In preparation for a field trip to DuPont State Forest (Transylvania County, North Carolina) later in the week with some out-of-state friends, I decided to go up there to scout out the area, a bit. I ended up finding a good variety of wildflowers to photograph -- some of which had already finished blooming in South Carolina.
For a report on this field trip, please check out Jim's Blog.
Another nice little waterfall to hike to in Du Pont State Forest is Wintergreen Falls. Easy hike along mostly old forest roads to get to it. Didn't see another person until on our way out then a couple school busloads of kids near the parking area. Good to see them getting out and away from "technology"....

This section of cascades on the Little River in Dupont State Forest is one of my favorites to visit. It is a beautiful setting and something about the flow of the cascades really display nature's artistic abilities. It is also a favorite place of mine because it is very easy to access and there is never anyone else there, even on days when Dupont is crowded.

Rapids on Little River - & [Nearly] Hidden Photographer
DuPont State Recreational Forest
Transylvania County, North Carolina
Recently, Ted (my youngest brother) and I were in the mountains of Western North Carolina for some photography under the guidance of Randy Sanger (Randall Sanger Photography), with Pisgah Inn as our base, a location especially appreciated by Ruth Ann and Beth (Ted's wife), who stayed behind while we went out for photos. We had a great time, even though we got to fewer waterfalls than intended; cloud cover often turned out to be less than forecast, and one day we had very strong wind (severe weather warning-strong) and even some sleet, along with more sunshine than we wanted. Sunrise/sunset conditions were generally poor, as well, with either too much or too little cloud cover. We kicked things off with a visit to DuPont State Recreational Forest, where we photographed Hooker Falls and Triple Falls, both on the Little River. These rapids on Little River were between the two sets of falls. If viewed on a large enough screen, you can make out Ted behind the tree on the far left. Here, and at other locations visited last week, water flow was good -- sometimes perhaps a bit too strong; this was taken at just 1/6-second.

I don't like the vignette but my cheap sun thingy gets in my shots sometimes. What are you gonna do?
I took this on my first visit to Hooker Falls this autumn. The sun was just coming up over the falls, backlighting the fall foliage above the falls. I came back a few days later before the sun came up to get a few shots with more even lighting.
Autumn at Hooker Falls in Dupont State Park during the NC fall foliage of 2011. Hooker Falls is a wonderful small falls at this State Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina that is rich in waterfalls. Hope you enjoy it, feel free to comment, fave, share, etc ;-)

120 foot waterfall. The hike is along the stream and some beautiful photo ops along the way. One mile round trip hike with a very steep hill. They have a bit of crushed granite rock on the trails, but you could easily turn an ankle on them! Only one spot to capture image without lots of branches. Parking lot not nearly large enough for the number of visitors.

One of the falls I wanted to knock off my list to visit in the Brevard area was High Falls. Located in DuPont State Forest this enormous 100 + ft. tall cascade is on the Little River, I had been near this falls twice when I had visited the falls downstream but the first time I didn't know it was there and the second hard light discouraged the trek. I almost didn't make it this time as a steady all day rain had put a damper on our day and it was nearing dark but after some coaxing of my good friend Jeff Burcher, aka Von Shawn on Flickr, he decided he would go and we'd take the easy hike and not visit the base. Man, was it worth it, and thanks for driving Jeff!

Another shot of our rainy ride last week. This is Corn Mill Shoals in Dupont State Forest. You can see my bike resting on a rock up river. This is the Little River. My Grandfather had a company in the 19 teens that was called the Little River Land Company. He would also take people from Greenville SC and the Piedmont on horse and carriage tours of the waterfalls on the Little River. Hand held.
Triple Falls, located outside of Asheville, NC was photographed on an autumn morning. An aperture of f/22 was used with a low ISO to really allow movement of the water. A Canon 80D and a Canon 17-40 mm f/4L lens was used with a polarizer and two stop HDR to capture the wide dynamic range.
Wait, no dog. Why am I posting this photo? :p This is one of 4 waterfalls in the DuPont State Forest where we went hiking.
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
[John 7:37-39]
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
1. Like it or not, we are ALL sinners: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)
2. The punishment for sin is death: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. (Romans 5:12 NLT)
3. Jesus is our only hope: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NLT)
4. SALVATION is by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)
5. Accept Jesus and receive eternal life: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 NLT) And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NLT)
Read the Bible for yourself. Allow the Lord to speak to you through his Word. YOUR ETERNITY IS AT STAKE!
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
[Romans 5:1-5 NIV]

This was my second visit to Hooker Falls this past autumn. I made sure I got there well before the sun rose over the falls this time....and before the crowds showed up.
Two fall colors abstracts, all SOOC:

The start of fall foliage at Hooker Falls in Dupont State Forest. Dupont State Forest near Brevard NC has many waterfalls to enjoy, and is a popular destination for outdoor lovers. The waterfalls in this state park have been featured in many movies including The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans. This waterfall landscape was shot while leading my Autumn Landscapes workshop last weekend, as weather on the Blue Ridge Parkway forced us to adopt a plan B. Hope you enjoy it, faves and comments are appreciated! ;-)
