Etching on Zinc. 35x25 cm.

I took the subject of this print from a photograph saved from flickr some time ago. Unfortunately, I did not save the author's name, along with the image, and could not find it, even by exploring photographs of dry sunflowers on both the flickr and google search engines. I hope the owner of the original image has no problem with an intaglio reproduction of it; I would consider it a d'apres and homage. I find the photo really beautiful. I would like to be able to give credits to the original subject. If anyone knows of it, please come forward.

The etching press is a wonderful manual machine with a metal roller which moves slowly as the huge wheel is pulled round.

This time a drypoint plate with chine-colle detail is being printed on 250 gsm Fabriano.

An open edition copper plate etching.

The workshop has begun to run low on some resources and so this colour mix didn't have as much white as I would have liked. It's certainly bold!

In 1991 I attended an adult education course "Etchings" and this is one of the results.

------------------------------------

Etching is traditionally the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal.

In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid.[15] The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle[16] where he or she wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, technically called the mordant (French for "biting") or etchant, or has acid washed over it.[18] The acid "bites" into the metal (it converts metal into salt solution and hydrogen) to a depth depending on time and acid strength, leaving behind the drawing skillfully carved into the wax on the plate. The remaining ground is then cleaned off the plate. For first and renewed uses the plate is inked in any chosen non-corrosive ink all over and the surface ink drained and wiped clean, leaving ink in the etched forms.

The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it).[19] The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.

This is an etching I did in my print making workshop. This is actually printed on cotton not paper but I really like how it's turned out. I coloured it with watered down red acrylic paint which also worked pretty well. If I ever learn to quilt I think this would make a lovely patch.

I was thinking about possibly doing a swap; one of these hand painted, printed squares of fabric for a couple of squares of lovely patterned fabric. Just let me know if you're interested. :)
