The "Quiver Tree Forest" is not far from Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia. Here you will find a unique collection of quiver trees that are around 200-300 years old and up to 9m high, also known as Kokerbooms. It's not actually a tree at all, it's a species of aloe. They owe their name to the Bushmen, who used them to carve quivers for their arrows.
You wine some and you lose some...
On August 27th 2021, I was fortunate enough to win one again as ATLU E186 passed though Bornim Grube with a southbound freight train just as the sun had found a way through the clouds :-)
Ein Disput in meinem Garten.
Maus: Und, was sagst DU dazu?
Elefant: Was,wie …
M. Was für Zahlen mein großer dicker Hellseher.
HELP, he’s done it again—a FAKE picture!!!
FAKE Mouse and Elephant want to “weigh in” with their first and last appearance on the previous FAKE post.
Mouse: So, what do YOU think?
Elephant: What, how… uh, yeah, you’re a cute mouse.
M. I know that, you clumsy oaf—I’m talking, of course, about the different opinions on the “crocodile-kudu-by-the-river FAKE picture.”
E. Oh, right, of course I have an opinion—namely, that we present ourselves perfectly here—but we probably don’t belong in the photo gallery, unfortunately, do we?
M. Yeah, I don’t think they like us very much here in this elitist club. Maybe we should start our own section or something, where our “Creator” can let loose and bring together people like us, where we’ll be properly appreciated.
E. “Creator”? What does that mean—I thought that was the AI—ah, wait… but it’s stupid… didn’t you say it only does what our creator at roba wants, and you guys tell it what to do?
M. Exactly, and now I want to know what he thinks of all this “rambling.”
E. I really don't care one way or the other—he doesn't have a mind of his own anyway—
he just wanted to know what his Flickr buddies thought about it.
M. Well, I think he was happy that so many people took part in the poll, shared their views, and provided information, etc.
E. Well, I think only a few people actually care about that—they just want to post and, above all, rack up as many comments and favorites as possible, honestly.
M. Oh, just shut your mouth, you stupid elephant FAKE—I think most “Flickrers” do a pretty good job, and they take nice photos, too, most of the time.
E. Oh, so now we’re getting personal, you grain-eating dwarf—the future belongs to us, you can see that from the numbers, too.
M. What numbers, my big fat clairvoyant?
E. Yeah, use your brain, my little mouse. The first picture with the oh-so-lovely landscape currently has 1070 views, 100 favorites, and 70 comments. The second one, thanks to our support—uh, AI support—has 4410 views, 225 favorites, and "175" comments. Well, now you’re speechless.
M. Typical big shot—you can’t compare those at all—the circumstances and facts are totally different.
But whatever, we’re signing off now, saying thanks and goodbye, and staying where we belong.
Or: A Hard Day's Light
Macro Monday: #HardLight
Backlit by sunlight through the living room window and deliberately overexposed. To prevent too many blown out parts I'd even set the exposure control to -0,7 EV. I do see the contradiction, underexpose in order to overexpose ;-), but the low February sun was so bright that it almost was too much. Processed in Luminar 3 and ON1 Photo RAW 2019 (the usual suspects: detail enhancement [small], microstructure, clarity, decreased whites/highlights, increased contrast and vibrance, tweaked HSL and curves, and brightened the background in Viveza). I have an image with better (correct) exposure, but it is a little on the soft side, and since the theme is "Hard Light"... And yes, that green thing in the lower left corner is a clothespin. It looked nicely odd, so I decided to leave it like that.

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!

ENG: To visit in neighboring Poland. Actually I wanted to visit the German / Polish fortress museum, but this was closed. So it was just a shopping trip in the Küstrin Mall.
Winter forest on the way to Hohneck, Vosges. Actually we were looking for chamois but found a lot of snow and hoarfrost.
Actually, I was at the lake for the sunset, but this couple was so fascinated that I was so fascinated that the sunset was suddenly no longer the goal of a picture.
Oh so what was in love with the two .... just a wonderful moment to watch the two.
Wish all a lot of love for today.
Actually, I just wanted to photograph the skyline of Frankfurt's financial district at night. After having photographed for almost three hours, I discovered this wonderful bridge construction in the opposite direction.

