The Evolution of Net Zero
www.greenenergyfutures.ca/episode/net-zero-evolution-star...
We had a trip to Prague in January – for Jayne’s birthday - we don’t buy Christmas or birthday presents, we travel instead. We left snowy England for a very, very dull and grey Czech Republic. Yet again I was on a photographic downer looking at the weather forecast, grey is the colour that haunts me. Fortunately it was dull grey and not burnt highlight inducing bright grey. With the grey sky acting like a big diffuser I was going to have deep shadow and contrast to deal with. We had three very short spells of broken cloud which gave us a bit of sun and colour, which I managed to more or less anticipate so we managed to be in decent locations every time – generally somewhere high.
We had been upgraded to a five star hotel, apparently our original choice was flooded. We got compensation and five star hotel upgrade– a first for me. The Art Nouveau Palace has a beautiful interior, with beautiful rooms, the breakfast room was fantastic, as was the breakfast it has to be said. We were able to have an early breakfast so were out on foot just after eight. It was very cold – and dull! We spent the whole week well wrapped up. It drizzled for a day, but never really wet us, it snowed for a day, again we didn’t get wet and the snow didn’t settle. We walked 65 mile, spending plenty of time checking buildings and their interiors out – and coffee shop and bar interiors it has to be said. Although it was dull and sometimes wet I decided that the Camera was staying in my hands for the whole trip. Whenever I put it in my backpack for one reason or another I regret it.
Again, I didn’t look at any photographs of Prague before we got there, I like to just walk and discover, with the DK guidebook in my pocket (which is full of photos it has to be said). We like to get off the beaten track and see the grittier side of the places we visit – within reason! Prague has an incredible tram network, over 1000 trams – with many of them Tatra Eastern Bloc machines. The system seems chaotic but in reality it is incredible with one of the largest networks and highest usages in the world. The trams and cars frequently share the same road space with very little in the way of drama, none of the inexplicable and pathetic constant horn blowing one finds in many countries. Once it became apparent that buildings with a grey blanket as a background were going to be a bit un-inspirational I decided that the trams would be a good focal point instead. Where I have photographed one of the older trams against a background without clues it is easy to imagine that the photos were taken fifty years ago.
The train network also provided photo opportunities. The rolling stock ranges from old Eastern Bloc to very modern double decker’s and pendolinos. There are three stations although we visited the main station and Smichov. The main station interior is art deco and has been renovated by a private company. The exterior and the platforms are very rundown with a grim eastern bloc 1950’s feel –but it works! We discovered to our amusement that we could just walk across multiple lines, no health and safety, just keep your eyes open and don’t walk under a train – you’ll make a mess. Smichov station was grim, it didn’t help that it snowed all day and was grey and bitter. We felt like we were in a 50’s film set in Russia, broken concrete platforms and dereliction. With both stations there was another world underneath them. The underground Metro is running seamlessly and efficiently away beneath your feet. I didn’t have any problems taking photos anywhere but I was very open and obviously a tourist, I didn’t act covertly or suspiciously. There was only one occasion I was stopped and that was in a shopping centre – full of CCTV cameras filming everyone else!
We discovered old and beautiful- and very large- shopping centres hidden away in quite a few places. Brass framed windows and doors, shops thriving, there was a massive camera shop with thousands of second hand cameras, too much to look at. Many of the landmark buildings prevent photography, some make a small charge, some encourage it, the DK guide book gives a good indication regarding camera use. Nothing stops many people though, they just shoot away regardless, usually wanting a picture that includes their self. Prague is surrounded by low hills and has a fair few towers that you can pay a few pounds to go up, so viewpoints are plentiful. I think we visited most of them. I read about the Zizkov Tower, which looks like a Soviet rocket on the horizon and we headed straight for it - after crossing the rail lines! Set in a quiet residential area, there wasn’t a soul about. Two beautiful girls on reception and we parted with a few pounds, into the lift and were on the observation deck with no one else up there. There are fantastic views over the city, but! It is through two layers of not very clean glass so you go for the view rather than sharp panoramas. Still a fascinating place, with a nice café bar and very clean toilets – there are toilets everywhere, usually manned with a fee. Places are well staffed compared with home were three students are supposed to run a 20 screen multiplex cinema.
Graffiti was prominent, no matter how grand the monument, some moron would have daubed it. How do they get away with it in a 24 hour city centre with a strong police presence? The place is very clean, constantly being swept. What did surprise me, was that many buildings, that looked grand and built of stone, from a distance, were actually rendered with very low quality brickwork concealed. When restored the building look very impressive, others are missing the outer render from ground level to a fair height.
I need to cut this short really, I like to put a background story to the photos and although it would be better to individualise it to a specific photo or group of photos I don’t have the time to do that. I do try to give specific detail in the title bar after I have uploaded, this is time consuming enough although I’m pretty proficient at it by now. There are many things I would like to write that should be of interest to anyone thinking of going to Prague but I’ll have to let the pictures do the talking. As usual I am unlikely to be selective enough with my uploads, I’m not very good at leaving photos out so I just upload and be damned.
Three weeks ago, I spent some time being shown around St Anne’s by a justly proud principal, Mary Cullen. I was more than a little envious as I viewed a beautifully maintained and very well equipped school. What pupils, staff, and parents now take for granted, is in stark contrast to the humble beginnings experienced by those of us who were here 40 years ago.
St Anne’s opened for business on the 1st July 1978 with ninety children. Three classes of junior infants in St Marks Senior Primary school. Our second year we lodged in St Marks Community school where Tom Cuskelly. and J. Fitzpatrick and many other teachers joined my staff. At last, on the 1st September 1980 we moved into our permanent home, St Anne’s School, and the school divided. I remained principal of the junior school and Tom Cuskelly was appointed principal of the senior school.
Life was not easy for the many families that came to Fettercairn. There were no amenities, no shops, and no bus services. The Luas was not even dreamt of. The school had only basic necessities and no money to equip it as we would have wished. There was no fence around the school and Mr. C was seen on occasions chasing horses off the grassy hills surrounding the school.
Soon things gradually improved. The occasional cake sale provided much needed funds to buy equipment. We were very lucky to have a gifted and conscientious caretaker, Matt Murphy, who maintained the school on a shoestring and without whom the school would have come to a standstill. Indeed some naughty teachers grumbled that unlike some other schools that closed for a day or two because of boiler break downs, it never happened in St. Anne’s because Matt Murphy always kept the boiler going.
We also appointed a highly efficient secretary, whose work was impeccable and whose discretion was valued by all. Then came Board of Managements which involved, quite rightly, parents in the running of the schools. In St. Anne’s parental involvement was further encouraged by the appointment of a home school liaison teacher and the establishment of a parent’s room within the school. Here I must pay tribute to W. Mc G who did Trojan work in this area and also great things were achieved in St. Anne’s down the years. Thanks to very enthusiastic, progressive and dedicated staff in both schools. There was great teamwork in each school and we were constantly striving to improve the quality of our teaching and the learning environment of the children entrusted to us.
We were particularly interested getting help for children who might have problems. In this we were helped by supportive Boards of Managements and by the very caring parents of Fettercairn. There was great cooperation between the junior and senior schools, especially when it came to the transfer of pupils and arranging school events. When necessary, we also liaised with other schools in the area. I should like now to pay tribute to my fellow with whom it was great to work with and consult when necessary.
Of course, the most important members of the school community are the children who are the reason that we are here at all. We were always very proud of St. Anne’s children and we were confident that we could bring them anywhere and that they were guaranteed to be very well behaved. That doesn’t mean that they were all saints – we wouldn’t want them to be – but they just seemed to sense when good behaviour was required – a tribute to their parents. It gives all a great feeling of satisfaction to know that many have done very well at both secondary and third level education.
And so St. Anne’s has come full circle and is now, as it began, just one school under the very able stewardship of Mary Cullen. I have no doubt that with Mary Cullen at the helm, it will go from strength to strength, while still retaining its happy and pleasant atmosphere and its sense of fun which sustained us all down through the years. I look forward to hearing of even greater achievements by our pupils in the years to come.

