As Autumn is upon us, so are these beautiful waterfalls of North Carolina. This is a good time to prepare for color foliage and plan ahead where to visit for friendly hikes and trails for sights like this one. I took this last year during the summer months.

This lovely spot was about an hour north of Greenville, South Carolina near the lovely mountain village of Brevard, North Carolina. One of those days where the sunshine brilliantly exposed the changing leaves of the hardwood trees and for that day all is perfect. Take a walk in the woods this week, it is good for the soul.

A different perspective of this marvelous view of Triple Falls.

This was the first stop of the trail what we saw. We did make it a closer as the previous photo indicates.

Note: The Hunger Games movie was filmed here and used Dupont State Forest part of the movie.

I have been to Triple falls many times over the years and despite how beautiful it is I never seem to come away with something that I am really happy with. So my goal on this visit was to try and explore some new perspectives and try something different. I ended up spending a lot of my time photographing a heron downstream from this falls but still made it to the base of the lower falls shortly after sunset. I didn't have much light to work with at this point and decided to get as close as I possibly could to the falls and shoot downstream instead of the typical head on composition. I got completely soaked in the process but I like the different perspective. Usually the water flow isn't this high and therefore the water doesn't flow over this part of the rock face most of the time. I would love to know everyone's thoughts.

In western North Carolina, one of my favorite waterfalls we came across was this one at Dupont Forest near Brevard.

Film location for the "Hunger Games" was shot here.

After a 30 minute hike, you get to notice phenomenal waterfalls, which include High Falls and Hooker Falls.

Definitely was a good thing with all the rainstorms that produced inches and inches of rain. The waterfalls were very alive and timing couldn't of been any better.

After a bit of a hiatus from posting new images, I am finally back in the office to review this years' fall travel inventory of photographs.

To start off this #waterfallwednesday I thought I would first share this favorite from last year that I never got to post at the time: Autumn at Hooker Falls.

This is my favorite waterfall to photograph in the DuPont State Forest in North Carolina - The Land of Waterfalls.

Its ease of access makes it a very popular and highly photographed waterfall indeed, but despite its seemingly simple framing along the Little River, it provides an array of interesting compositions.

From this particular outing I liked this shot the best; the morning light had begun to peak through the tree canopy, allowing a soft glow to illuminate some of the foliage along the top of the falls that still carried a touch of autumn colors.

The cold November morning and recent rains also provided a decent water flow, creating a nice little bundle of mist at the base of the falls.

Moreover, the autumn leaves remaining at the very base of the rocky outcropping of the waterfall provided a few distinct highlights for the eye which I really liked.

I hope you enjoy this image as well, and stay tuned for many more scenes I will be sharing from this year's autumn adventures in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains.

Until then, take care y'all and thank you for stopping by to look!

The Dupont State Forest contains some of the most pastoral woods in North Carolina. Though there are places with taller mountains and more "wild" trails, one cannot help but be enchanted by a walk in this still somewhat recently protected forest.

Triple falls in Dupont State Forest is a beautiful waterfall especially when water levels are high. I love all of the subtle rock ledges that give the water flow such a smooth but textured look when photographed with a long exposure. There wasn't much light when I took this shot but I figured I would give it a try since the location of the moon was perfect. It would have been great to have a big full moon for this shot but still like the appearance of the half moon.

I really like how the water is hitting this giant boulder at the base of the falls

Sometimes a river can be as interesting as a waterfall

Two of the three falls at Triple Falls in the Dupont State Forest near Brevard, NC. Triple consists of three distinct cascades, totalling about 120' in vertical drop and was featured in the movie Last of the Mohicans. I wasn't able to get a great shot of all three cascades as the lighting made it almost impossible!

The water was really flowing at Hooker Falls in Dupont State Forest in North Carolina. The image was made using two step HDR with a Canon 80D and a Canon 17-40 mm f/4L lens.