... ... actually I wanted to buy bread, but I was a little distracted ...
After admiring the macro photos of Jan Timmons-too and Dotsy McCurly with their respective LAOWA ultra macro lenses for some time now I finally purchased the manual Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Macro magnification lens (2:1 magnification)
These are the tiny beads of a bridal bag (the round beads are only 1 mm wide, the rectangular 1 x 2 mm).
I used a colour-changing LED light to get some colourful bokeh balls here (the bag is actually white).
This lens is manual (aperture ring and manual focus) and it is really fun, even if I have to delete a lot of images because of the very narrow focal range ; ))
A big thank you to Jan and Dotsy for introducing me to this 2:1 magnification macro lens and sharing their beautiful images!! <3
(P.S.: my camera asks to choose a focal length when mounting a manual lens, but there is only 55 or 65 mm suggested; that's why the EXIF shows 55 mm)
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Actually a beautiful evening mood - a few clouds, ripe grain, or harvested fields - actually an idyll. But appearances are deceptive, because only a few kilometers to the left the forest of Saxon Switzerland is on fire! I hope that the fire will soon be brought under control and extinguished, because with every square meter of burning forest we lose a piece of unique nature.
EN: There is not too much snow on the tracks, but RE 11016 whirls it up as it neared from Burg.
Actually, I had planned a completely different photo for today, but that has to wait another day. Because yesterday I saw this blooming orchid in my bathroom and in its center a fascinating scene.
It is the battle of good against evil that rages on in each of us every day (sometimes louder and sometimes quieter).
We see the orange yellow fire dragon below sticking its head out of its cave and above it the dove of peace spreading its wings, placating the dragon and keeping it in the cave. I hope you see them both too.
The dragon, the monster in all of us represents pain, anger, fear, violence and death. The dove, on the other hand, stands for balance, understanding, harmony and, last but not least, love.
And although the dragon seems so much stronger and more powerful, the gentle and unassuming pigeon carries so much more power.
So if you are looking for support, an ally for hard times, look for the dove of peace within you. The best thing about the inner dragon is just knowing it's there and knowing that you can control him.

As already written in the previous picture, the so-called "Bremen-intermodal" trains from Lokomotion/Kombiverkehr, which consist of trailers from the haulage companies Terratrans and Paneuropa, are actually always fully loaded. This is also the case for DGS 43822 from Verona Q. E. via München-Ost to Bremen-Grolland, which was transported to the far north by a TRAXX double on this summer's day: 185 665-7 ahead of 185 662-4.
It was one of those cold February days when the weather was supposed to be good since dawn ...
But nothing came of it and it started a shivering on the bridge just before Kirchberg in Tyrol, whether this morning even one of the 3 sketches would work in the sun.
The first train with Lokomotion 139 and the second train with MRCE 193 came completely in the shade.
More and more time passed and the clouds in the sky cleared for the first time, when by far the most beautiful ski-train with the E10 1309 of the AKE Eisenbahntouristik was the last to take the line in front of Kirchberg.
When the picture was taken, the joy of this picture was huge.
Destination of the train was Schwarzach St, Veit, after the cars were already out of Hamburg the whole night with the travelers on the way and were finally separated as a course car group in Wörgl from the actual train.
Like in any other zoo, the southern ground hornbill is behind bars for life in the Krefeld zoo.
The southern ground hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri, sometimes also known as red-cheeked hornbill, southern hornbill or kaffirhorn raven, is a species of bird from the hornbill family (Bucorvidae) and a character bird of the African savannas south of the equator.
The southern ground hornbill can actually only be confused with the northern ground hornbill (Sudan hornbill), which is found in the south-east of Uganda and in the north-west of Kenya.

