'Bubbles' by John Everett Millais is an iconic piece of fine art that was acquired by Pears and exploited for advertising their brand. The boy appeared in the 1892 pastiche of their adverts on the rear cover of the annual and in many black & white newspaper & magazine adverts too.

Here is a second vintage jigsaw which has an interesting mixture of a semi-interlocking background and push-fit, line-cut main subject. Pears Vintage 250pc Bubbles or A Child's World by Millais. Sold by a Canadian BCD member c April 2013.

In another photo I show John H's jigsaw and three colour formats of Bubbles used in the 1880s and early 1900s:

Pears John H jp2104 Vintage 220pc Bubbles John E Millais 1897 Plate. Divided corners, non-interlocking edge & allover cut with some rounded knobs.

- 1897 Pears Annual Presentation Plate, 28x19in. The original was one of two plates in this annual along with Cherry Ripe by Millais. (The 1s 1897 annual was marked as sold out in 1916 & 1917 adverts offering back numbers & prints). In 1916 the large Bubbles print could be obtained for 6d + postage; in 1917 they were 1s, and smaller Bubbles prints 9.8x7.8in were now also offered for 2d each or 9s (106d) per 100, post free.

- 1907 Pears Annual Front Cover.

- Small post-card - 'For your scrapbook' - insert in 1894 annual.

- (not shown) In 1916 & 1917 adverts in Pears Annuals Bubbles postcards with a blank reverse were offered at 12 for 2d or 1s 6d/gross (18d per 144), post free.

The Washington Mines was a broadside in the form of a full-size newspaper created in April 2000 by activists protesting the World Bank’s financing of the exploitation of natural resources in the Third World for the benefit of corporations and at the expense of the general population in Third World countries.

Volume 2, Number A16 on the broadside was a reference to this being the second mass globalization protest following the “Battle in Seattle” in 1999 against the World Trade Organization—the second protest occurring in Washington, D.C. on April 16, 2000.

Somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 people participated in the protests.

Washington, D.C. police unlawfully suppressed the demonstrations through an illegal raid on the demonstration headquarters at the Foundry United Methodist Church at 1328 Florida Avenue on April 15th and through mass arrests April 15-17.

On April 15th the Washington D.C. Police preemptively raided (without a search warrant) the Convergence Center, citing fire safety. This police action was cited as an 'unconstitutional raid' during the subsequent class action lawsuit.

The day before the larger protest scheduled on April 16, a smaller group of protesters demonstrated against the Prison-Industrial Complex in the District of Columbia. Mass arrests were conducted and 678 people were arrested, including bystanders, journalists and tourists when the police did a sweep of the block.

The majority of the arrests on April 15 occurred at 20th Street NW between I and K streets.[12] Three-time Pulitzer Prize winning, Washington Post photographer Carol Guzy was detained by police and arrested on April 15, and two journalists for the Associated Press also reported being struck by police with batons.

On April 16th and 17th, the demonstrations and street actions around the IMF that followed, the number of those arrested grew to 1,300 people.

In June 2010, the class-action lawsuit for the April 15th events called Becker, et al. v. District of Columbia, et al were settled, with $13.7 million damages awarded.

--description of events partially excerpted from Wikipedia

The tactic of using illegal raids and mass arrests replicated the Washington, D.C. police tactics at the 1971 Mayday protests. Authorities knowingly illegally suspend civil liberties, breaking up the protests in the process, and willingly settle lawsuits later.

Oldish pics from my garden..

First ripened rosso rosso tomatoes, from a while back.

We’re big soup fans — and baked potatoes — and this is a favorite my sister and I experimented and came up with one winter:

Ingredients:

approximately 1/2 box of instant mashed potatoes (Idahoan brand recommended)

1/4 cup heavy whipping cream (or milk)

1/4 cup sour cream

6 green onions (chopped)

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

8 strips of bacon (cooked and crumbled)

1 packet of loaded backed potato seasoning or salad topping

salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Fill a Dutch oven about 1/3 way full with water and bring to a boil. Add instant potatoes until it reaches a soupy consistency — you do not want them thick. Lower heat and stir in heavy whipping cream, sour cream, cheese, crumbled bacon, chopped onions and seasonings.

Top with additional cheddar cheese and green onions to serve

Note that the sole light (apart from the moon) is one lone oil lamp on the other side of the harbour. Fabulous star-gazing!

unless this company has a permanent retirement community for these animals, it's still murder. and unless these animals are producing for themselves, by themselves, it's still exploitation.

From Flint, Michigan to the exploitation of indigenous groups and the plight of the displaced, environmental crises can detract from people’s fundamental human rights – including the right to health, livelihood, and security.

How can environmental and human rights organizations better work together to the benefit of all? Rights-based climate change and conservation strategies challenge organizations to determine just who is benefiting, whose voices are being left behind, and how to close the gaps. Creating such strategies will involve closer community and stakeholder engagement to give voice to the marginalized.

Join the Wilson Center on June 22 for a conversation with thought leaders from the environmental community, the public sector, and government on climate change and conservation efforts’ direct and indirect impacts on a wide range of human rights.
