Four Iowa educators have been named state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The two math finalists are:
•Zac Christensen, a second-grade teacher at Perkins Elementary School, Des Moines Public Schools
•Natalie Franke, a second-grade teacher at Brookview Elementary School, Waukee Community School District
The two science finalists are:
•Lisa Chizek, a fifth- and sixth-grade science teacher at North Tama Elementary, North Tama County Community School District
an instructional coach at Jefferson Elementary, Mason City Community School District
In recognition of their exemplary roles as educators, Baldwin Wallace recently honored Drs. Barbara (Mueller) Sawrey ’73 and Thea (McAfee) Wilson ’75 as Outstanding Educators and celebrated Dorin Jackson ’10 and Sarah Piscsalko ’13 as Jill Herrick Graduate Education Scholarship recipients. The four individuals were lauded March 25 at the 2018 Celebration of Outstanding Educators.

James Hause graduated from the University of Michigan and joined the Department of Music in 1971 where he served as Department Head until his retirement in 1994.

Cheever Burton graduated from the Michigan State Normal School in 1883 and joined the faculty of the Physical Education Department in 1895. Married to Louis L. Burton, Cheever Burton died in 1935.
James B. Campbell was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 1, 1930 and served as the Vice President for Student Affairs from 1970-1975. He died December 22, 1984 in Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 54.

The annual Retiree Reception was held at 4:00 pm April 25 at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts on Patterson Street. VLREA invited all teachers at the public schools in Valdosta, Lowndes and Echols counties and educators at VSU, GMC and Wiregrass. The reception is held to honor each of the local public educators who are retiring at the end of the school year or those who have retired during the present school year. The reception for retirees has been held since the early 1990s.
Fennell was born in 1923 and joined the faculty at EMU in 1970 as a professor of Biology. He served at the Head of the Department and retired in 1993.
