The full view of the falls the dog was playing in from yesterday's photo. This is about a 15' drop over the falls, so you can see why I hoped he wouldn't fall in!
Hooker Falls has been known for years to local residents and was named for Edmund Hooker, who operated a mill below the falls in the late 1800s. At the time, it was named Mill Shoals Falls. These falls were seen in the movie Last of the Mohicans as the falls the characters go over in canoes.

DuPont State Recreational Forest is a 10,000 acre tract, located in Henderson and Transylvania counties of North Carolina. The name originates from the fact that the DuPont company arranged the sale of the original tract to the state. Adjacent tracts have since been purchased and added to the state forest. Portions of the forest formerly contained a manufacturing facility for the production of X-ray film. The forest was used to shoot scenes from the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans as well as the 2012 box office hit The Hunger Games.
Nearly 100 miles of multi-use trails and roads thread through the forest. The forest is widely used for many recreational activities, including mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, swimming (where permitted), wading, and kayaking. Destinations include mountaintop views (such as Cedar Rock Mountain), lakes (such as Lake Imaging, Lake Julia, Lake Dense, and Fawn Lake), and waterfalls, including: Bridal Veil Falls, Grassy Creek Falls, High Falls, Hooker Falls, Triple Falls & Wintergreen Falls.
in between rain showers i was treated to some super soft light and nice atmospheric conditions in DuPont State Forest, NC.
this shot is from Big Rock trail, which is a popular mountain biking loop.
thanks for looking!

Day trip to look for Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids in nearby, DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Although we were just a bit late for the best of the Large Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids, we did find a few that were still holding on. We had much better luck with the Small Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids. We also made a side trip for Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid, and we found a few pretty good ones.

Another nice little waterfall to hike to in Du Pont State Forest is Wintergreen Falls. Easy hike along mostly old forest roads to get to it. Didn't see another person until on our way out then a couple school busloads of kids near the parking area. Good to see them getting out and away from "technology"....
The Little River drops over many falls of the DuPont State Forest in Transylvania County, near Brevard, North Carolina. This particular series of drops is known as Triple Falls… that means if you slip from the top of the falls, you’ll be tenderized three times by the moment you hit bottom. Some years ago, when I was involved with Camp Cherith, I met with the rest of the board at DuPont (before it became a state forest) to look into purchasing land for a camp site for a boys’ and girls’ summer camp. The land was beautiful, though there wasn’t enough level area there for what we needed… that really says something for the place. While I was there, I was given permission to traipse the area and photograph the many waterfalls. I brought along some chest waders to venture out into the water to make tighter shots of the individual drops and riffles. I noticed as I eased out near the top of this falls that the bottom was getting slicker the further out I went, to the point that the water pressure started to slide me in the direction of the falls. Bear in mind that the water wasn't even quite up to my knees. Had I not brought a heavy Mamiya camera on a tripod, I would have had real trouble making it back to dry rock. I still get out in the water for better vantage points with the camera, but I’m a tad more careful about how I do it!
Of the many times I've shot this waterfall, this is the only time when the wind or terrible light didn't scourge me. I could have used a little more color on the far bank... did I just complain? This is the best shot I ever got of Triple Falls, so I'd better count my blessings and shut up while I'm ahead. I'm going to go look at your fall shots.
This is High Falls, in the DuPont State Forest, NC. If you look closely, you can see people on the rocks at the bottom of the falls. That should give you some sense of scale.

Triple Falls is one of the highlights of the Dupont State Forest in North Carolina. This picture was taken last autumn when accessibility to the falls was very good. Recently a fence has been erected which limits access to the falls, leaving a lot of disappointed hikers.

Hooker Falls

Featured in the film "Last Of The Mohicans."
Recently Flickr Friend and North Carolina resident Nate Montgomery stated that he thought Hooker Falls is the real jewel photographically compared to nearby Triple Falls and High Falls in DuPont State Forest, and I am going to have to agree with him, at least in comparison to Triple Falls, I've yet to see High Falls. Although Triple Falls is one of my all time favorite falls I've ever seen, it's difficult to get a really good photograph of it. There's something intimate about Hooker Falls, as stated by Nate, and on my second trip to this area I really understood what he was talking about. Just be sure you get there before the swimmers or go when it's cold out.
Week 29 of 52 in 2016. The theme is NATURE. On Saturday I visited three of the waterfalls at DuPont State Forest in Cedar Point, North Carolina and one waterfall in South Carolina. Hooker Falls is the smallest of the three waterfalls.

Continuing my story of our visit to DuPont State Forest in North Carolina with the North Georgia Photography Club…
After visiting Hooker Falls we came back down the path toward the parking area and crossed the footbridge over the Little River to follow Triple Falls Trail. A short walk along the river brings you to the falls.
There is an overlook where you can get a view of the whole of the 3 falls as the water cascades down a 120 foot drop. Even if you have never been here before, you may be familiar with the landscape of DuPont State Forest. Triple Falls along with , Hooker, High and Bridal Veil falls were featured in the movies: Last of the Mohicans (1992) and The Hunger Games (2012).
Just beyond the overlook, are stairs to descend to the base of the second falls where the water reaches a large flat, rocky plateau before taking the final plunge as it cuts through the Blue Ridge forest land. The plateau allows close access to the falls and provides some nice ponds that reflect the white water as it crashes against the stone.

Hooker falls is a 14 foot (3 meter) waterfall located in DuPont State Forest in North Carolina. It was featured in the 1992 film 'Last of the Mohicans'.
another image from Dupont State Forest in Transylvania County NC; this is a side shot of Hooker Falls.
this single RAW image really benefited by pulling in the highlights which allowed more contrast to be revealed in the cascade.
A perspective crop was also applied in CS5 as well as some dodging of the foreground flow.
thanks for looking!
