recently i have been enchanted with the raw. the unpleasant or imperfect. pre-grooming. textures. lets skip photoshop for a second.
In the first picture you can see a birdbath. This is where I planted a small area of poppies in memory of Hyacinths cat Poppy. This year there has been a POPPY EXPLOSION!! They are everywhere and seem to multiply daily. ;-) I'm showing four different areas of my backyard. The last picture shows a plant coming up through the deck! ;-) Max is also in the deck picture!
An early start before dawn in July really is an early start but it was worth it to get this lavender shot. The bush reminded me of a firework and the colour was awesome.

They demolished two high rise blocks in a massive controlled explosion today in Glasgow. I haven't seen such a thing before and it is difficult for photographs to convey the awesome power of the moment the charges explode.
It was quite a thing to see.

Police have arrested a man following an explosion at a house in Blackley.
Shortly after 12.25pm on Monday 16 January 2017, officers were called to reports of an explosion at an address on Cecil Road.
Serious damage was caused to two properties, with some minor damage to surrounding premises.
Residents of surrounding homes were evacuated for a short time.
Following the incident, two men remain in hospital. One is in a critical condition and the other is in a stable condition.
One of whom, a 33-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing an explosion to endanger life. He is the man in a stable condition.
The scene is still being investigated and enquiries are ongoing.
Detective Inspector Dave Sinclair, of GMP’s City of Manchester Team, said: “This was a devastating incident which has left two people in hospital with serious injuries and destroyed part of a terraced street.
“Good progress is being made as we continue to investigate the cause of the explosion, but we still need to hear from anyone who believes they have any information about what happened.
“The house is now being treated as a crime scene. Given the problematic working conditions, it may be several days before we will be able to return the street to normality.
“I would like to thank the community for their continued co-operation as police, the local authority and other emergency services remain at the scene to carry on with the investigation.
“My officers will be on hand in the local area and will be updating members of the public with information as we progress this investigation.
“If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to approach and speak to my officers at the scene or contact the local neighbourhood officers.”

October 23, 2010, the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) removed two exhaust stacks from the Site’s P & R reactors. With less than 40 pounds of dynamite and in a matter of seconds, the two 145-foot tall, 700-ton stacks that have towered over the P and R Reactors for more than 50 years came down. The demolition is part of an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project that is decommissioning the two Cold War era reactors.
This $185 million Recovery Act demolition project is part of in situ, or in-place, decommissioning of the two reactors, a Recovery Act Program managed by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), the SRS management and operations contractor. The project employed 108 people to complete the stack demolition. The rubble from the stacks will be placed below grade and grouted in place at each of the reactors.
In preparation for the demolition, SRNS modified the base of each stack to create “columns” into which they will drill 80 15-inch-deep horizontal holes for explosive loading. The explosive charge was initiated by nonelectric detonators ranging in time from 25-200 milliseconds to assist in controlling the rate and direction of the fall of each stack. Seismographs where used in the immediate area to monitor the vibration and air blast generated by the demolition. The P Reactor stack fell first, followed by the R Reactor stack. The demolitions were performed by Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), the contractor that also felled the 52-million-pound, 450-foot-high and 345-foot-wide K Cooling Tower in May.
In the ongoing phase of in situ decommissioning, the reactors’ underground structures will be filled with an estimated 260,000 cubic yards of concrete grout. This will seal the structures and leave them safely intact for an estimated 1,400 years. The reactor buildings themselves will have little or no maintenance performed on them in the future.
While the reactors were operational, the P and R reactor stacks were used as the outlet for the exhaust from the reactor buildings. R Reactor was shut down in 1964, and P Reactor was shut down in 1988. If left in place, the height and configuration of the reactors’ exhaust stacks could pose serious risk due to degradation and possible collapse in the future. Removing them mitigates that risk.

Well I finally went back to try explosions again now that my system is more dialed in. the net result is that the system has better resolution but isn't as colorful. I am using the CameraAxe and as I kind of suspected, it isn't fast enough to really catch the first stages of the explosion. Microprocessors have their clock speed to deal with.
The set-up is much more usable though. I bought a sound sensor from Adafruit industries that works really well with the CameraAxe. Setting the trigger level with this set-up is wonderful easy.
Now I have to try and figure out a simple analog solution to get earlier in the event. I's like to make at least a few pictures of interacting shock waves.
This picture used a linear cut-off that has 1D sensitivity. Also check out the repeatability between the two events. Better than it should be.
I'm also using a sacrificial glass to protect the (already damaged by me) mirror.

Just for comparison I filmed a small piece of the explosive that I am using to generate shock waves. Deflagration is defined as a combustion that progresses slower than the speed of sound. An explosion happens at a speed greater than sound.
As yo can see from this video the explosion is over at a much faster rate than the previous videos. With a shutter speed of 1/2000 I had no chance of catching the shock wave that I normally capture. To catch the shock wave I have to use my special flash which is 500 times faster.

My 1st BACON EXPLOSION. It wasn't as pretty as the ones I saw here, 67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=325570
Nevertheless it still tasted pretty good. I got a little carried away with my sausage. I used 3 lbs when I should have stayed with 2 lbs. I learned from my mistakes and so if there is a next time I will know what to improve on. I used three cheese, year old cheddar, extra sharp cheddar, and smoked Gouda. I cooked up 4 slices of bacon and broke it up and along with the cheese rolled it up in the sausage.
I used mild and hot sausage. I seasoned the sausage with some cilantro, Sweet Mesquite seasoning a little cinnamon and some Kentucky Bourbon. I sprinkled some brown sugar & smoked paprika and a little home made barbq sauce on the bacon before I put the sausage on top of it. After I rolled her all up, I slathered it all over with my homemade bourbon and molasses BarBQ sauce. Then I smoked it a little more than 4 hours. Now I didn't say she would be pretty, but she sure was good. I will work on making her pretty next time, lol.
