Common Loon with a territorial display in response to a lone loon nearby.

Looking N/NW Owens Valley California, Goodale Creek Campground. Don't know what the blue object is to the right. UFO?

This is my summer garden flower of choice this year, Alstroemeria Inticancha Sunset. Its natural habitat is the cool mountain regions of Chile, Brazil and Peru. For this reason it has been dubbed, 'Flower of the Incas'. The species was first introduced to Europe in the C18th by a Swedish botanist, who discovered it.

Its beautiful creamy yellow blooms with dark frecks and a splash of rasberry at centre of each petal, are to my mind a little explosive. This year I have bought a couple of varieties, for they have certainly caught my eye. And they do not disappoint; they continue to flower well into the autumn.

Have a good weekend. With the prospect of the women's world cup final on Sunday, it promises to be a good one!

This was just 10 miles from me, in the Hill Country...they were popping up all day and were awesome looking!

A popcorn kernel's strong hull contains the seed's hard, starchy shell endosperm with 14–20% moisture, which turns to steam as the kernel is heated. Pressure from the steam continues to build until the hull literally explodes, allowing the kernel to forcefully expand, to 20 to 50 times its original size, and then cool leaving behind a yummy treat.

Popcorn is often considered a grain but it is also considered a fruit.

A particularly rocky stretch of the coast. between South Shields and Whitburn and some of it not that easy to reach. You also have to be particularly careful not to misjudge the tides or you can easily find yourself being cut off!

The arched feature in the distance reminds me so much of Marsden Rock, a little further north along the coast. It was much larger and famous for its bird colonies. It too had an arch, just like the rock in this photograph, but it partially collapsed, Then, for fears of safety, the remaining unstable section of the arch was brought down by explosives.

I am re-inspired and couldn't be more animated for what the future entails for me.

A day where I didn't expect much turned into a surprise photogenic storm. You can see the updraft growing in front of your eyes with the rest of the storm reaching towards the tropopause. It did have a brief wall cloud form.

Went to check up on this spot. Last week, there were only bare branches here.

Cirrus radiatus is a variety of cirrus cloud. The name cirrus radiatus is derived from Latin, meaning "rayed, striped".This variety of cirrus clouds occurs in parallel bands that often cover the entire sky and appear to converge at a single point or two opposite points on the horizon. Cirrus radiatus is often partly made up of cirrocumulus or cirrostratus.

Now can you imagine parents letting their little kids run around and play? I tell ya, I had to leave this area because I could not stand to watch kids playing around. Do people not understand this is powerful, powerful unrestrained mountain creeks??? I greatly respect or even call it fear water like this! I know this one thing...if you fell in...your dead! Yikes! This water is so loud you can't hear yourself think!! lol Been snowing here a little...I'm being a couch potato today..real gray and yucky! :P

On a cloudy afternoon in July 1968, Sulzer Type 2 D5078 heads away south from Harlech with its freight train. Behind the gunpowder vans loaded at Cookes Explosives Ltd, Penrhyndeudraeth, are empty coal wagons, probably from Portmadoc.

I am gonna miss these storm clouds. With the first "cold" front having just moved through all we get now is clear blue skies. Picture perfect days as they say.

High Explosive Squash Head, HESH projectiles deform when they hit the target: The nose flattens against the wall of the target, and then the explosives detonate. The explosion causes material from the inside of the target to be blown off, creating lethal fragments within the target. At least, that is what it appears to be , if anyone can provide a better or more accurate description then please do so.

I found this shell whilst walking around the WW2 V1 bomb crater on Howden Moor in the Peak District. I trod on it and feeling its hardness under my sole I looked down and assumed it was part of the V1 casing , only minutes before Ian had found a part of the V1 casing. On picking it up my heart leaped a little and I put it down again PDQ.

I returned to it a little later to photograph it ! I was disinclined to adjust its position to allow for a better shot.

This is from the 1960,s from a time when the moor was used for practise exercises

by the army.

I found the info and the picture below on this web site ....although why anyone would want to collect such things is beyond me :-)

High Based T-Storms developed rapidly but failed to drop much rainfall. My GoPro wide field time lapse captured the initial minutes as the cumulus cloud encountered an upper level trough, sending instability to the severe radar level of dBZ=66.

At the end of the clip, mammatus clouds formed.

XXL touch me!

Until yesterday, I had forgotten how much I love being out on the ocean. On our way to Santa Cruz Island, we came across a huge pod of Common Dolphins that must have been several hundred strong!
