From several floors up a look at the dinner tables being set for a plush meal at the NMA.

Happy Bench Monday from this delightful little town!

We had some lunch here, sitting outside a cafe to the left of the shot...

A Subte line transfer and we arrived in Barrio Abasto to visit the art deco Mercado de Abasto building - not to shop, just to enjoy the buildings architectural attributes.

The mall’s distinguished façade along Corrientes Avenue features five huge leaded glass archways that are emblematic of the neighborhood, especially when lit in the evening.

Inside, a huge atrium floods the building with natural light. The centralized mall features over 250 stores, a children’s museum, a small theme park, a food court, and a cinema with 12 screens.

The unique building was originally the site of Buenos Aires’ central vegetable market between 1893 and 1984.

It slowly grew outward as the population boomed, until the original structure was demolished in the 1930’s to make room for a larger building.

The current art deco structure dates to 1934 and took three years to construct.

The building was designed by José Luis Delpini, Raul Bes and Slovenian-born architect, Viktor Sulčič — the same team that constructed Buenos Aires’ most famous stadium, La Bombonera in the La Boca neighborhood.

This was Buenos Aires’ golden age — the new market included all the latest amenities of the era including escalators, phone lines throughout the building and a connection with the underground subway.

A 1952 fire in the building burned for days but thanks to the sturdy old-world construction, Abasto survived the blaze and Delpini was able to restore the damaged parts.

The building has been a shopping mall since 1999.

Looking good for mid winter, but too nippy for a picnic.

From one of my walks. The light nicely lit this neighbor's little garden display. Of course, I'm sure another neighbor, hiding behind the curtains, was about to call the police when I suddenly moved on.

The Great Synagogue opened in 1845 by the Polish-Jewish community. It was repaired in 1865, redesigned in 1903 and 1909, repainted in Rococo style in 1936 by Ghershon Horowitz, then restored again in 1945 after WWII.

The Museum is located in the Synagogue Mare, that survived both World War II and Nicolae Ceauşescu’s reign of terror unscathed.p - amazing !

Today the synagogue hosts an exhibition entitled The Memorial of Jewish Martyrs “Chief Rabbi Dr. Mozes Rosen”, telling the WWII story of approximately 200,000 Romanian Jews who deported to camps in Transdniestr and Ukraine, and well over 100,000 Jews from Transylvania who died at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Romania murdered, in various forms, between 280,000 and 380,000 Jews in Romania and the war zone of Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transnistria Governorate.

During the late 1980s, just like many churches in the area, this synagogue was virtually surrounded by concrete buildings by the repressive Nicolae Ceauşescu regime to hide it from public view.

The synagogue is hard to find, hidden on three sides by ugly communist era public housing blocks, but worth the effort to see the meticulously restored interior and take in the main exhibition on Jewish life and the Holocaust in Romania.
