In preparation for a field trip to DuPont State Forest (Transylvania County, North Carolina) later in the week with some out-of-state friends, I decided to go up there to scout out the area, a bit. I ended up finding a good variety of wildflowers to photograph -- some of which had already finished blooming in South Carolina.

For a report on this field trip, please check out Jim's Blog.

Dupont State Forest is near the border of North and South Carolina and a lovely day trip from Greeneville, Spartanburg, or Asheville. The hikes are moderate and easily enjoyed by families and people at all levels of fitness. There are picnic areas and benches and trails that wind along the Little Green river in Transylvania county.

The falls is is a 125 ft (38 m) waterfall located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Its about a 2 mile round trip hike with other optional hikes nearby.

Last week, Ted (my youngest brother) and I were in the mountains of Western North Carolina for some photography under the guidance of Randy Sanger (Randall Sanger Photography), with Pisgah Inn as our base, a location especially appreciated by Ruth Ann and Beth (Ted's wife), who stayed behind while we went out for photos. We had a great time, even though we got to fewer waterfalls than intended; cloud cover often turned out to be less than forecast, and one day we had very strong wind (severe weather warning-strong) and even some sleet, along with more sunshine than we wanted. Sunrise/sunset conditions were generally poor, as well, with either too much or too little cloud cover. We kicked things off with a visit to DuPont State Recreational Forest, where we photographed Hooker Falls and Triple Falls, both on the Little River. This shot of Hooker Falls is from above the falls at the north end, and it makes the falls and river look narrower than when viewed from river level below the falls (in part because a section at the bottom of the frame is partially hidden). According to Kevin Adams, North Carolina Waterfalls (3rd edition), Hooker Falls has a drop of about 14 feet and is at 2,220 feet elevation.

I was having Flickr problems before leaving for North Carolina, and finally seem to have resolved them by dumping the Yahoo login; for the first time, I am able to sign in on all my devices (Yahoo always insisted I had the wrong password on any device except the one I had used to set the password). I hope to catch up, at least to some extent, over the next several days.

My Hubby, Matt Williams and I love to travel to the NC mountains to take pictures and enjoy the epic scenery. Every fall we set aside a long weekend to explore some place new.

This fall day last October at Dupont State Forest was full of gorgeous color, funny little critters, and roaring waterfalls. It was a fun day of adventure and we got some wonderful shots to show. :)

I love to be sneaky and take pictuers of Matt taking pictures when he has no idea. Haha.

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is water. I love photographing water because the possibilities are endless and water is one of mother nature's greatest tools for creating this amazing natural world we live it. Water always presents unique opportunities and challenges for photography. Even when I have been to a section of river or a waterfall many times, I always find new opportunities when I return to these places cause the water flow is never exactly the same. There is always a different and new element that water finds a way to add to a scene.

One of the other reasons why water is my favorite subject is because I just love being around it. I believe that just being around water, listening to its sound and receiving its energy is very beneficial to the soul and body.

In the case of this photo I have been to Triple Falls in Dupont State Forest many times to photograph it. On this trip I noticed a reflective pool of water at the base of the falls that I knew I wanted to utilize in some way. It was at the very end of the day and there was little light left to work with. So I under exposed the scene a bit and used some burning in lightroom to darken out any distracting foliage so all of the focus was on the falls and its reflection. A very peaceful scene and memory for me.

Comments and critiques are always welcome.

Triple Falls is a great waterfall to visit if you like to get up close to the falls. Although there are signs prohibiting climbing on the rocks, you can still get close to the water for some nice photos

High Falls in winter. 2009 was a very good year for great photo ops in winter!

High Falls is located in Transylvania County in western North Carolina between Brevard and Hendersonville. It is on Little River running through the DuPont State Forest and is one of (4) major waterfalls on the Little River within this area, the others being Triple Falls, Hooker Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Revisited Whitewater Falls this fall to try to get some fall colors captured.

Please take a look at my photography book, A Carolina Mountain Perspective.

I had just finished taking a few shots of Hooker Falls in Dupont when I noticed the early morning light hitting the fall foliage above the pool downstream from the falls, creating some very beautiful reflections.

I took this image last fall while on vacation. I processed one with almost the same composition but never processed this one. Looking forward to fall in the mountains.

DuPont State Recreational Forest is a 10,000 acre tract, located in Henderson and Transylvania counties of North Carolina. The name originates from the fact that the DuPont company arranged the sale of the original tract to the state. Adjacent tracts have since been purchased and added to the state forest. Portions of the forest formerly contained a manufacturing facility for the production of X-ray film. The forest was used to shoot scenes from the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans as well as the 2012 box office hit The Hunger Games.

Nearly 100 miles of multi-use trails and roads thread through the forest. The forest is widely used for many recreational activities, including mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, swimming (where permitted), wading, and kayaking. Destinations include mountaintop views (such as Cedar Rock Mountain), lakes (such as Lake Imaging, Lake Julia, Lake Dense, and Fawn Lake), and waterfalls, including: Bridal Veil Falls, Grassy Creek Falls, High Falls, Hooker Falls, Triple Falls & Wintergreen Falls.

Day trip to look for Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids in nearby, DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Although we were just a bit late for the best of the Large Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids, we did find a few that were still holding on. We had much better luck with the Small Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids. We also made a side trip for Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid, and we found a few pretty good ones.
