After his arrest, Christ was crowned with thorns, cloaked in a purple robe and mocked as 'King of the Jews'. The high priests brought him to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who did not wish to sentence him to death. Rembrandt represents his dilemma masterfully. Pilate refuses to take his rod - a traditional sign of judicial sovereignty - because he is unwilling to pass judgement.

1664; 4 5/8 x 4 1/8 in.; Etching. Signed and dated in the plates: "Rembrandt f. 1664". Second state.

In an effort to create a race of hybrid superscientists, I researched portraits of dozens of notable members of the scientific community and sliced them them up along a grid. The recombinant images resulting from the shuffling of the tiles were burned onto a chemical mask on a metal plate, which was then etched in acid. This print calls into question the creative process as much as it does the process of representation.

This glass prism was etched by Laurence Whistler and donated to the Cathedral in memory of his brother, Rex. The prism slowly rotates, allowing the viewer to see how the etchings on the three sides interact.

This shows only a portion of an approximately 10x18 inch plate. The print was made to cover a book -- I used the basic plate for the skeleton book by adding additional plates for the spine and the skeleton dropped in to the rectangle opening above. Without the book defining plates added, I liked the print on its own also.

In the course of researching an article I'm writing in Wikipedia about Brattle Street in Cambridge, MA, I came across a relevant book from 1879 with lots of information and pictures, such as this image of buildings I walk past on many days en route to Harvard Square.
