One of my favorite black and white photos from last year. The mood here with low light and gesture of the clouds really pulls the viewer in. It made me realize you don’t need sunlight to capture stunning infrared photos. In this little photo you cannot tell but the infrared cuts through the haze showing how sharp the distant buildings are in the background.

Tip: To make an object/subject appear lighter without losing details is by lowering the contrast and exposure of the elements around the object. Many people simple select the object and increase the exposure or lift the white slider. This can raise your subject’s Luminous Values above 80% removing details. When printed the subject looks lighter but the fine details are lost and washed out. If you want details in your brightest areas I recommend not exceeding 85% Luminance Value. If you are looking for bright areas with just bright tones of white no details then take your Luminous Values up to 85-95%.

On the lighthouse I kept my Luminius Values from 75-85%. This allowed me to keep the wonderful fine details while maintaining a bright subject.

...And, while the sky grows dim and dimmer,

Feel no untold and strange distress¬

Only a deeper impulse given

By lonely hour and darkened room,

To solemn thoughts that soar to heaven,

Seeking a life and world to come...

=Evening Solace, Charlotte Bronte=

"When once the sun sinks in the west,

And dew-drops pearl the evening's breast;

Almost as pale as moonbeams are,

Or its companionable star,

The evening primrose opens anew

Its delicate blossoms to the dew;

And, shunning-hermit of the light,

Wastes its fair bloom upon the night;

Who, blindfold to its fond caresses,

Knows not the beauty he possesses.

Thus it blooms on till night is bye

And day looks out with open eye,

Abashed at the gaze it cannot shun,

It faints and withers, and is done."

I was really enjoying the view and I just had to capture this scene and share it with you.

Looking down into Broughton, and to the hills of Broughton Heights behind, from the fort on Whitslade Hill.

The evening light was quite stunning and it made the trip worthwhile. It had been pretty dismal for a while with heavy hail showers and very strong winds.

Taken in the 'China: Through the Looking Glass' exhibition (May-September 2015).

This exhibition explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. In this collaboration between The Costume Institute and the Department of Asian Art, high fashion is juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, including films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery.

From the earliest period of European contact with China in the sixteenth century, the West has been enchanted with enigmatic objects and imagery from the East, providing inspiration for fashion designers from Paul Poiret to Yves Saint Laurent, whose fashions are infused at every turn with romance, nostalgia, and make-believe. Through the looking glass of fashion, designers conjoin disparate stylistic references into a pastiche of Chinese aesthetic and cultural traditions.

The exhibition features more than 140 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear alongside Chinese art. Filmic representations of China are incorporated throughout to reveal how our visions of China are framed by narratives that draw upon popular culture, and also to recognize the importance of cinema as a medium through which to understand the richness of Chinese history.

Wrapped up for a cool night in the dark forest...

Feeling in a shadowy kinda mood today. This was taken in the Jewish Ghetto (Ghetto Nuovo). These two old ladies where standing bemused outside this block of flats, clearly debating if this was indeed their final destination. I really love how the wide anlge stretches those already lengthening shadows (like sticky goo) and emphasises that fading and gorgeous evening light..
