Our minds are so hard wired to see faces that we see them everywhere. In clouds, in leaves, on pieces of toast. The first thing that struck me about this picture of the Hedley Bull Centre on the campus at ANU, is that it looks like a face. Like an easter island head, or perhaps a Maori tiki. The rational modern me says, hey, they're just windows. But the program in my head, the one that enabled my ancestors to survive, says, mate, that's someone's face.
We all do this subconsciously. We constantly override our primitive instincts, our operating system kernel, in order to survive in a modern world. If we did not, would we worship this being as a god perhaps? Or treat it with fear and loathing and destroy it?
Evolution has not kept up with the pace of revolution of change in the societies that we build around ourselves. Our basic brains are struggling to keep up. I often wonder what of the myriad of new things our brains struggle with today will become hard-wired instincts in future generations. Or is the pace of change too fast for old fashioned evolution? Have we out-paced nature and are racing off helter-skelter into a future which lies beyond all the checks and balances which have helped us survive on the planet thus far?
I hope someone has read the manual...

The EU is facing a dramatically aggravated security environment in the East and South of its borders. At the same time, the financial crisis has led to drastic uncoordinated cuts in the defence budgets of the EU Member States. The EU's ability to project power into its neighbourhood is weak, most of its CSDP (Common Security and Defence Policy) operations are just too little, too late. While territorial defence of Western Europe continues to depend heavily on the US, several consecutive American administrations have been urging Europeans to take more responsibility for their own security within NATO.
The European Council has so far taken only small steps to encourage greater cooperation among Member States – clearly insufficient, if one looks at the alarming and deteriorating circumstances.
On the eve of the European Council on Defence of 25th June, ALDE will present its 'Roadmap towards an Integrated EU Military' to show the way how to achieve more European defence for less money, essentially by building an integrated European pillar of NATO.
The event will see a presentation of the roadmap by ALDE President Guy Verhofstadt, followed by keynote speeches by two ALDE Ministers of Defence and their former Finnish counterpart.

I've long had a fondness for this row. Chicago stone-front multifamily buildings of this era make me happy. If I were ever to move back up there, I'd love to live in a building like this near Humboldt or Garfield Park.
