The start of fall foliage at Hooker Falls in Dupont State Forest. Dupont State Forest near Brevard NC has many waterfalls to enjoy, and is a popular destination for outdoor lovers. The waterfalls in this state park have been featured in many movies including The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans. This waterfall landscape was shot while leading my Autumn Landscapes workshop last weekend, as weather on the Blue Ridge Parkway forced us to adopt a plan B. Hope you enjoy it, faves and comments are appreciated! ;-)

Beautiful year 'round...but especially in the fall.
This is also seen in Waterfalls of the Carolinas.
This is the second encounter I have had with a Heron while visiting Triple Falls in Dupont State Forest. The first time it happened he was right at the base of Triple falls but unfortunately it was virtually dark outside and I didn't have the right lens on...there just wasn't enough light to capture anything good.
This time I was at the top of Triple falls when my wife noticed him again right at the base of the falls. I scrambled down to the base of the falls as fast as I could without breaking something but unfortunately he had already started moving down river. I was still excited to keep him in my sights and have enough light to get a good shot. I really wanted to capture him with a long exposure to get a sense of movement in the water. It took a lot of shots but my patience paid off. This isn't the shot I had envisioned but I still like it. I like that his body is still but his right leg is moving. There is always next time!

DuPont State Forest
North Carolina
When we arrived at the High Falls parking lot in North Carolina's DuPont State Forest I was hoping the sun had not elevated too far into the sky. As we made our approach on the trail the more concerned I got, not only because of the position of the sun but also because there wasn't a cloud to be seen. Well, when we got there I was both sad and happy. I was sad because I knew photographs from the base of the falls were completely out of the question, however the morning light was absolutely stunning as it backlit the trees in a beautiful golden glow. Would you believe this was taken in spring? The first time I visited this falls was a couple years ago when my good friend Jeff Burcher and I decided to head out in the rain from our nearby rental since I'd never seen it before and I was determined to finally get a photograph of it. We only shot it from this perspective and I got couple great shots that I liked, and unfortunately on this trip it was again the only perspective I got of the falls. I'm really looking forward to a return visit on a gloomy day, because I want to spend some quality time with this towering 100 ft tall beauty, and I'm sure it will take another twenty trips knowing my luck with the weather and North Carolina waterfalls, but I'll get it.
The Dupont State Forest contains some of the most pastoral woods in North Carolina. Though there are places with taller mountains and more "wild" trails, one cannot help but be enchanted by a walk in this still somewhat recently protected forest.
We stopped between the place we staying near the North and South Carolina border and our next place to stay near Asheville for a day of hiking in the DuPont State Forest. There are four waterfalls along the same trail. A great place for a half day hike.
Shot this a couple minutes after sunrise while driving to the DuPont State Forest in North Carolina. I can't wait to revisit this spot about 10 minutes earlier so I can catch the sun before it is this high in the sky. Having said that, this place was really magical and I'm really pleased with how the shots translated.

High Falls is located in Transylvania County on the Little River through the DuPont State Forest. It is between Hendersonville and Brevard North Carolina.
This image is the result of a 5 shot HDR sequence and then processed with Lightroom5, Photomatix5, and Nik Color Efex4.
12 Foot Waterfall in Dupont State Forest. 1/4 mile hike. I read that there is a paved trail for wheelchairs, etc., but I did not see it. Swimming is allowed in this area. Parker lot far to small for the numbers of people. We were there on a Friday.
Hooker Falls has been known for years to local residents and was named for Edmund Hooker, who operated a mill below the falls in the late 1800s. Hooker Falls flows on the Little River through the DuPont State Forest. It is one of 4 major waterfalls in the area. In the 1990s, DuPont Forest was sold to the State of North Carolina, and as DuPont has completed cleanup of various areas, those areas have been made open to the public.
The Falls can be seen in movies like Last of the Mohicans and the Hunger Games.

The workshop my brother Ted and I had with Randy Sanger (Randall Sanger Photography) in late April took us first to Hooker Falls; a side view of the falls from above was posted earlier (below). This was taken from river level below the falls, and shows the left side of the falls much more fully than the previous post. According to Kevin Adams (North Carolina Waterfalls, 3rd edition), Hooker Falls has a drop of about 14 feet and is at 2,220 feet elevation. He further relates that the waterfall once was called Mill Shoals, and that the current name is for Edmund Hooker, the late-19th-century operator of the mill located downstream.