It is always great when you plan on photographing a waterfall but end up capturing a blue heron fishing for dinner...gotta love the little surprises you find in nature. I had the pleasure of watching this heron at work and he did capture a good sized fish which I will share a photo of later. This is a beautiful scene in its own right but the heron just adds that special touch in my opinion.

Lower Tier

Triple Falls

Little River

DuPont State Forest

North Carolina

Triple Falls is one of those falls that when you first lay eyes on the whole thing you are simply awestruck. Standing at the overlook on the Triple Falls Trail you see the river tumble 180 ft over 3 distinct drops, it gives you the impression it's twice as large as it really is. Once you make your way down to the falls and you visit each tier you realize it's not as big as you thought, but it's still impressive. Of the three tiers my favorite is the lower, it has the greatest personality and offers numerous isolation opportunities. This is the the foot of the approximately 60 ft. tall tier, which also happens to be my favorite section to shoot. I love how the water races in from the right then doglegs over a small ledge creating this beautiful uniform flow. On a cloudy day you could spend hours here, heck on a sunny day we spent a couple at this spot before the sun finally ran us off.

DuPont State Recreational Forest, commonly known as DuPont Forest, is a 10,473-acre (42.38 km2) state forest, located in Henderson and Transylvania counties of North Carolina. The name originates from the fact that the DuPont company arranged the sale of the original tract to the state. Adjacent tracts have since been purchased and added to the state forest. Portions of the forest formerly contained a manufacturing facility for the production of X-ray film. The forest was used to shoot scenes from the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans as well as the 2012 box office hit The Hunger Games. Nearly 83 miles (134 km) of multi-use trails and roads thread through the forest. The forest is widely used for many recreational activities, including mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, swimming (where permitted), wading, and kayaking. Destinations include mountaintop views (such as Cedar Rock Mountain), lakes (such as Lake Imaging, Lake Julia, Lake Dense, and Fawn Lake), and waterfalls, including: Bridal Veil Falls, Grassy Creek Falls, High Falls, Hooker Falls, Triple Falls & Wintergreen Falls.

The aptly-named Triple Falls is the second of two waterfalls on Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest shot in the first session of the workshop brother Ted and I had last week with Randy Sanger (Randall Sanger Photography). According to Kevin Adams (North Carolina Waterfalls, 3rd edition), Triple Falls has a total drop of about 100 feet and is at 2,360 feet elevation. Unlike some other times during our NC workshop, we had good cloud cover here, so hot spots in the water from sunlight were not a problem. On the other hand, here and at most locations visited, strong water flow meant even a few seconds could be too long an exposure time, resulting in loss of water detail. This half-second exposure gave what I find a pleasing result. Triple Falls is at least near the top of my "most beautiful" list for the waterfalls we photographed last week, and perhaps deserves the #1 spot. Randy noted that people used to go along the river to get to Triple Falls, potentially quite dangerous; the lower route is now not legal, but a rather steep climb up a forest road takes the visitor to the cleared area, which provides a great line of sight to the falls.

North Carolina's Smoky Mountains at the Triple Falls area.

The DuPont State Forest is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Hendersonville and Brevard, North Carolina. Its 10,400 acres of forest feature four major waterfalls on the Little River and several on the Grassy Creek.

The original 7600 acre forest was established in 1996 through a generous bargain sale from the DuPont Corporation. In 2000, the Forest was expanded by two property additions, including the spectacular 2200 acre tract in the center of the Forest containing High Falls, Triple Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Triple Falls has lots of exposed rock along the river, allowing you to walk around until you find an interesting composition. This is the lowest of the three falls

The falls is named after Edmund Hooker, who operated a mill below the falls in the late 1800s

Hooker Falls is the last in a series of four falls on the Little River in the DuPont State Forest. Below the falls, it pools in a deep, wide basin that’s one of the most popular swimming holes in the summer. It's located near Brevard, NC.