Would space travel be possible in a steampunk world? Starships with steam propulsion ("Steamergy®"), maybe? But how would one create steam on a starship, and enough of it that the ship could reach superluminal speed and travel to far away galaxies without running out of fuel? The answer are: steam crystals. Crystals that are able to transform light into steam, accumulate the latter, and which can be reloaded by light. Ad infinitum. You don't believe me? I own such a crystal, and you can see it in action in my photo. I haven't figured out, yet, how the light to steam conversion works, but it works ;)
Wouldn't that be nice? And wouldn't that solve our energy problems? Well, in reality this is just a light blue, translucent fluorite octahedron which I'd placed onto / into the opening of an aroma diffusor / air damper. I'd wanted to use an element that gives you an idea about the scale of the scene, and at the same time something that would help to re-shape the simple "steam beam" that the air damper creates. Of course that beam, which is blown out of the small round opening of the air dampener, will eventually turn into cloudy swirls, but to photograph those wouldn't have worked in a macro setting, or rather the swirls would have looked fairly boring on their own. With the fluorite (size of the fluorite's visible upper half: 2 cm / 0,78 inches on each side of the triangles) placed directly upon / into the opening of the air damper, I was able to get three different steam beams, plus I could get pretty close to the fluorite = a macro image within MM's size limit.
The air damper itself is also an LED lamp with different colours (to give you an idea what I'm talking about, and what the device looks like, here's a link to a model similar to mine; the link opens in Amazon Germany: STRG+ www.amazon.de/Ankrs-%C3%84therische-Ultraschall-Luftbefeu...).
I'd chosen the purple permanent light to illuminate the fluorite from below. I've also used blue light (blue tealight holder on lamp) from the left while I had placed the EM-5 II (with the small accessory flash mounted) on the right side of the scene. The tricky part, apart from finding the correct camera settings, was to hit both remote cables' shutter buttons so that the EM-5 II (which is a little slower than the EM-1 III) would fire the flash before the faster EM-1 would go into long exposure mode due to lack of enough light. I can say as much: I've photographed an equal number of either totally black or (too) long exposed images with soft-looking steam, and only two with fairly well-defined steam and a nice-looking, well exposed, sharp fluorite. So in the end it was an easy choice to pick the MM photo ;) I should finally take some money and invest it into a decent external flashgun to be ready when another theme with similar lighting requirements such as "Smoke" comes along :) The EM-1 III didn't even come with a small accessory flash for the hotshoe, so a good external flash is overdue anyways.
P.S. Obviously steam / vapour isn't as "clean" as smoke. The tiny spots in the steam can't be grain (I guess), because there's is no grain in the other parts of the image, so maybe those are the tiny water droplets (or dust? It's always dust in macros) illuminated by the flash? I have no idea, and I hope you won't find the no-grain grain all too disturbing. I had the same "texture" in images I'd taken with ISO 800, and it didn't change when I lowered the ISO to 200, like here.
HMM, Everyone, and have a nice week ahead!
Mal ordentlich Dampf machen!

Onset of winter in April and I have to admit: I like it. Actually, one could almost set up a rule of thumb: the more uncomfortable the weather, the more exciting it is for the landscape photographer.
actually, this beautiful bird should be in this aviary and not on top of it. He somehow managed to escape. He seemed a bit worried though and he looked for the entrance to get back inside.

Today I'll stay one more day in the world of the very little ones. I recently found these two tiny baby snails on my freshly harvested lettuce. The larger of the two is less than 1 cm long. Actually, I wanted to add a cent on the leaf to better demonstrate the size, but then decided against it. The scene should appear as natural as possible.
The photo session with the two comrades turned out to be not so easy as the two were constantly on the move. Snails are slow if you look at them from a distance. When you try to focus on those tiny eyes up close (30 cm away), it looks completely different. And since I had to get very close, the shallow depth of field was the biggest challenge despite the flash and aperture 18. And then the picture should tell some kind of a story in any way.
So it happened that I only liked three of the 40 photos in the end. This is my favourite.

Actually, the grape harvest was already finished, but some grapes stay longer at the grape vine and it becomes late wine or even ice wine.

In autumn 2019 I was the last time at the Mediterranean Sea.....then came Covid-19
Surely the man's name isn't Luke and his horse's name isn't Jolly Jumper. I can assure you that the rider actually smoked cigarettes and he should be happy (lucky) because of the daily sunset rides. What do you think?
The photo shows neither a flower nor a bird (which I actually promised). The quality is borderline because it was almost dark when the picture was taken.
And yet I have to show you this beautiful hind and tell you the story about it.
My sister had recently rented a small house on the edge of the forest in Bohemia for four weeks. I spent the last two nights of her stay there with her.
My sister told me that a group of hinds would appear at the house from time to time, and one that was always particularly brave with a white nose, and would come close.
Luckily for me, they came by again on the last evening. Maybe to say goodbye to my sister.
When we saw the animals at the edge of the forest we were as quiet as a mouse and the beautiful lady here really came closer and closer until she was almost standing in front of the kitchen window. This photo was taken through a closed window on her way through the garden. Since it quickly got darker and darker, the close-ups are unfortunately of even worse quality afterwards. For me, however, these pictures are always a reminder of this magical moment.

