is what this flower looks to me, or a very efficient hiding place for insects. :))

Of Asian origin, Celosia Cristata ("Crista-de-galo" in Portuguese) can also be found in Africa and South America. Easily recognized for its flowers, which look more like a brain, with flowering between the beginning and end of Summer, the species has bright colors, being red, pink, cream, purple and white.

Very bright and with a velvety texture, they are extremely easy plants to cultivate but in full sun (6 to 9 hours a day). Well-drained and nutrient-rich soils will keep the plant more lush.

Celosia flowers can last up to 30 days, but they need pruning after this time for new inflorescences to appear while the summer climate is still favorable for its development.

This plant hides a great medicinal and cultural power. Because it has anti-metastatic and immunostimulant effects, it is used in alternative medicine by many people for cataract treatment purposes, eye spill, hyperopia, astigmatism and myopia.

Celosia is also very popular in African cuisine as an ingredient, being in Nigeria the most consumed vegetable by the population. Its seeds are also a great source of natural edible oil.

Cleo still likes to play but she would NEVER run after a toy. As she is an energy efficient creature she prefers to play while she is comfortably lying on a cushion and only has to lift the paw to catch the toy. Cleo has always tried to avoid any waste of energy, even 16 years ago when she was a kitten....

''Since incandescent light bulbs use more energy than alternatives such as CFLs and LED lamps, many governments have introduced measures to ban their use, by setting minimum efficacy standards higher than can be achieved by incandescent lamps.

In the US, federal law has scheduled the most common incandescent light bulbs to be phased out by 2014, to be replaced with more energy-efficient light bulbs. Traditional incandescent light bulbs were phased out in Australia in November 2009.''

When Mr. Lewis needed a barn for his large livestock herd,he thought "outside the box",and built a more efficient round barn which was on his family farm till the 1990's.At that time, the family decided for it to survive,it needed to be donated to an organization who would maintain it.It ended as a part of the Adams County,IL. fairgrounds along with many other historic subjects-an old one room schoolhouse and an old general store some examples...

The Cuckoo - Bad bird? No! Just doing what nature has taught. Very efficient flyer (not unlike a kestrel or sparrowhawk) and of course the females laying their eggs in the nests of other birds (throwing the resident eggs over the side) and then clearing off leaving the nest owner to look after (feed etc.) the Cuckoo chick! No moral's in the wild! You cannot judge by human standards (although some human behavior fall's well below those of the animal Kingdom)., but the Cuckoo has a unique way of avoiding child care!

The dragonflies are wonderful. They are very efficient predators, they can intercept prey mid-air, they can move each of their four wings independently from the others, they have near-360-degree vision with their eyes which contain 30,000 facets, each bringing in information about the insect's surroundings. Top of it they're beautiful insects :)

The gannet is a large seabird that is emblematic of the Atlantic coast.

Gannets nest in dense colonies on cliffs or rocky islands that are inaccessible to land predators. These colonies are mainly found in the North Atlantic.

They feed mainly on fish such as herring and mackerel, which they catch by diving.

Their binocular vision allows them to locate their prey accurately underwater.

The gannet is a fascinating example of adaptation to the marine environment, combining aerial elegance with efficient underwater hunting.

Learning how to skillfully and efficiently handle an as wide as possible range of photo - processing tools is an additional reason that turned me into a "serious" lover of the art of photography ... I don't like modifying the capture's fundamental traits ... I also strongly dislike removing or even adding elements that weren't there in the first place ... But I very much enjoy creating a low light surrounding ambient atmosphere that exhales tranquillity and helps revealing all the effort hidden behind the scene's capture ... I like stressing out the subtle contrast between the light around the frame's main point of interest and its surrounding environment ...

Iconic view of the Grand Canal from the Ponte dell' Accademia - except I took this from a water taxi while passing under that famous bridge. Standing tall in the background is a major icon of Venice, the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.

In the center of the shot is yet another icon, a vaporetto heading straight for you. These water buses are an efficient way to get around Venice and multi-day passes can be purchased at your hotel (highly recommended if you stay for 3 days or more). The locals call them "Batèo".

