This a very nice cascade just south of Mill Shoals Falls on the North Fork of the French Broad River. It's listed as a cascade, but looks more like a beautiful small waterfall. This was onne of my top five falls I shot on my trip.
While in North Carolina we went to DuPont State Forest and hiked to three waterfalls. Hooker Falls was the first one we saw.

Just to give one a idea of the height of these falls.

Went up to Dupont state forest this weekend...only made it to two of the falls. This was the first stop - an easy 1/4 mile or so hike from the parking area.

This was my second visit to Hooker Falls this past autumn. I made sure I got there well before the sun rose over the falls this time....and before the crowds showed up.
There’s a point about midway on High Falls at DuPont State Forest where water converges from several points onto a rock that shoots a rooster tail plume out from the hydraulic. Part of that area was in sunlight while the rest was in shade, though reflecting the blue sky from varying angles. I thought it looked kind of artsy through the lens... this image is mostly that of water, yet it still has a great sense of depth and form.
The Carolina blue here reminds me... the University of North Carolina Tar Heels are playing the Michigan State University Spartans aboard the USS Carl Vinson for the first ever "Quicken Loans Carrier Classic" basketball game on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2011... ought to be a phenominal game, though I'd hate to be the one to shag after the balls that go over the side. UNC's ranked #1 in the nation in the preseason, which is never good in my opinion, as #1 preseason teams rarely go on to win the NCAA tournament. It also means the Spartans will enjoy being the first to take down a #1 team, especially UNC... they'll have something to prove. All I can say is "Go Heels!"
*Update*... Carolina wins 67-55.
Thank a veteran today for the peace and freedom we enjoy!
Day trip to look for Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids in nearby, DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Although we were just a bit late for the best of the Large Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids, we did find a few that were still holding on. We had much better luck with the Small Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids. We also made a side trip for Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid, and we found a few pretty good ones.

Visited Triple Falls a few years ago in the spring and wanted to return in the fall to capture it with some fall color. Wasn't disappointed.
