United States Senator Chris Van Hollen stressed the importance of funding civil legal services during his keynote address to the roughly 200 attorneys, judges, and members of the Maryland legal community at the 20th Annual Equal Justice Awards Breakfast on May 17, 2017, at Camden Yards in downtown Baltimore. MSBA President-Elect Sara H. Arthur and Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera, Court of Appeals of Maryland, echoed similar sentiments during their own remarks. Honorees included the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore City PD Major Sheree Briscoe, and The Daily Record (Community Partners for Justice Awards) and Equal Justice Council Co-Chair Martin S. Himeles, Jr. (Executive Director’s Award).
Since its creation in 1997, the Equal Justice Council has served as the fundraising arm of Maryland Legal Aid, securing donations from private attorneys across the state in support of Legal Aid’s mission to provide free civil legal assistance to low-income state residents.
