tobten.
Nobler Kastanienbaum,
was bleibst du regungslos und still?
Fast als ob die Lebenskraft will
sich leise lösen, sanft entgleiten.
Denn nichts Werdendes kann ew’ge Zeit bestreiten.
Der Herbstwind rauscht, der Abschied naht
und leis’ verlässt der Blätter Farb’
Einst schenkte die Krone der Liebenden kühlen Schatten,
doch wie ihre Begier begann des Baumes Pracht zu ermatten.
So stehe ich hier und blicke empor,
ein altes Sehnen flammt hervor.
Als wäre verblasst der Jugendglanz
und erlahmt die Beine im Freudentanz.
Wie du, nobler Kastanienbaum,
verwelkt der Menschheit letzter Traum.
Wir alle welken, senken Haupt,
doch mit der Vergänglichkeit kommt Bedeutung auch.

Yeah, when it comes down to it, I just like this shot too much to only post it as an outtake. This bridge is along the path that winds around the park (there are tonnnnnns of bridges) and I felt very private and alone here until the walker told me I was "doing it the hard way" and asked if I'd like him to take the picture for me. Ha.

Autumn is kicking off nicely in the Northeast Kingdom. Pockets of color here and there, but may not last long or peak if rain and high winds have their way.
Birds get the best views indeed.
Autumn... just as the other seasons simply beautifull. In my search for mushrooms, I got a bit disappointed. There where nearly none to find. This al happend cause of the hot and dry summer last year.

The leaves have all fallen, slight touch of colour in the low lying underbrush highlighted by the sun coming up. Stark contrast to a week ago when fall and all it's splendor was on display
