The second thermal loop involves the A/C system. Valeo has optimized the compressor’s technology in order to meet the specific needs of electric and hybrid vehicles. Unlike ICEVs, it is driven by a dedicated electric motor, meaning that integration into the engine compartment is more flexible, and that the system can operate while the vehicle is stationary, which is not possible for an ICEV. The optimized scroll compressor is designed for achieving low noise and vibration level, a distinctive benefit in the light of the low noise levels in electric vehicle cabins. The scroll technology compact and highly efficient, as well as the performance of the brushless electric motor, result in reducing significantly current consumption. It also increases the overall efficiency of the climate system because of the presence of an oil separator. The compressor is compatible with the R1234yf refrigerant fluid in line with future EU regulations.

My Brompton. I'm not an engineer. I have no feel for mechanics but I respect this machinery for its simplicity - the most efficient of all inventions for transmitting human energy into forward motion. I have a relationship with this item. I look after its parts. My feet have been turning these pedals (and their occasional replacements) transmitting my best efforts through the chain to the Brompton's 16" wheels for several years and many miles. Thus I travel under my own power. I know the chain quite well, having removed it, cleaned it in spirits and let it lie in a bowl of lubricating oil for a while before hanging it to drip-nearly-dry for a night, putting it back in place, turning pedals, rear chain set and wheel for 30 seconds, before setting out for my next destination.

Whether efficient public transit, climate change, or air and water pollution, marginalized communities are regularly denied access to healthy environments. Differences in power and political voice create differential impacts of our changing environment—natural and built—on these communities, compromising access to basic necessities like clean water and breathable air. Legislation to redress these differential impacts requires policymakers to work hand in glove with the communities they represent.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed - physician, epidemiologist, and newly appointed Director of the Wayne County Health, Human & Veterans Services Department, and a former Ford School Towsley Policymaker in Residence - for a conversation with policymakers at the intersection of social justice and environmental concerns. Dr. El-Sayed was joined by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Michigan Senator Stephanie Chang (MPP/MSW '14) to reflect on their work to address environmental injustice in Michigan and beyond, and the challenges and opportunities ahead. for more info: Fordschool.umich.edu

Efficient Driving Tips

Slow Down - Gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.Limit Idling - Idling for 15 minutes can burn 1/4 gallon of fuel.

Drive Sensibly - Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.

Use Cruise Control - Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.

Use the Right Oil - Because oil reduces engine friction and friction makes an engine work harder, using the manufacturer's recommended grade of oil improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.

Plan and Combine Trips - Combining errands into one trip saves time and money. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multi-purpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.

Chevrolet Fuel Solution Technologies

Extended Range Electric Vehicles - Use battery power for propulsion.

Hybrid Technology - Use a combination of battery power and gas engine for propulsion.

Direct Injection - Injects fuel directly into the combustion chambers to ensure the precise amount of fuel is used at the precise moment it is needed for improved fuel economy.

Variable Valve Timing - Improves fuel economy and performance by controlling intake and exhaust valve openings so that it occurs at the optimum moment, increasing efficiency across the entire operating range of the engine.

6-speed Transmissions - Offer more gear ratios to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range.

Active Fuel Management - Engine management system that enables the engine to automatically operate on half its cylinders under light load conditions, improving fuel efficiency and reducing fuel consumption (V8).

Chevrolet Car

VOLT

Extended range electric vehicle provides 35 miles of gas and tail pipe emissions-free driving.

Gasoline powered generator extends total range to more than 370 miles.

CRUZE ECO

10% Aerodynamic improvement over non-Eco models - Lowered ride height, active aerodynamic shutters on lower grille and minimized turbulence with underbody panels and an aero decklid spoiler.

Weight reduction - The Eco weighs 214 pounds less than the Cruze 1LT.

Powertrain modifications - On the Eco equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the 6th gear is set-up for ultra high efficiency.

Manual transmission models return a best-in-class 42 mpg highway, the best highway mileage of any gasoline engine in America.

Vehicles with a manual transmission can travel more than 500 highway miles between fill-ups. The automatic has more fuel capacity and gets a range of over 580 highway miles.

MALIBU

A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models for 2011.

Every 4-cylinder Malibu has a fuel economy rating of 22 city/33 highway mpg - better highway fuel economy than a comparable Toyota Camry.

Gets more than 500 highway miles between fill-ups.

IMPALA

Fuel economy: 19 city/29 highway mpg.

Gets nearly 500 highway miles between fill-ups.

CAMARO

Camaro 2LS models have fuel economy ratings of 19 city/30 highway mpg.

Camaro V8 models equipped with an automatic transmission deliver 16 city/25 highway mpg.