The Grand Canal is the lungs, major artery and highway of Venice. The banks are lined with more than 170 buildings, most of which date from the 13th to the 18th century, and display up front the art and architecture created by the Republic of Venice thoughout its history.

A scene that reminds me of a very different time. I asked if I could take some pictures and employees were friendly and always willing to chat a bit about operations. There's also a lot in this shot that speaks of an older time, such as code lines, water towers, a sand tower, classic buildings and a ground cover of diesel fuel and oil. It's a much cleaner and more efficient time now but much less charismatic.

Efficient groundcover, it has outgrown its allotted space and is a little invasive, but when these lovely little flowers come out in May I'd rather have too much than not enough...

Note: This photo was actually taken when I was living and working in Shanghai. That is my coffee mug in a stone sink.

Photographic notes: The dripping/leaking tap into my coffee mug gave me an idea, one day, when free from work, to capture the free-fall of the water drop. If you think it is easy, try it. Try accurately focusing on water, for example. So, I decided to float a toothpick on the water and focus on that. Great idea, except the water drop was not ns focus. I decided to get a wet black thread and suspend it from the tap/faucet. Things were looking up. OK, next was getting the exposure correct, getting the shadow and highlights and contrast correct. Well, I discovered that Shutter Speed was not the most effective nor the most efficient to freeze the free-fall of the water drop and timing when to release the shutter complicated it. Often, the water drop had already splashed into the mug or rebounded, as in this photo. The shape of this one fascinated me, because it has a human form. What I discovered was that using off-camera flash and using the speed of light was the most effective. Still, I did much trial and error.

U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds - #126 in Explore 5/5/22

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, known to all the world as the “Thunderbirds”, are the Air Force’s Ambassadors in Blue. They represent the 500,000 men and women of the United States Air Force. The Thunderbirds plan and present precision aerial maneuvers to exhibit the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft and the high degree of professional skill required to operate those aircraft. The Thunderbirds squadron is composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support officers, four civilians and more than 100 enlisted personnel.

The Thunderbirds air demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The four-jet diamond formation demonstrates the training and precision of Air Force pilots, while the two solo aircraft highlight some of the extreme capabilities of the F-16. In all, the pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a single demonstration. An aerial demonstration lasts 60 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for the ground show before takeoff.

During a typical season the Thunderbirds perform no more than 70 air demonstrations in 35 cities throughout the nation. More than 280 million people in all 50 states and 57 foreign countries have seen the red, white and blue Thunderbirds jets.

Thunderbirds were officially activated June 1, 1953, as the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit at Luke AFB, Arizona. The unit was nicknamed the “Stardusters.” Their first aircraft was the straight-winged F-84G Thunderjet. The team transitioned to the swept-winged F-84F Thunderstreak in 1955. In June 1956, the team moved to its current home at Nellis AFB in Nevada and traded the veteran F-84 for the world’s first supersonic fighter, the F-100 Super Sabre. In early 1964, the team changed briefly to the F-105B Thunderchief, but after only six shows returned to the F-100. In 1969 the team transitioned to the F-4E Phantom and then in 1974 to the T-38 Talon, a more fuel efficient jet. In 1983 the Thunderbirds began flying the

Building a fence across a lake might not be the most efficient way of retaining water, or the smartest use of spare barbed wire and wood... I have to assume the lake wasn't there when the fence went up. Maybe the drainage pattern has changed; maybe there has been more snow and more rainfall in recent years than previously.

That said, I couldn't resist stopping on the way to the bird photo location (same morning as previous shot of road & car). I saw the fence; I braked. There was no traffic. Several ducks swam away. You can see them in this photo, tiny dots with v-shaped wake. Pre-dawn glow began to light up the eastern horizon. The air was cool. I felt unhurried and relaxed; I'm on prairie time now. It differs from regular time - in its timeless quality. I can't explain it any other way.

I've just gotten home and unpacked from another trip to the same location. This time I decided, more or less at the last moment, to take a motel room for the night. That put me within easy reach of my destination, and allowed both an evening and dawn shoot in the same trip. In addition, a grocery run and a slight back strain. Oh, well. We have to accept the consequences of our actions, good and not-so-good. This trip was mostly good. I will catch up with your latest uploads ASAP, but right now a painkiller/muscle relaxant and mid-afternoon nap are calling to me louder than anything else.

