Tens of thousands died at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Some died from disease, starvation, and exposure, but many were slaughtered by the Nazis between the late 1930s and 1945.
The execution trench seen here was where prisoners were led to then be shot or exterminated in the "ovens" en masse.

In the original 15th. century plans it was intended for the cathedral to have a Gothic spire, however such was the flamboyance of the design, note the profusion of smaller highly decorated towers in the lower part, that funding ran out before this could be achieved and the diocese had to settle for a copper dome, which does seem a little out of place. There is probably a moral in there somewhere.
The cathedral has had the misfortune to be situated in a part of France with a particularly turbulent history; there was the 14th. century hundred years war against the English, the 16th. century wars of religion which saw the city occupied by protestant and then catholic armies, the Frond rebellion in the 17th. century, the French Revolution in the 18th. which saw worship transferred to a 'Supreme Being' and the execution of its bishop. All these events exacted their toll on the structure of the building which necessitated repeated and often extensive repairs and sometimes unsuccessful reconstruction, In rebuilding the nave the architect had to settle for a considerable reduction in the roof height compared to the original structure with the result that the original flying buttresses, still standing, are left supporting nothing in mid-air. But perhaps the final indignity was the loss of formal cathedral status by Napoleon's decision to transfer the departmental capital from Saintes to La Rochelle.
Registan (a sandy place): this public square was the centre of Samarkand and the site of a large market. It came to be used as the place where royal proclamations were made, public executions held, and trade & commerce conducted. In the 15th and 17th centuries, madrasas were built on three sides of the square. This design, madrasas facing each other across a square or street, is called a kosh, a "double, pair", as the building of madrasas are opposite each other on the sides of the street or square.

Judging by its depth below the high-tide mark, I would guess that this rarely-exposed jetty at Wapping Old Stairs is quite old. And Wapping Old Stairs is the historic site of Execution Dock, where pirates were taken to be chained until three tides had washed over them. Draw your own conclusions.

One of my favorite secret spots in Orange County. This abandoned Arizona Iced Tea factory is an amazing sight... it's massive and the whole place looks like a movie set... perfectly demolished. We found record books on the floor that date to the 1980's... there are some rooms in this place that are terrifying. Kind of a city-blair-witch feel. My buddy and I just filmed a scene for our new short film in this place... the film is called FOLLOWING WINTER..... more on that soon.