In the mountains just mauka of the heart of Kona Town you find nestled a small arts community called Holualoa…There’s not much to Holualoa, a blink of the eye your past it driving by the Pink Kona Hotel built in 1926 (http://www.city-data.com/picfilesc/picc5136.php), or our small post office saying Aloha to Joy or Tom the Post Master…or quite simply going to the old movie theater on Saturday night for free. And let’s not forget our excellent Holualoa Elementary School built in 1897…this is “our” little piece of heaven away from the hustle and bustle of the world’s problems.
Hualalai Farms is a gated community with mostly 5 acre parcels of world famous “Kona Coffee”. And it is good! We’re an old community by most standards up here with a fine group of quiet folks that enjoy the peaceful life of gentlemen farmers, waving to one another as we pass on the road.
My journey led me here in 1989, but it’s time to move on to a new adventure, and my little piece of solitude is available for sale. I moved into this house which I built for my family in February of 2009. For all intents and purposes it’s new. I haven’t ripped out the old Ohia trees with their beautiful Lahua Blossoms. I enjoy the privacy, and watching the sun rise over Mauna Loa in the mornings, and the cruise ships passing by below.
I designed this home and property to be efficient with low maintenance, but additional growth or changes are easy to do. If you think you’d be interested in my slice of the world then by all means email me. I’d be more than happy to call you if you forward your telephone number. Tested Fuji X Pro 1 today at my supplier Mattssons. Here is my test result. Which isn't a test at all.
Not for me: The only reasons I have is that I have a monetary and emotional investment in old F and newer M-mount lenses. and X Pro 1 does not provide an efficient way to focus manual lenses using focus assist of some kind. The way it is done in Sony and Ricoh cameras and (I believe) some Canon video camcorders.
It felt solid in my hands, but very light in comparison with my GXR M. But I guess that was more due to my Zeiss Biogon than my Ricoh body.

