Explosive Sunrise in Yellowstone

Splendid weather again today! Good for cycling down to Haren, just south of Groningen to visit the Hortus Haren.

By 1917 the University's original garden (1642) founded by the first professor of botany Henricus Munting (1583-1658) had become far too small for the explosive expansion of botanical studies in the nineteenth century. The University found a new location for botany in the large country estate De Wolff just north of the village of Haren which it acquired in 1917. By 1966 the move had been completed but the Garden's fortune was bleak. In 1985 botany was scratched from biological studies in Groningen as an independent course, and there was no longer need for a researching garden. So as those things go, the University got rid of it. Today the Hortus is in the hands of a private foundation. It remains a wonderful - and very large - place to visit.

Of course, visitors have to be drawn in. Many activities are hosted for that purpose, and there are also theme gardens. One of these is this pretty Chinese Garden.

"The Hidden Empire of Ming" is one of the largest Chinese gardens in Europe. It's worth a visit in any kind of season and kind of weather. Even in snow and rain the lines and colors or lack of them are fascinating. Of course, today everything was truly resplendent! Henricus and his son Abraham Munting would no doubt have been fascinated. They had a love not only for local plants with medicinal qualities, but were also 'stunned' by exotics...

The surf was really exciting to watch.

I worked in HM Customs & Excise for two years after leaving school. I found this old document in a drawer; plainly there was no further use for it so, with permission, I kept it.

An old document has been chosen as today's topic for the Our Daily Challenge group.

Normally, there is no longer any light burning at the dispensing point of the explosives warehouse!

60 years ago, the last miner left the former iron ore mine, and the light was turned on again for the camera.

In the morning at Coalcliff, Sydney, Australia.

Peace be with you.

The BvS10 Mk II is an all-terrain amphibious armoured vehicle designed and manufactured by BAE Systems Hägglunds. It is a highly versatile vehicle that can operate in extreme conditions, including snow, mud, and water. The BvS10 Mk II is an upgraded version of the original BvS10, with improved mobility, protection, and mission capabilities.

The vehicle is powered by a Caterpillar C9.3 ACERT engine, which provides 296 kW of power and 1,700 Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 70 km/h on land and 7 km/h in water. The BvS10 Mk II can carry up to 17 personnel, including a crew of two.

The vehicle's armour provides protection against small arms fire, shrapnel, and mines. It also has a blast-resistant hull and a V-shaped underbelly to deflect explosive blasts. The BvS10 Mk II is equipped with a range of advanced systems, including a battlefield management system, GPS, and a thermal imaging camera.

The BvS10 Mk II is used by several countries, including the UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands. It has been deployed in a variety of missions, including peacekeeping, disaster relief, and combat operations. Its amphibious capabilities make it particularly useful in coastal and riverine environments.

Repurposed dynamite cases used for building materials in this old 1940's home.

This is the river that runs through Kennel Vale in Cornwall. It is 'explosive' because it used to mined for the salt peter for dynamite manufacture! Now it remains a peculiar mix of natural beauty and raw human intervention.

I went a week ago and promised a return trip. This time I tried a bit harder to get a decent exposure but it is a really tricky place to shoot in. There is so much contrast everywhere. The remains of old waterwheels and walls can just be seen in the background. A really magical and slightly spooky place.

Explosive sky over River Tay at Newburgh

A massive explosion takes place at the base of the plume where molten lava is pumping into the ocean on the Island of Hawaii.

The plume is comprised of steam, sulfur dioxide, glass particles, ash, rock, and black sand. As the molten lava pours out of the lava tubes that carried it from magma chambers under the flanks of Mauna Loa volcano above, it instantly explodes into black sand and rock fragments. Many of these molten chunks will continue floating and steaming on the ocean. This is the most ocean entry lava that has been seen here in local memory.

These photos can be found in high resolution for prints and digital downloads here

Later that night the full moon eerily lit this whole plume from the side and I took some photos of that shown here ,or you might see them on the news before that.

Thank you for visiting and commenting, I appreciate that a lot,

Sparks

This was a very short lived explosive prominence I caught at 13:17 GMT/UTC (14:17 BST) 21.04.2015. A magnetic filament rose up on the sun's eastern limb, creating a magnificent prominence.
