I make this image public in the AVIF format (can be opened in the latest IrfanView, Chrome and Firefox): Link to AVIF in Google Drive

The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.

Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.

The AVIF is after the conversion always a little more saturated and the contrast seems to be higher. If this is a common thin with AVIF or just one of this certain encoder implementation (used in GIMP).

The uploaded JPEG is about 17MB in size, the AVIF 1.9MB.

This sample is generated using the avifenc.exe command line encoder for windows.

I used this parameters:

avifenc.exe --cicp 2/2/1 -r limited -y 420 -j 6 --min 30 --max 40 --minalpha 30 --maxalpha 40 in.png out.avif

The result is:

- 6 threads used (for my 6 CPU cores)

- to colorspace YUV420 (422 and 444 is not supported by the Windows AV1 extension)

- 12 bit per channel

These are some of my father's WWII service medals. The one that I focused on is his good conduct medal which reads, "fidelity efficiency honor." My father was a Maltese immigrant who gained U.S. citizenship by serving in the army. The medals are made of bronze.

The flight of a dragonfly showcases incredible agility and precision. Dragonflies are highly effective predators, with success rates between 95% to 99% when hunting. This remarkable hunting efficiency is due to their agile flight, excellent vision, and quick reflexes, allowing them to catch prey like mosquitoes, flies, and other small insects.

As far as I can tell, sea otters have a well-refined process for eating crabs: (1) eat the legs first, so it can't run away (2) snap off and eat the claws second, so they won't pinch your face (3) pop off the carapace to eat all the insides and (4) rinse and repeat with new crabs until naptime. Rocky Reach is nationally recognized for efforts to protect the environment. A first-of-its-kind juvenile fish bypass system was completed in 2003 to help young salmon and steelhead on their way to the ocean. A major powerhouse upgrade started in 1995 includes new turbines that are more fish friendly. Improvements to turbines and generators are also designed to improve efficiency and reliability.

In an effort to improve fuel efficiency, NASA and the aircraft industry are rethinking aircraft design. Inside the 8’ x 6’ wind tunnel at NASA Glenn, engineers recently tested a fan and inlet design, commonly called a propulsor, which could use four to eight percent less fuel than today’s advanced aircraft.

The new propulsor is designed to be embedded in the aircraft’s body, where it would ingest the slower flowing air that normally develops along an aircraft’s surface, called boundary layer, and use it to help propel the aircraft.

The tests showed that the new fan and inlet design could withstand the turbulent boundary layer airflow and increase efficiency. Results of the tests can be applied to cutting-edge aircraft designs that NASA and its partners are pursuing.

I know a seasoned artist who would like to have a shirt like this. She has been challenged on the price of her portraits. Her response is "You are also paying for the 40 years it takes to get this good." I can understand the point.

Given the number of these floating around my yard, I don't even want to consider what the dandelion population in my grass will be next year!

The really wonderful version of this subject is over in Cerstin's stream.

The efficiency of 'bailing hay' has increased dramatically. In previous times the hay was cut, then raked into rows for 'curing' [drying by the sun] then 'bailed' into about 80 lb bales. These were then stored in a barn to keep them dry. Those were lifted by those who labored on farms--hard and hot work. Modern and huge round bales weigh a lot. I've heard as much a 1,000 to 1,500 pounds each.

They are wrapped with plastic to reduce 'weathering' and stored outdoors. This eliminated the burning down of a storage barn by a 'spontaneous combustion' fire.

The modern steps includes mowing, and at the same time 'win-rowing' the grass which is then bailed by a second machine; there is no waiting for 'curing' in the modern method.

I love collections, don't you?

“Following Val and Tavo’s reassignment to a different unit, Rook and I started afresh. The best and brightest from the 212th got assigned to us. Professional, devastatingly lethal and much too light-hearted, these boys look like a good bunch of soldiers. Let’s hope I can keep them alive.”

“C Squad established itself throughout a string of campaigns as one of the best and most efficient squads in the entire galactic theatre of war. It was decided that the two veteran troopers of the unit would be promoted to lead their own squadron in 2nd Regiment, leaving ARC-53 and his protege to train a fire team from the 212th as replacements. These troopers were the most promising in their entire unit and were put forth personally by Commander Cody as candidates for ARC trooper training.

They have the best marksmanship and physical combat scores across their whole division, and the highest confirmed kill count from three consecutive campaigns. Together with ARC-53 and CT-8/991-02’s reputation for brutal efficiency, I almost feel sorry for the poor enemy that they’re unleashed on.”

Kingsburg, Ca.

Friday evening, as if on cue for the Labor Day Weekend, several fires have broken out within 60 miles of Kingsburg in the Sierras. Our air quality is crappy on a normal basis. Then the numerous fires started by lightening in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz and Monterey areas, brought more smoke and particulates to our valley. The Monterey fires started when we were over there for five days trying to get away and hoping for cooler temperatures and better air quality. That didn't work out (except for the cooler air part).

Back home we watch as a small fire starting Friday night grows to consume huge amounts of Sierra forests. Areas that were packed with Labor Day weekend campers, boaters, hikers and whatever, were shut down and evacuated. More ash and particulates now pouring into the valley.

Each morning when I wake up, I have an internal debate about whether I'm better off not to go for a walk and become more sedentary, or go for a walk and breathe in all manner of toxins. Some days I go, some not. This morning I was up at 4:30 A.M., and out the door around five. As I backed the car out of the driveway, I realized I forgot my hat, so stopped and went inside to get one. As I passed the headlights, I could see lots of small particles of smoke, ash, or whatever, dancing around. Needless to say, I didn't have much trouble imagining that stuff lodging itself deep into my breathing apparati. Deflated, I drove to the donut shop and got a cup of coffee and two donuts to soothe my feelings of hopelessness. And, what better way to lift your spirits than a sugar and caffeine high? I then went to the place where I usually park the car and commence the walk, but today, I sat there in darkness eating my donuts, drinking the coffee, and listening to the news on NPR.

After that, I chose to cruise in the hopes that I might find an image for my camera as the sunrise appeared. Nothing found. Just as I was giving up and headed home, I did see this. Seemed kind of fitting for the day.

Recently repainted 4807 trundles through Canterbury in Sydney's Inner West on an ARHS ACT transfer run returning 3801 Limited's Water Gin to Eveleigh.

Efficiency is all the rage these days. Here, KLM 282, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, heads out via Mike 2 for Spot 2, bound for Amsterdam, while Cathay 892 and Asiana 212, Airbus A350-900s in from Hong Kong and Incheon, respectively, hold on the Mike 1 line.

A Plaxton "President" bodied Dennis Trident rests in the lanes at Lillyhall in the sort of weather that it will be hoping to make the most of this Summer.

X702JVV was new in 2000 to Cambus. In May 2014, whilst being driven "out of service", it was decapitated by a low bridge in Kempston whilst operating for Stagecoach Bedford.

Lillyhall is the one-stop shop for open-top conversions, both planned & unplanned, so it was no surprise that it arrived here.

It has been converted over the last few months and has just returned from Carlisle's Willowholme depot where it has received a full repaint into "Lakeland" livery.

It now awaits final fitting out of the interior before being redeployed elsewhere.