Bodman, Lake Constance, Germany on a cold day.
The picture shows one of the locations that I am drawn to several times a year, especially in the early and late seasons. I especially like it when there are no boats here and the whole area is completely deserted. In winter on Lake Constance, you never know for sure whether it was another pandemic that finally allowed nature to rest, or whether a zombie apocalypse has taken place and we are, of course, the last to find out. Personally, I always discover the beauty of slowness here, without sailing boats, surfboards and tourists. The latter jump around here like they've been bitten by a monkey. Which raises the question again of what was actually going on here... ;)
Was erneut die Frage aufwirft, was hier eigentlich los war…;)

Tarator is a cold cucumber soup of Balkan cuisine and originally contains walnuts. However, since the Secretary is allergic to walnuts and also does not like them very much, he modified a classic recipe and prepared it without walnuts, but with grapes - it was tasty too.
Although I was a little bit disappointed on July 27th 2020 when I drove to Nudow, everything worked out in the end.
I actually wanted to make a picture of a train heading east with the sunflowerfield in the foreground. However, the fog was too persistent which meant, that the light just wasn't satisfactory. On the other hand, this obviously meant that I could shoot against the sun which I did at 06:19 am as a regional train to Königs Wusterhausen passed by...

The Silver-washed Fritillary actually prefers forest areas. However, this image from the end of July was taken in my garden, where I was able to observe several of these butterflies this year. Maybe that somehow is related to the extremely dry summer. In the meantime they have disappeared, I hope they will be back next year.

Upper colonnade at the Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) in Berlin. Taken on a hot and sunny afternoon this August during a photo walk with Sabine.R. By the time we returned from the Glockenturm (Bell Tower of the Olympic Stadium) the position of the late afternoon sun had created nice shadows up there. This could (and would) have worked very nicely in black and white, but I decided against it. If you take a closer look, you will see a red, a blue, and a yellow decorative line on the upper part of the third column from the left. In b&w those lines would have disappeared. Unfortunately I couldn't find any information about them. My first idea was that the colours represented those of the Olympic rings, but there are only three lines/colours instead of five, so whatever happened to green and black? Maybe the coloured lines don't mean a thing, maybe they are totally mundane, some markings for maintanance, because that part of the upper colonnade is seperated for the staff, catering and maintanance. In fact the area beyond my shooting position was roped off ;-)
Processed in Luminar and Aurora HDR. My first editing (I had already processed this some weeks ago) was almost black and white, very desaturated (except for those coloured lines) and harsh; too harsh, as I see it now, so I gave it a makeover, with more colour and an overall softer look. I hope you like it :-)
Have a great Sunday, dear Flickr friends!
Bis hierher und nicht weiter...
Bitte heranzoomen :-)
Öhm no, not really... just the Way to Vilmnitz on Rügen Island..
Wish you a nice Sunday! :
Erholsamen Sonntag wünsche ich!
Country: England
Location: Parton / Cumbrian Coast
Train: Northern Class156 Local Train to Carlisle
How must it feel when you discover or invent something that bears your name forever? Well, only very few of us will be able to find out for ourselves (it's a pity).
One person who managed to do this, however, was the French painter Jacques Majorelle, in whose former garden we are here and in which, by the way, his studio was also located. His invention, if one may say so, perhaps his creation, was a color that is present everywhere here, Majorelle blue. And even if his works have been somewhat forgotten in the meantime, everyone remembers his name because of this park here.
However, this is not really, or only partially, due to Monsieur Majorelle himself, but to the famous person who bought the park in 1980, in a rather dilapidated state, and restored it to its former glory, the famous French fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent. This name, which is known worldwide, attracts around 850,000 visitors a year, making the Jardin Majorelle one of the most popular sights in all of Morocco.