Hinged roof rafters allow the roof to be transported at a lower height on roadways. The energy efficient manufactured home stands ready for dry walling at Stardust Industries on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. They are helping retool and redirect Kentucky’s houseboat manufacturing industry – which has been decimated because of the struggling economy – by using its facilities and manpower to create low-cost housing that is energy efficient. Rural Development obligated $499,000 in Rural Business Enterprise Grant funds to support this unique endeavor. Up until a few years ago, there were several successful houseboat manufacturers in the four-county area surrounding the city of Somerset. Most have now ceased operation or drastically reduced output, which has led to dramatic, long-term job loss. These new energy efficient homes will be constructed in redesigned, refitted houseboat factories using local workers that have been retrained. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung

The new barracks include a full kitchen, stocked with two four-piece place settings donated by the Fort Hood Red Cross. Counter seating can accommodate wheelchairs. Pictured is WTB Soldier, Sgt. Eric Lusebrink.
Fort Hood’s new Warrior Transition Brigade Complex is a $62 million, 15-acre campus that includes a 30,137 square-foot battalion headquarters, a 15,000 square-foot company headquarters, a 192,000 square-foot 320-person barracks and a 15,000 square-foot Soldiers and Family Assistance Center that includes child-care facilities and a modern playground. The new facility, which held a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 6, improves care for wounded, injured and ill Soldiers and their Families because services are now centrally located and within walking distance. The new WTB campus allows WTB Soldiers to work, train and socialize as a group to create tighter bonds that have proven to be helpful in a Soldier’s healing.
The new barracks, which can house up to 320 Soldiers, include a selection of ADA-compliant rooms with roll-in showers, kitchen counters and desks to accommodate wheel chairs and wheelchair-accessible washer and dryers. Handrails are installed throughout hallways as well as in all private bathrooms.
All four buildings are eco friendly with design solutions that conserve energy, water efficient and self-sustainable. The buildings have solar panels that provide about 30% of energy used to heat hot water as well as standing seam metal roofs that lower the buildings' solar reflectivity index, which reduces heat and cooling costs. Other energy efficiency enhancements include motion sensing lights, high-efficiency window systems and non-water using urinals that use a biodegradable liquid for sanitary and odor free environment and dual flush toilets will save up to 30 gallons of water. The WT Operations building is LEED Silver Level certified.
Landscaping considerations include using native trees and grass that are grouped together by similar watering needs and selected for their hardiness, availability and drought tolerance.
The WT complex, by using durable finishes and efficient systems, is designed for a 25-year life span before renovation. It has an estimated 50-year life span with renovations.
Highly energy-efficient home meeting LEED standards.