Gets more than 550 miles between fill-ups (2LS).

Chevrolet Crossover/Truck

EQUINOX

Delivers best-in-class non-hybrid fuel economy of 22 city/32 highway mpg for front-wheel drive 4-cylinder models.

All-wheel drive 4-cylinder models also deliver a best-in-class 20 city/29 highway mpg.

Better highway mpg than Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4 and even Ford Escape Hybrid without the increased cost.

Gets up to 600 highway miles between fill-ups (I4, FWD).

TRAVERSE

With 24 MPG highway, Traverse FWD offers better fuel economy than any eight-passenger crossover.

Power of a V8 with a fuel-efficient V6.

Class-leading cargo room behind the third row. More than any competitor including the 2012 all-new Ford Explorer.

SILVERADO

Half ton 2WD/4WD crewcabs equipped with the 5.3L V8 have better capability and fuel economy than a comparable Toyota Tundra.

Two-wheel-drive Crew Cab models can be equipped with the XFE Package, which improves aerodynamics and reduces vehicle mass, a 5.3L V8 engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission and an efficient final drive ratio to help Silverado deliver fuel economy of 15 city/22 highway mpg.

These numbers are best-in-class; in order to get similar numbers from another manufacturer, you would have to downgrade to a 6-cylinder engine.

Gets more than 550 miles between fill-ups (XFE

A compact and efficient wicketkeeper, and a dogged late-order batsman, Ian Smith succeeded Warren Lees in the New Zealand side in Australia in 1980-81 and aside from a prolonged absence through injury in 1981-82, was a regular for more than a decade thereafter. His finest hour came at Auckland in 1990-91 when, arriving at the crease with New Zealand on 131 for 7 against India, he cracked a remarkable 173 off 136 balls including 24 off one over from Atul Wassan. It was the highest score by a Test No. 9. In 1991-92 he held seven catches in an innings against Sri Lanka, retiring after the World Cup that same season. He moved effortlessly into the commentary box and now travels the world in that capacity.

Green washrooms at the Earth Rangers Centre feature foaming, phosphate-free, liquid soaps that minimize algal blooms in aquatic ecosystems and produce 4x more washes than traditional liquid soaps. The faucets are also mounted with solar panels that save 0.11 KWH per day, and use 25% of the water that a standard faucet typically uses. The Dyson Air Blades in the washrooms are the world's most efficient hand driers, as well as the fastest, and use 80% less energy than a standard warm-air hand dryer. Not only do Earth Rangers washrooms also feature ultra high efficiency American Standard toilets, but images of underwater habitat are also featured to create a lifelike underwater environment where visitors can also learn about current environmental statistics.

The Scaled Composites Model 281 Proteus is a tandem-wing High-Altitude Long Endurance aircraft designed by Burt Rutan to investigate the use of aircraft as high altitude telecommunications relays. The Proteus is actually a multi-mission vehicle, able to carry various payloads on a ventral pylon. An extremely efficient design, the Proteus can orbit a point at over 65,000 feet (19,800 m) for more than 18 hours. It is currently owned by Northrop Grumman. Proteus has an all-composite airframe with graphite-epoxy sandwich construction. Its wingspan of 77 feet 7 inches (23.65 m) is expandable to 92 feet (28 m) with removable wingtips installed. Proteus is an "optionally piloted" aircraft ordinarily flown by two pilots in a pressurized cabin. However, it also has the capability to perform its missions semi-autonomously or flown remotely from the ground. Under NASA's Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology (ERAST) project, NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center assisted Scaled Composites in developing a sophisticated station-keeping autopilot system and a satellite communications (SATCOM)-based uplink-downlink data system for Proteus' performance and payload data. The Proteus wing was adapted for use on the Model 318 White Knight carrier aircraft, which is the launch system for Rutan's Tier One spacecraft and the DARPA X-37. Flight testing of the Proteus began with its first flight on July 26, 1998 at the Mojave Airport and continued through the end of 1999. In June, Proteus was deployed internationally for the first time, debuting at the Paris Air Show. It was flown non-stop from Bangor, Maine to Paris. During the week-long show, it flew each day, demonstrating its capabilities as a telecommunications platform. The Proteus is the current holder of a number of FAI world records for altitude (class: C1-e: landplanes 3,000-6,000 kg, Group: 3, turbojet), set in cooperation with NASA Dryden. The highest altitude achieved was 63,245 feet (19,277 m) in October 2000. Proteus was included in the list of the "100 Best of 1998 Design," Time Magazine, December 21, 1998.The model made entirely by hand in Italy by the company Piazzai Models of Arona, Novara, is made of Ureol and 1:48 scale www.piazzaimodels.it
