Egg Net Salad insides - Ghin Khao AUD15.90

The Egg Net Salad was wrapped in an Egg Net omelette, which was rather tough, and unremarkable.

TheEgg Net Salad insides was very good, packed with torn mint leaves and finely sliced lemongrass for a bright fresh flavour. Other ingredients I could spot were beansprouts, sliced cucumber, spring onion, coriander and crushed peanuts.

According to the menu, the dressing was tamarind and coconut cream, and it was a good balance of rich, sweet and tart, but I think less dressing would have been nice.

Interesting ham, cheese and tomato sandwich from Romanza, that I toasted. Good effort for having chutney, but it was a bit too sweet.

As usual, the desserts are very pleasing to the eye but lacking in punch.

The marscapone in the tiramisu was whipped to make it light and fluffy and less rich, definitely a good thing! Although we would have preferred more coffee liqueur!

The maraschino cherries were a bit of an alcoholic treat, but wasn't really necessary. As was the vanilla ice-cream.

111 Spring Street

For anyone who's ever tried to walk up and make photos of this building you know what I mean.

The security id a little over-zealous.

BTW: This is a photomerge/photoshop mash-up of about six different photos. If you look at the larger sizes, the edits should be glaring. However, I am pleased with the result because I was most interested in the reflection on the building's surface.

---

A very Thai place. A lot of their customers spoke Thai. Unfortunately, we found the food too sweet (sugary).

We then took a walk along Mordialloc Pier. A cool change from the hot and sticky days we've just had.

Lots of food as usual!

- Aunt Lee Geok's Steamed Golden Promfet 蒸兜底鲳鱼

- Aunt Lee Geok's Stir fried Scallops with seasonal vegies 带子 炒 时菜

- Ning's Brocolli, Chinese Cabbage and Snow Peas with Braised Shitake Mushrooms 香菇 扒 西兰菜 白菜 雪豆

- Alpha's Spinach with Bamboo Pith and Dried Scallops 干贝,竹笙 扒 菠菜

- Mum's Dang Shen, Bei qi, Goji / Wolfberry soup with Aunt Lee Geok's organic pork bones 党参北芪,枸杞子 草猪 汤

Antipasto, Tiamo 2.

Today's antipasto was decidely vegetarian! I forgot to ask for the whitebait and the boconccini.

Jaslyn wanted Thai for her birthday, as so we went to Poppy Thai.

The Thai food was quite good, very rich, creamy, and full of coconut. The spices were a bit toned down though, which is probably why I think Ying Thai 2, in Lygon Street, Carlton is still my favourite Thai place in Melbourne.

The serves of the main dishes were quite decent too, but the tom yum soup was a bit steep at AUD7.90 for a small bowl.

Raymond also picked up a Black Forest cake from Cake World for dessert.

This was followed by a bit of Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix to work off the dinner and cake!

Summer Lunchbox - Cafe Vue AUD15

We got to try a bit of Amye's duck pate, and it was light and divine! Very good for dipping your fries into :P

I think the Summer Lunchbox December 2006 was better value.

Starter: Duck pate with cranberry jelly and brioche bun

Salad: Waldorf salad

Savoury: Ham and gruyere cheese vol au vent

Sweet: Spiced fruit cake dipped in rum and white chocolate

Amye, Isabel, Shanny, Boon Chew, Julia and Alpha - Lunch at Cafe Vue.

I think they changed their burger. The brioche bun was soft, and so was the burger patty. Isabel thinks that it used to be a Wagyu beef burger, but I recall it as just a good beefy burger. I think the beef burger at Grill'd is better.

ok, for the record, here's a photo of the Cafe Vue burger in December 2006. I did say that the brioche bun was too soft back then too :P

and no, it wasn't Wagyu...

- Crunchy Pickled Cucumbers

- Delicate Chicken Fillets with a bean paste sauce

- Five-spice beef encased in batter

The pasti was a mild hard cheese, a bit like just ripe parmesan.

We went to Waterfront City in the Docklands for the Portuguese Festival, but it was already packed and the queues for food were very long. So we decided to have a quiet lunch at the Wine and Cheese Providore, before heading back to catch some performances.

A taste of Portugal Festival at Docklands!

Sunday 10 June 2007, 12pm to 7pm.

Waterfront City Piazza

Docklands Drive

DOCKLANDS VIC 3008

Melway: 2E D4

The Portuguese community in Melbourne is out to prove there is more to Portugal than flame grilled chicken! And what better way to do so than a festival promoting the country and culture behind Portugal. The festival will feature traditional Portuguese folk dancing and music, as well as music and dance from East Timor and Brazil. The Festival will also feature arts and crafts displays and various activities for children attending the event. Traditional Portuguese food will be available to enjoy as well as popular Portuguese wines, beer and soft drinks. The festival is organised by the CLP (Portuguese speaking communities), a non-profit organisation. The CLP aims to promote the Portuguese Speaking Communities social and cultural integration within the Australian community. The festival allows the Portuguese Speaking Communities to come together and teach the wider community all aspects of their food, history and culture.

Roast Tomato Bruschetta, topped with pesto and fetta chese at Liquid, New Quay Docklands.

It was so hot, that we had to hide in an air-conditioned restaurant instead of sampling the food at the Tastes of the Sea food festival.

Warm Pasta Salad with Smoked Tuna and Caramelised Fennel, with grilled corn kernels and for crunch, carrots and fennel tops. Not bad at all, if I do say so myself.

Caramelising the fennel mellows the taste, like baking, but still leaves some of the warm aniseed flavour.

Very pretty takoyaki and very good, but it can't compare to the freshly made takoyaki in Osaka!

The good news is that they sells packs of 5 for $5 that you can finish cooking at home.

Naked Weapon DVD AUD15

She doesn't look anything like Leslie Nielson! :P

Another lazy dinner, this time with Baked Mushrooms, Parsnip Puree and Steamed Cabbage, and chestnut and parsnip soup.

I made this with frozen chestnuts form China, which weren't as fragrant as if I used freshly peeled ones. One has to cheat sometimes. Some recipies include parsnips in the chestnut soup and I did. I think it gave it a smoother texture, and helped smooth out the grittiness of the chestnuts. I also flavoured it with rosemary and a bayleaf, which help mask that "green" parsnip taste, leaving a warm rich chestnut flavour.

Frozen foods dinner, with rather gamey Chicken Strips, tasteless Fish Fillets stuffed with Spinach and Fetta, frozen beans, frozen carrots and frozen chips. The tomato sauce and mustard came in very handy!

Sounds ok, but not very good at all. It reminds me of the school canteen food in Jamie Oliver's School Dinners!
