Triple Falls has lots of exposed rock along the river, allowing you to walk around until you find an interesting composition. This is the lowest of the three falls

The falls is named after Edmund Hooker, who operated a mill below the falls in the late 1800s

Hooker Falls is the last in a series of four falls on the Little River in the DuPont State Forest. Below the falls, it pools in a deep, wide basin that’s one of the most popular swimming holes in the summer. It's located near Brevard, NC.

Taken at DuPont State forest in North Carolina, when the sun peaks through the trees onto the trail that leads to the high Falls.

Visited Triple Falls a few years ago in the spring and wanted to return in the fall to capture it with some fall color. Wasn't disappointed.

With our recent rains I remembered the record flooding rains we had in May 2018. This is Triple Falls located in the DuPont State Recreational Area located between Brevard and Hendersonville, NC. Usually you'd see three distinct drops but with the heavy flow it became one continuous flow. Would have loved to have gotten this shot in autumn.

A man surveys the middle falls. Fortunately he stood still long enough not to ruin this image

With nearly seven inches of rain locally in the past few days, streams, rivers, and creeks are over their banks. I visited nearby Hooker Falls to see the effect of the high water and was amazed how high the water had risen. You could normally walk along the left side of the river and get right up to the waterfall. Not today. So I needed to shoot farther back. It was nice because there were small pools of water where its normally bare rock so that added some interest.

Taken at the Base of High Falls in the Dupont State Forest near Brevard, NC

We spent the last week in western NC hiking some very beautiful trails in Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest. It was great to experience new wonders with the dogs.

Visited Triple Falls a few years ago in the spring and wanted to return in the fall to capture it with some fall color. Wasn't disappointed.

~ Triple Falls ~

An ethereal scene unfolding at Triple Falls in the beautiful DuPont State Forest in Western North Carolina.

This was a shot I'd been wanting to capture for some time, and on this morning the fog was just right. Moreover, the recent Spring rains meant the falls were on full display.

I wanted to capture the falls emerging through the fog amidst the lush greens and blooms. I also decided to get low and close in an attempt to capture the grandeur of this multi-tiered waterfall.

In between exposures, standing in six inches of rushing water, I would pause, look around, and just be in awe of the majestic nature around me. I could wander these woods for hours and never tire of the scenery - it is quite easy to get lost in the beauty of this place!

Of all the beautiful cascades located in this mystical forest, this upper section of Triple Falls is my favorite due to the various compositional opportunities available, and I hope you like this one?

Furthermore, what is your favorite North Carolina waterfall?

I'd be curious to find out and look forward to reading your thoughts and responses in the comments below.

Until next time, have a wonderful weekend, and stay safe in your journeys!

Day trip to look for Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids in nearby, DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Although we were just a bit late for the best of the Large Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids, we did find a few that were still holding on. We had much better luck with the Small Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids. We also made a side trip for Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid, and we found a few pretty good ones.

The Little River, upstream from Hooker Falls. The fisherman in the photo was having a good day, as I saw two or three nice brown trout caught and released while we each enjoyed this mountain stream.

Having interrupted my presentation of photos from our recent trip west to show the preceding church photo, I decided to add another photo from last April's outing in the mountains of North Carolina. This particular perspective on Triple Falls doesn't provide quite as clear a view of all three sections as the photo posted earlier (below), but all remain visible because the trees were not yet fully leafed out. I like the way the trees frame the falls, and the tones and contrasts provided in this B&W treatment by the various shades of spring green and the blossoms on some of the trees. Triple Falls has a total drop of about 100 feet and is at 2,360 feet elevation. Here and at most locations visited, strong water flow meant even a few seconds could be too long an exposure, resulting in loss of water detail; this is a half-second exposure (converted using Lightroom Classic CC B&W09 profile).

In terms of visiting falls? This is my new favorite. DuPont SF is absolutely gorgeous, and the hike is mostly level and just the right length to feel like you got a workout (about 0.6 miles).

This is the rare waterfall that is just as beautiful frozen in time as it is taken in long-exposure, likely because the water does not fall so much as slide in waves. I may process and post one like that in the future (when I'm bored and out of new photos haha).

I did not go down toward the base of the falls because I was on a schedule, and I don't like to do anything I'm really uncertain of when I'm alone. But next time!!

Continuing my 24 hour "Tour de Waterfalls" in the Brevard, North Carolina area last weekend, this is Triple Falls, one of the more popular falls in the DuPont State Forest. The water volume was HUGE, the mid-day sun was peeking in and out playing havoc with my efforts and there were people crawling all over the rocks at the base of the lower fall so I only managed a few shots. It looks like it would be a fun place to hang out and get wet in the summer. The trail to the falls is only about half a mile, mostly uphill.

Water flow on Little River was strong when my brother Ted and I visited these falls as part of a private workshop with Randy Sanger (Randall Sanger Photography) last spring. Although we saw several waterfalls during our April 25-28 stay in the western North Carolina mountains, we left unexplored many falls on our list. Information in Kevin Adams's North Carolina Waterfalls (3rd ed.) says Hooker Falls has a drop of about 14 feet and is at 2,220 feet elevation; Adams also notes that these falls earlier were known as Mill Shoals, now named for late 19th century miller Edmund Hooker, whose mill was below the falls.

This is a photo I took last year while spending a day in Dupont State Forest. It was towards the end of the day and I had put on my macro lens to capture some fall leaves when I found this...object floating in the wind. I ended up really liking the delicate nature of this photo and this tiny thing in the wind. Got to love the little surprises you can find in a random bush on the side of a trail.

This is one of my favorite spots on the Little River in Dupont State Forest. This shot is taken farther down river from the last photo I posted with the Heron. Something about this particular cascade has great character, I love how the one sections fans out into the foreground. It is also a beautiful section of the river where it widens out and there are a lot of small cascades and large boulders that make this section unique. I also like it because it is easy to access and I have never seen anyone else at this spot.

Triple Falls flows on the Little River Through the Dupont State Forrest. Triple Falls has three distinct cascades totaling about 120 feet in vertical drop. Scenes from The hunger Games and Last of the Mohicans were filmed here.

The 10,473-acre forest is managed by the NC Forest Service. The forest contains four major waterfalls on the Little River, five lakes, and 82 miles of trails and roads.
