New energy efficient LED lighting illuminates the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge: red and white for the Canadian arch and red, white, and blue for the American arches. View of Sault Canal and bridge from the Sault Ste. Marie / St. Marys River boardwalk.

The International Bridge- -a 4.5 kilometer / 2.8 mile long metal Cantilever (suspended deck) Warren Through Truss two lane bridge with a two span arch over the American Soo Locks and a single span arch over the Canadian Sault Canal. It was designed by the New York architectural firm of Steinman, Boynton, Gronquist and London; the bridge opened October 1962. The bridge spans the St. Marys River and connects Sault Ste. Marie Michigan to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario.

The Sault Canal opened in 1895- - it was the world’s first electrically operated lock, and the world’s longest lock- -274 metres / 899 feet long and 18 metres / 59 feet wide. Closed in 1987 due to a lock wall collapse, the canal was reconstructed and reopened for recreational boating use in 1998. The Sault Canal is operated as a National Historic Site by Parks Canada.

Griffon vultures have been used as model organisms for the study of soaring and thermoregulation. The energy costs of level flight tend to be high, prompting alternatives to flapping in larger birds. Vultures in particular utilize more efficient flying methods such as soaring. Compared to other birds, which elevate their metabolic rate to upwards of 16 times their basal metabolic rate in flight, soaring griffon vultures expend about 1.43 times their basal metabolic rate in flight. Griffon vultures are also efficient flyers in their ability to return to a resting heart rate after flight within ten minutes.

As large scavengers, griffon vultures have not been observed to seek shelter for thermoregulation. Vultures use their bald heads as a means to thermoregulate in both extreme cold and hot temperatures. Changes in posture can increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%. This change allows for the more than doubling of convective heat loss in still air. Griffon vultures have also been found to tolerate increased body temperatures as a response to high ambient temperatures. By allowing their internal body temperature to change independently of their metabolic rate, griffon vultures minimize their loss of water and energy in thermoregulating. One study in particular (Bahat 1995) found that these adaptations have allowed the Griffon vulture to have one of the widest thermal neutral zones of any bird.

It declined markedly throughout the 19th–20th centuries in much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, mainly due to direct persecution and "bycatch" from the poisoned carcasses set for livestock predators (Snow and Perrins 1998, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). In some areas a reduction in available food supplies, arising from changes in livestock management practices, also had an impact (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development (Strix 2012) and electrocution has been identified as a threat (Global Raptors Information Network 2015). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for veterinary purposes pose a threat to this species. One case of suspected poisoning caused by flunixin, an NSAID, was recorded in this species in 2012 in Spain (Zorrilla et al. 2015). Diclofenac, a similar NSAID, has caused severe declines in Gyps vulture species across Asia.

This moment made for a perfect end to a long chase of this train that began 6 hours earlier near Cyr, Montana. After our second-to-last shot of this train near Noxon, Montana it took some "efficient" driving, prior knowledge of the spiderweb of back-roads between Noxon and Heron, and a bit of luck to get back to the highway and finally overtake this train by just a couple minutes. Seen here is one of MRL's rare unit talc trains led by a pair of SD70ACe's curving along the shimmering waters of Lake Pend Oreille in the scenic Idaho Panhandle. About one minute later, the sun would dip below the horizon. In another dozen miles, this train would finally reach the end of Montana Rail Link trackage in Sandpoint.

April 2030, after information that has been intercepted by the crushed Warsaw Pact about the weak points of DARKWATER's defense around New York City and the massive planning that followed, the attack may commence. Platoons of EU soldiers infiltrate and squeeze through the cracks in the defense system. The most efficient way to infiltrate was to move through towering crates and harbor ships to attack the grand city.

Wolf-Rayet stars are known to be efficient dust producers, and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope shows this to great effect. Cooler cosmic dust glows at the longer mid-infrared wavelengths, displaying the structure of WR 124’s nebula. The 10 light-years-wide nebula is made of material cast off from the ageing star in random ejections, and from dust produced in the ensuing turbulence. This brilliant stage of mass loss precedes the star’s eventual supernova, when nuclear fusion in its core stops and the pressure of gravity causes it to collapse in on itself, and then explode. As MIRI demonstrates here, Webb will help astronomers to explore questions that were previously only available to theory, questions like how much dust stars like this create before exploding in a supernova, and how much of that dust is large enough to survive the blast and go on to serve as a building block of future stars and planets.

