Former Celtic Dana Barros, Boston Mamas blogger Christine Koh and Kiss 108 radio personality Billy Costa were educators for a day at the Parlin School in Everett on Nov. 21, 2013. The honorary position gives community members a chance to become involved in American Education Week and to see the opportunities and challenges in public schools.
EDUCATOR CONVENTION - Recently attending the Delta Kappa Gamma International convention in Spokane, Wash., were Jacquetta Graves, Henrietta; Dianne Radcliffe and Johnnie McGraw, Runaway Bay; Carol Donovan, Dee Ann Archer and Lou Hitt, Decatur; Leah Matzinger, Lake Bridgeport and Rachel Gasperson, Bridgeport. All are members of Gamma Epsilon, the local chapter of DKG, a society for Key Women Educators. Educators from 17 countries and all 50 states attended the convention.
The annual Retiree Reception was held at 4:00 pm April 25 at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts on Patterson Street. VLREA invited all teachers at the public schools in Valdosta, Lowndes and Echols counties and educators at VSU, GMC and Wiregrass. The reception is held to honor each of the local public educators who are retiring at the end of the school year or those who have retired during the present school year. The reception for retirees has been held since the early 1990s.
Educators Terry Kaldhusdal of the Kettle Moraine School District and Stephanie Schneider and Kathy Xiong of Milwaukee brought their concerns to the Senate and Assembly education committees, telling lawmakers that all schools should be held to the same standards and new legislation proposing education reforms is short on details.
