The first tunnel ever to be built under a river. Engineered by Marc Brunel and his son Isambard. Opened as a pedestrian tunnel in 1843 and converted to a railway in 1865. Functioned as part of the London Underground until December 2007. Then it temporarily closed so the line could be converted to become part of the expanded 'Overground' network. It will shortly re-open - but on Fri & Sat 12/13 March 2010 it was opened to pedestrians for the first time in 145 years.

North Carolina National Guard Soldiers start Operation Vigilant Guard with a roar as chainsaw teams of the 882nd Engineer Company cut and cleared road debris at Camp Butner, in Stem, N.C., March 7, 2015. The operation is a statewide National Guard Bureau training event with multiple NCNG units demonstrating National Guard response to natural and manmade disasters with civilian partners including North Carolina Department of Public Safety. “It is an excellent opportunity for training and to work with public safety,” said Army Brig. Gen. Kenneth Beard, North Carolina National Guard Assistant Adjutant General for Sustainment. The teams deployed as a multi-functional force package on a real world mission to open roads choked with fallen trees from recent winter storms. Seer/director Michael Reich, wizard/editor Forrest Borie, and white witch/set designer Tamarra Younis tapped their deepest inner goth vibes to film doom-folk artist Chelsea Wolfe. To enjoy this truly spellbinding performance we suggest you turn down the lights, don headphones, relax and get yourself into a gloomy Portishead-meets-Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein state of mind… just let the grime and the glow wash over you.

BIO

California native Chelsea Wolfe has always embodied both the darkness and the light. Although her music is a raw strain of electric folk tinted by black metal and deep blues, it never wallows in despair. Instead, it wraps itself like a cloak around the human experience, encouraging uplift and seeking triumph. Her voice is a haunting call, warm and lingering, and her lyrics acknowledge life’s obscure and melancholy moments in service to the unlikely truths and beauty they so often reveal. It makes sense then that her influences run from Nick Cave and Selda Bagcan, to directors as varied as Ingmar Bergman and John Waters, with nods to the dramatic flair of Antony and Patti Smith.

Six children Silhouettes

These are SILHOUETTES - not shadows.

I took all of their photos while standing in the doorway with the bright sky behind them. I adjusted the colors with flickr toys and added their frame. These are actually silhouettes and not shadows. You can see the neighborhood trees showing in some of them. If you look close at the yellow one you can see his eye still.

I need to do some adjusting to make this work better but I am trying.

When doing the flickr toy they cut some of the older ones heads off. I want to also make our daughters "pink" somehow. Her hair is braided here and I would like one of her with her hair down. Just having fun playing in between loads of laundry.

A polar vortex, a mass of swirling Arctic air, made its way south into the United States, resulting in record temperature lows and snowfall across the Midwest. A total of 11 inches of snow hit Ann Arbor between January 5 and January 6, with temperatures reaching as low as -15F the evening of January 6.

While state offices and local businesses closed in response, the 'U' remains open as students returned from holiday break for the beginning of the winter semester on Wednesday, January 8.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Washtenaw County and Southeast Michigan until 10:00 p.m. on January 7, and a windchill warning will be in effect until 7:00 a.m. on January 8.

Established in 1865 Paxman is a major British brand of diesel engines. Ownership has changed on a number of occasions since the company's formation in 1865, and now the brand is part of MAN Diesel & Turbo. At its peak, the Paxman works covered 23 acres (9.3 ha) and employed over 2,000 people.

Paxman was founded by James Noah Paxman, Henry and Charles Davey as Davey, Paxman & Davey, Engineers in 1865, later Davey, Paxman & Co. which became a limited company in 1898 conducted business as general engineers and ironworkers. The company manufactured steam engines, boilers, agricultural machinery, and mill gearing. By the early 1870s the company was supplying machinery to the Kimberley diamond mines in South Africa.

In game, Norrax has just retaken Claw Island and begun the process of founding The Pact. I personally see it astaking a level in bad ass and decided his armor needed an upgrade. This is the Asuran Tier 2 armor.

Inspired by this Moleskinerie thread, and especially by Bill Chance's recommendation, I ordered a Rothco M-51 Engineer's Field Bag, in black. (More detail on the product is here.)

On the thread I wrote, "I use my very much lived-in fanny pack for knocking about town, but I switch to a backpack for air travel. Although the backpack combines requisite roominess with a carry-on-friendly size, it's a bit too clunky for my tastes. I'll see if I do better with the field bag."

When it came, I took a silver Sharpie to it so that it "matches" my luggage, shown here. It's a bit bulkier with my camera case inside it, but it still closes, and will take its maiden voyage later this week when I go to Readercon.

After running the last Wausau-Green Bay trains, J.J. went back to working out of his hometown of Sheboygan. Here he is pictured in the cab of the Edgewater coal power sitting in the yard. This would also be the last time I would see J.J. Thank you for being good to a young railfan.
