Former site of the Kotsukappara jizo
This site, just behind Minami Senju station marks the location of the Kotsukappara execution grounds, which was in use for over 200 years until the mid-Meiji period. A 3-meter stone jizo had stood here as a memorial. Following the March 11, 2011 earthquake, however, the statue was judged to be in danger of collapsing, and was dismantled. The pedestal, head and arm are still here.
The grounds were in use from 1651 until the final execution here in the 1870s, during which time an estimated 200,000 were killed. The jizo was erected in 1741. The March 11 Tohoku earthquake in 2011 caused the left arm to separate from the body and the upper body to slide dangerously to the side (it had survived a much stronger shake from the Tokai earthquake in 1923), so the rest of the statue was taken apart on March 17th.
