Preserved British Rail Type 1 Class 14 'Teddy Bear' 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic locomotive D9539 at Ongar Station on the heritage Epping Ongar Railway (EOR) in Essex (UK).

D9539 was a guest locomotive at the EOR courtesy of the Ribble Steam Railway.

D9539 was built at Swindon Works and entered service in April 1965. With an incredibly short service life D9539 was withdrawn from the mainline on April 1st 1968.

Organised as a "thank you" to staff and volunteers on the railway and buses. The class 205 taking shelter at sunny, but chilly, Ongar.

The distinctive Highland Rail 'Stag' logo on the side of preserved Brush Type 4 Class 47 diesel locomotive 47635 'Jimmy Milne' at Ongar Station on the heritage Epping Ongar Railway (EOR) in Essex (UK).

Note the British Rail double arrow logo at the bottom of the sticker. It is designed to show two arrows showing the direction of travel on a twin track line.

The logo first appeared in 1965 with the British Transport Commission's rebrand of British Railways was designed by Gerald Burney. It is brilliantly simplistic, instantly recognisable and arguably one of the most enduring of any logo design for a UK only brand.

Despite privatisation and the end of British Rail from 1997 the double arrow remains in use on tickets, direction signs and as the National Rail brand logo.

I'm confused about Highland Rail. It doesn't seem to officially exist in the British Rail sectorisation era of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Was Highland Rail a sub sub sub sub sector of the ScotRail sub sub sub sector which itself was a sub sub sector Regional Railways, a sub sector of British Rail?

I'll get my coat.. ;-)