In this image red is assigned to wavelengths of 12.8 and 18 microns (F1280W, F1800W), green to 11.3 microns (F1130W), and blue to 7.7 microns (F770W).

[Image Description: A large, bright cloud of yellow, pink, and purple surrounds a white star that looks like a tiny snowflake. A few small blue background stars are visible. Dark gaps break up the cloud, and small bright areas on the upper and lower left appear like schools of tadpoles swimming toward the central star. There are areas where clumps of bright hot material are being blown outward by the star, like hair streaming out behind someone standing in front of a fan.]

After the efficient train to Groningen I rented a bike to cycle out to friends in the south of the city. But before my visit I stopped at the lovely gardens of the DUO-complex (see my earlier posting www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/25990331244/in/photoli... ).

This is what I saw.

Here's a Narcissus Bulb Fly, Merodon equestris, on a pretty Daisy; I'm most grateful to Thijs de Graaf for his identification, astutely pointing out the vein forms of its wings (see below)! The name 'Merodon' is for the 'tooth-like' (=-odon) thickened structure on its hind femur (=méros). You can see it clearly in this photo. Our Hoverfly is often mistaken for a Bumblebee, but it does resemble those Hairy Flyers. These Lovely Insects are rather difficult to photograph with my humble camera because they're so very black. But the light between the rain showers was just right and delivered up this result.

Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana is a high-speed railway station located in Reggio Emilia, Italy.Designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the station features a striking modern design with a sweeping roof that mimics the shape of a wav.

It serves as a major transportation hub for the region, connecting it to cities like Milan, Bologna, and Florence. The station features modern architecture and amenities, making it a convenient and efficient stop for travelers in Italy.

The Regent Park Aquatic Centre (2012) in Toronto, designed by MJM architects, was “conceived as a transparent pavilion in the park”. The modern design is predominantly black and white, with cedar paneling and translucent blue accents. The facility is energy efficient, the pool itself is wheelchair accessible, drop-in swims are free and yes, there is a Tarzan rope.

The first barn find with solar panels on the roof.

One swift and very efficient tern, eyes its meal from 20-25feet above the water then dives with incredible speed and spectacular precision to catch her food. I saw (and photographed) once, one tern with a small snake (35-40cm) in her beak. She couldn't land somewhere to eat it as seagulls were chasing her for it. So she swallowed the whole "thing" within 20 seconds of flight. They are just a(nother) wonder, to watch.

While less efficient and reliable than rovers and walkers, Hover Scooters were ideal for rougher terrain, and were invaluable for making short, quick trips between the isolated outposts and surface stations that were scattered amongst the vast plains and vistas of foreign worlds.

Have been very productive this last month what with being trapped indoors, and having most of my work cancelled. The weather has been glorious though, so while I wait for an overcast day to photograph my new models I thought I would post an older one that never made it!

All my chores up here are done. Is there anything else I can help with?

Environmental awareness causes millions worldwide to use energy efficient light bulbs, which are up to 80% more efficient than standard bulbs and yet produce the same amount of light.

Wouldn't it be great though if we could all use light bulbs which are not only energy efficient but don't even need to be plugged in to light up our lives. Now that really would produce a revolution in energy efficiency! But until that time using energy efficient light bulbs helps reduce our personal impact upon the environment.

This image was done at the same time as Exploded View.

Having an energy saving lamp glowing, without being plugged in to a power source is a surreal sight. This is another image which I enjoyed producing, although it is somewhat different from my normal colourful style...

Project: Space Bus

Designed to be extremely efficient, the Space Bus runs completely on solar power and has everything its occupants need.

The ship splits into 3 modules- The Control Center, the Main Cabin, and the Science Section. When flying, the wheels are flipped upwards to provide more thrust and stabilize the "bus". (Photo 2) When landing the wheels are down.

The Space Bus is supplied with a crew of 2 and Minnie, a small Red-Planet Rover.

When Mars is reached, the stored seeds will be planted, in preparation for the next generation of space travelers!

I hope you enjoy this build!

Thank you!