This wren chick in the undergrowth hears its mother calling and has come out of cover. Maybe there will be something to munch on?
Tech Detail: The exposure situation at the place was difficult, I worked freehand with a 1/100 sec., because of the proximity to the wren I had to use an aperture of 7.1 so that it was better captured by the depth of field and then ended up at ISO 3200, which is not really ideal for the 7DII. However, the already mentioned proximity to the birdie (no crop!) helped me to remove the image noise to some extend and I am satisfied with the result.
If you want to see this baby wren with the best resolution in full screen press the "l" (small L) and F11 keys. When enlarging the pic by just mouse clicking you lose quality. Enjoy!
I wanted to bring back some colour into my photo stream but this one definitely looks better in black and white.
It was pouring rain when I got to the forest, but I still stuck to my plan to follow the course of the stony creek Schönebecker Aue. My hope to find more beautiful spots that stand out as a good motif came true. Since it was still raining, I moved on, following the northern edge of the forest. I'll find my way back, I have a good sense of direction, I thought to myself. I turned right into a narrow deer crossing and from a distance I saw this fallen tree. I circled it several times in search of the perfect composition and then I found it: Standing in front of the crown, looking down the trunk towards the root. This time I opted for my 18-55 kit lens, there should be as little sky as possible in the picture in order to draw full attention to the forest and the main subject. The rain created a fantastic atmosphere, which I was able to reinforce later with a slight orton effect on the PC. I was very happy when I finished taking this photo. The rain subsided, the sun came out and I moved on towards the forest path. Once there, I quickly found the ditch that would later flow into the Schönebecker Aue creek, which I remembered from the winter before last. With his help I quickly got back on the forest path where his crossing is bordered by a beautiful palisade made of tree trunks. Firmly convinced to get back to the creek, if I follow the path to the left, it happened: I got lost.
I was not aware that this path was preceded by a t-junction and that it no longer ran to the west but instead to the south.
All I really had to do was follow the ditch and I would be back at the creek. Instead, after a while I found myself back in the center of the forest and realized that the way back to the creek and thus to my car would take a little longer that evening. Although the next day in the home office was exhausting due to my tiredness, it was worth it. This experience of being one with the forest, listening to the raindrops and the sounds of the nature is something very special, a different kind of meditation.

Just kidding !!
This citation made me laugh out loud as I am a coffee addict :D
This is one of the most important items in my kitchen:
My little one-mug-cafetière / french (or coffee) press
(capacity according to manufacturers data: 350 ml ... but it will spill if you put more than about 300 ml in it - this will do in the morning as my hubby doesn't drink coffee - don't know how he manages to get alive without a strong coffee : ))
Background illumination by a small LED light with rainbow colours
Happy Macro Mondays, everyone !
[Less than 3 inches: The metal press is 6.5 cm in diameter, the big holes are 0.6 cm wide, the small ones 0.4 cm]

Blue is the favorite color of many people. At least that is true for me.
------------------------------------------
The “wooden façade” of the Centre Pompidou-Metz is not actually a conventional façade, but rather a spectacular timber roof and structural system. It is considered one of the building’s most distinctive features, designed by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines.
Originally at home in Africa, but has also been living in German waters for a long time.
The Glanville fritillaries swirled around the thrift. They were so unbelievable fast, that 1/2000 sec. was a little bit to long. But it was a fantastic spectacle.
Sometimes it's a case of good or bad luck. My intention on that summer day basically was to take a picture of the new Skoda Munich-Nuremberg-Express, when the railway signal turned "green" a few minutes too early. It was quite close, because a little cloud and Lokomotion's 151 060-1 did arrived simultaneously. In the end I was lucky enough to take this picture of 151 060-1 hauling a freight train frum Nuremberg shuntimg yard to Munich.

I chose the time of year for this trip to see whales.
Today was my first encounter with these wonderful animals.
Unfortunately, I quickly realized that observing and, above all, photographing the whales is extremely difficult. Especially when the water is so turbulent. We didn't actually expect to see any whales here, but later in Hermanus we were able to observe many. But even then, good photos are in short supply, although we were able to observe them from a very short distance.
Now we see a single animal that only appears briefly here and there and the photo-click is often too late. Regardless, it is a unique experience to see these mighty animals. Southern Right Whales are mainly found in this area, often with young. The females weigh about 40 tons and are about 15 m long. They have a lifespan of around 50 years.
