Hepatitis B Foundation Sponsors May First Friday Doylestown

The Hepatitis B Foundation sponsored the May 2, 2008 First Friday Doylestown in support of National Hepatitis Awareness Month for a third year.
The Foundation’s role in First Friday was to educate local community leaders, educators, business owners and residents that one in 20 individuals in the U.S. has been affected by hepatitis B. That means someone you know and love has been touched by the deadly virus. Hepatitis B Foundation staff and volunteers were on hand to speak to members of the public about their work. The Foundation tent featured Michelle Grossman NBC 10 Weather Plus Meteorologist; local singer/songwriters Christy Jefferson & Band and The Waltons; O’Liver, the Hepatitis B Foundation’s mascot; a display of Cold Spring Elementary School students’ artwork; hepatitis B literature for adults and youth and much more.
For the Foundation, First Friday Doylestown is an evening to educate the public and celebrate the arts. Doylestown establishments stayed open late to exhibit artwork from local artists and to enjoy the sounds of local musicians.

The Hepatitis B Foundation is the only national nonprofit organization solely dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected with hepatitis B worldwide through research, education and patient advocacy. About First Friday Doylestown: First Friday Doylestown was designed to generate excitement for visiting historic Doylestown, build a greater sense of community and foster a better appreciation for local artists and musicians. Each participating venue will display a First Friday Doylestown flag outside their shops, restaurants or business so that visitors know they are open for business and entertainment. Just follow the yellow-and-black flags around town to discover a new side of Doylestown!
Cheever Burton graduated from the Michigan State Normal School in 1883 and joined the faculty of the Physical Education Department in 1895. Married to Louis L. Burton, Cheever Burton died in 1935.

The annual Retiree Reception was held at 4:00 pm April 25 at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts on Patterson Street. VLREA invited all teachers at the public schools in Valdosta, Lowndes and Echols counties and educators at VSU, GMC and Wiregrass. The reception is held to honor each of the local public educators who are retiring at the end of the school year or those who have retired during the present school year. The reception for retirees has been held since the early 1990s.

Nearly 200 students and educators gathered in Des Moines on Friday, September 29 for the first-ever Youth Diversity and Inclusion Summit. It was a day of discussion, training and planning aimed at raising consciousness and fostering understanding. Ames, Ankeny Centennial, Johnson, Marshalltown, Southeast Polk, Urbandale, and West Des Moines joined the five DMPS comprehensive high schools – East, Hoover, Lincoln, North and Roosevelt – as participants in the event.

Buell was born in 1874 and graduated form the Michigan State Normal School in 1893 and joined the History faculty in 1899. She retired in 1937 and died in 1951. Buell Hall is named for her.
Mary Walsh is the Concordia educator who looks after the men and women who volunteer from the West Montreal Readaptation Centre. In the basement of the Hall building, where the blue bins are brought after being collected by the men, she says the men find it hard to deal with the amount of garbage they find in the blue bins. "It's so discouraging for the guys when they open up the bins and there's a lot of stuff in there that shouldn't be in there in the first place. If I can just get people to stop putting coffee cups in the recycling, I'd be happy."

Description: Educator and founder of the Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, North Carolina, Charlotte Eugenia Hawkins Brown was active in the National Council of Negro Women, the N.C. Teachers Association, etc., and was the first black woman to serve on the national board of the YWCA. She lectured and wrote about black women, education, and race relations.