Griffon vultures have been used as model organisms for the study of soaring and thermoregulation. The energy costs of level flight tend to be high, prompting alternatives to flapping in larger birds. Vultures in particular utilize more efficient flying methods such as soaring. Compared to other birds, which elevate their metabolic rate to upwards of 16 times their basal metabolic rate in flight, soaring griffon vultures expend about 1.43 times their basal metabolic rate in flight. Griffon vultures are also efficient flyers in their ability to return to a resting heart rate after flight within ten minutes.

As large scavengers, griffon vultures have not been observed to seek shelter for thermoregulation. Vultures use their bald heads as a means to thermoregulate in both extreme cold and hot temperatures. Changes in posture can increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%. This change allows for the more than doubling of convective heat loss in still air. Griffon vultures have also been found to tolerate increased body temperatures as a response to high ambient temperatures. By allowing their internal body temperature to change independently of their metabolic rate, griffon vultures minimize their loss of water and energy in thermoregulating. One study in particular (Bahat 1995) found that these adaptations have allowed the Griffon vulture to have one of the widest thermal neutral zones of any bird.

It declined markedly throughout the 19th–20th centuries in much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, mainly due to direct persecution and "bycatch" from the poisoned carcasses set for livestock predators (Snow and Perrins 1998, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). In some areas a reduction in available food supplies, arising from changes in livestock management practices, also had an impact (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development (Strix 2012) and electrocution has been identified as a threat (Global Raptors Information Network 2015). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for veterinary purposes pose a threat to this species. One case of suspected poisoning caused by flunixin, an NSAID, was recorded in this species in 2012 in Spain (Zorrilla et al. 2015). Diclofenac, a similar NSAID, has caused severe declines in Gyps vulture species across Asia.

Legambiente rejects health of the sea near the mouths of rivers

Sewerage and purification system. Inefficient. So as to cause pollution of eight mouths of rivers of the ion. And 'what emerges from figures released by Legambiente at the historic Schooner Green campaign critical of the marine system - coast of Calabria. Figures released last Saturday in Croton at the XXII stage of the ship's voyage environmentalist. And there are eight points of the environmental samples from volunteers, eight mouths Calabrian were heavily polluted, because contaminated by microbiological pollution. Contamination due to the low efficiency of both the sewer system, as the purification system. An alarm sounded once again by Legambiente, because compared to samples of 2009 the situation remained unchanged. This shows that Calabria is still far from a policy capable of efficient purification filter and purify the waste of the five provinces.

And the area of Crotone, with 88% of the purification system, suffers from the lack of effective action treatment. As confirmed by Maria Rosaria Palucco, member of the Steering crotonese Legambiente: <>. The proposed solution promises even ripped the municipal administration, in the person of Peppino Vallone, Mayor of Croton, are two: the upgrade of the sewerage system Crotone and the demolition of illegal artifacts Pythagorean territory. <>.

And it is especially the quality of the sea to affect the environmental organization, as compared to 2009 the condition of the Ionian Sea is almost unchanged. He also confirmed Nuncio Cirino Grocco of the national secretariat Legambiente: <>. And these are the areas suffering the region: the mouths of rivers Alli, Esaro, Fiumarella and Neto, those streams Coriglianeto, Trionto, Arango, downstream exhaust purifying reported out of service by the municipality. It 'also including the river that crosses the territory of Sellia Marina.

Analyses of Schooner Green then an alarm precise, since highlighting a situation that perfect picture deterioration of rivers and watercourses, sewers and now becoming a place of landfills, industrial countries of the Calabrian. Whether the problem is added the adoption of new legislation on bathing, the situation can only get worse. < Province of Crotone-Saraga said Franco, Regional Executive of the environmental effect of the new-legge, not the 2 km swimming last year are now balneabili>>.

And many tourists and citizens Calabrian there is nothing left to do but wait. Turnaround in management policy purification systems.
