Fiona happy to see our food after a long wait!
Jaslyn wanted Thai for her birthday, as so we went to Poppy Thai.
The Thai food was quite good, very rich, creamy, and full of coconut. The spices were a bit toned down though, which is probably why I think Ying Thai 2, in Lygon Street, Carlton is still my favourite Thai place in Melbourne.
The serves of the main dishes were quite decent too, but the tom yum soup was a bit steep at AUD7.90 for a small bowl.
Raymond also picked up a Black Forest cake from Cake World for dessert.
This was followed by a bit of Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix to work off the dinner and cake!

Three Indian curry places have just opened at the top of Bourke Street, with more to come!
I tried Green Pepper and Jaipur and the verdict seems to be that the spices have been toned down. I like my curries full of spices, but not necessarily full of chillies.
What was surprising was that, despite the mild spice, a large proportion of the clientele were Indian, and presumably including Pakistanis and Sri Lankans. Maybe it is authentic, and the spicy-storm is only typical of Malaysian Indian food.

Blue Eye and Mussels with a Boulliabaise-style Sauce - Lake House Restaurant, Daylesford AUD39
I am a big fan of boulliabaise, and after what Julia and I had in Nice (ok, it wasn't Marseilles), not many so-called boulliabaises could compare. This sauce did. It was rich with the flavours of the sea but the fennel shone through. A very nice balance. A thick juicy slice of braised fennel added to the aniseed accent.
The blue-eye was superbly cooked, slightly rare in the middle, so that the fish didn't flake, but almost fell apart in your mouth! Julia doesn't usually like half-cooked fish, but this was no ordinary half-cooked fish!
The mussels, while sweet, plump, and juicy, didn't stand a chance against the sauce! :)
It was just as well potatoes were included to help mop up some of the sauce. I did the rest with bread :P

Amye, Isabel, Shanny, Boon Chew, Julia and Alpha - Lunch at Cafe Vue.
I think they changed their burger. The brioche bun was soft, and so was the burger patty. Isabel thinks that it used to be a Wagyu beef burger, but I recall it as just a good beefy burger. I think the beef burger at Grill'd is better.
ok, for the record, here's a photo of the Cafe Vue burger in December 2006. I did say that the brioche bun was too soft back then too :P
and no, it wasn't Wagyu...

Beef Ravioli in Tomato and Vegetable Soup - Postal Hall
Yum! The soup was a bit sour though.
They used the end of the crusty loaves used to make sandwiches. I love crusty end bits! :)
Curry Goat - Babble On Babylon AUD16 large, AUD12 (i think) for a small serve.
The curry goat wasn't as fiery or as spicy as our previous visit, but it was still pretty good! The rice and peas (kidney beans, really), were still good for mopping up the curry.

端午节晚餐 Duan Wu Jie Dinner. Mum made lots of 粽子 rice dumplings, including Hokkien-style with pork, mushrooms and black-eye beans and spicy Nyonya-style with minced pork.
Mum also made 莲藕汤 soup with lotus root and stir fried kailan 芥兰炒鱼片.
Omega bought 炸子鸡 Crispy Skin Chicken from Ocean King.

I burnt the bottom of the pan... but the soccarat was still pretty good :)

Prettier and tastier than my previous effort of paella with chorizo and roast chicken :)
Not as nice as the Paella at Colmao Flamenco though!
It's a pity I used shelled-prawns out of laziness. Fresh, whole prawns have much better texture and flavour! But overall, the fresh seafood from Happy Tuna, is pretty good. They make their own mixed seafood from fish and squid offcuts and small mussels and shrimp.
I did make it with authentic calasparra rice!

Julia and I were amused that they used dried whole longans in the soup, presumably to add some sweetness! After cooking, we peeled a few to eat the sweet flesh inside! :)

Roasted Barramundi fillet, fennel and crustacean cake, crisp pancetta, with a verjuice reduction.
A succulent piece of fresh Barramundi with a crispy skin. The fish was so juicy, you might have thought it was steamed or poached. The tomatos in the verjuice reduction provided a nice tang to the sweet flesh of the fish.

Creamy native pepper chevre goat's cheese with 100% rye bread, both from Milawa Cheese.
Yummy with a salad of mixed leaves, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, with a bit of orange zest for some, err... zest!

薄饼 Popiah!
Filled with stewed shredded 沙葛 yam bean, carrots and French beans, Chinese lettuce, some fried tofu, shredded egg omelete, 豆芽 bean sprouts, minced pork, fried shallots and a drizzle of Hoisin and chilli sauces!
I think I had at least 3 of these! :)

Shredded Pickle Salad
On a base of shredded Chinese cabbage, cucumber and carrot, I added preserved kale (hum choi / xian cai / 咸菜), candied orange peel, roasted rice and Kaffir lime leaves.
A rather refreshing salad with nods to Thai-style salads.

Good healthy Avocado Foccacia at the Prince Alfred Hotel, Richmond. The creamy avocado and juicy tomatoes added a nice moistness, and the basil and Grana Padano cheese gave it a real flavour boost.