Private 5 acre estate with efficient custom home – For Sale By Owner: $998,000
If you have SKYPE on your computer we can even walk around the house and property.

This is a photograph from the Clane and Rathcoffey Parishes annual 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Clane village, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 19th of October at 14:30. This year's event follows on from the very successful staging last year (see link to photographs below). The organisers offer both a 5km and 10km race and the event provides an opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in the event. The 5KM has a particular emphasis on family entrants. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the Village as both races started and finished on the main street outside the parish hall. The directly out-and-back routes provided an opportunity for a fast time on a good course and made for a great finish line atmosphere as runners, joggers, and walkers crossed the line. Great praise must be extended to the whole organising committee who organised a very efficiently run event. The events provide some runners with an opportunity to have a final race effort session in the week leading up to the Dublin City Marathon.
Event Management and Electronic Timing was provided by Irish company Precision Timing. Their website is here with links to results from the race www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer
This photograph is part of a larger set of photographs taken at today's event. Photographs were taken at the start, 400 meters gone, 400 meters to go, 1km gone, and at the 9KM/4KM mark. The URL of the full set of photographs is www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157636717081724/

Overall Race Summary and Logistics
Participants: There were about 200 competitors combined in the two events.
Weather: The weather was very changeable for all of the events. During the 10KM race there was a heavy rain shower around the area of the 6KM mark but this didn't actually fall in the town. There was a strong headwind against competitors in the 10KM on the return part of the course between 6KM and 8KM.
Race Course:
This summary includes information on both the 5KM and 10KM races.
Both races start in the same place - just outside the Race HQ on the main street of the town. The races then proceed north eastwards out the Dublin Road towards Straffan and Celbridge. Just after 400 meters the races take a left up a small local road and proceeds along this road until it takes a tight left hand turn at the end of the lane at Capdoo goo.gl/maps/aPo26 (Google Streetview). The route proceeds until it shortly meets the Clane-Kilcock Road - College Road R407 goo.gl/maps/SGcPa. Both races will divert into Clane Business and Industrial Park goo.gl/maps/EQMf0 . The 5KM turns around and returns on the same route to the finish. However the 10KM race continues (taking a left) back onto College Road. Soon afterwards it passes the famous entrance to Clongowes Wood College on the right the race takes the next left (goo.gl/maps/zUhrJ) and brings runners onto the road known locally as the 'Long Road' (R408 Between Rathcoffey and Prosperous) at this point goo.gl/maps/fHKr2. The race proceeds northward until runners meet the Clane Kilcock Road once again. With the exception of the partial run into the Industrial Estate the race returns to the finish on the main street in Clane via the same route as the outward part of the route.
Location Map:
Clane Parish Hall (Race HQ) goo.gl/maps/MgakJ
Start and Finish Location of both races goo.gl/maps/0wiZp
Refreshments:
There was a really wonderful array of refreshments provided in the parish hall after the race for all participants.

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account?
Yes - of course you can. Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.
How can I get full resolution copies of these photographs?
To prevent missue of these photographs there is a watermark embedded into the images. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution without the watermark. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.
This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.
Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.
In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.
If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?
Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
