This image is based on a photograph of asphalt painted with a handicap access symbol. Weather-cracked pain and asphalt both contribute to the crackled, map-quality of the image.

After his arrest, Christ was crowned with thorns, cloaked in a purple robe and mocked as 'King of the Jews'. The high priests brought him to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who did not wish to sentence him to death. Rembrandt represents his dilemma masterfully. Pilate refuses to take his rod - a traditional sign of judicial sovereignty - because he is unwilling to pass judgement.

This glass prism was etched by Laurence Whistler and donated to the Cathedral in memory of his brother, Rex. The prism slowly rotates, allowing the viewer to see how the etchings on the three sides interact.
