It's not everyday that the Taoiseach comes to call on you....here's an interesting entry in our Lough Avoher Hut in the recently designated Wild Nephin Wilderness Area - "Enda Kenny, Taoiseach"
Con motivo de los 50 años del inicio de la labor del Opus Dei en el Paraguay, se realizó un cálido acto de celebración en Asunción, con la asistencia de unas 450 personas.
Durante el evento, que tuvo lugar el 7 de abril en el Centro de Convenciones del Shopping Mariscal López de Asunción, se presentó el documental “San Josemaría y el Paraguay – testimonios”.
Estuvieron como panelistas el Vicario del Opus Dei en Paraguay, Pbro. Dr. Luis Caballero; el realizador del documental, Juan Martín Ezratty; y una periodista local, Patricia Lafuente, que brindó su testimonio sobre la positiva influencia de la Obra en su vida.
El P. Luis Caballero destacó la conveniencia de mostrar este cincuentenario con obras. Con ese objetivo se encargó la realización del video que, en 25 minutos, recoge testimonios personales de paraguayos de diversos ámbitos intercalados con fragmentos de la predicación de San Josemaría Escrivá. La cinta da a conocer también algunas de las numerosas labores sociales que impulsa el Opus Dei en Paraguay.
Juan Martín compartió con la audiencia algunas anécdotas de la producción. Ezratty, Licenciado en Comunicación por la Universidad Austral de Buenos Aires, especializado en Comunicación Audiovisual Corporativa, es el Propietario y director de la productora Dígito Identidad Visual, y ha realizado importantes trabajos entre los que se puede destacar a modo de ejemplo el documental “Francisco, un Papa entre la gente”.
Patricia Lafuente, por su parte, agradeció con emoción el ejemplo de vida de numerosas personas de la Obra a quienes fue conociendo durante los últimos 20 años y relató cómo, hace seis años, comenzó a frecuentar los medios de formación que se imparten en la Prelatura. Descubrió así un amplio horizonte de vida cristiana y actualmente es Cooperadora del Opus Dei.
La nota artística de la noche estuvo a cargo de la Sra. Teresa Vega de Vergara, quien ejecutó en arpa “Mis noches sin ti”. Teresa compartió con la audiencia la emoción sentida hace 20 años cuando ejecutó el arpa para San Josemaría.
El evento, de calidez familiar, sirvió de recordatorio de las valiosas enseñanzas de San Josemaría, que nos animan a buscar la unión con Dios en la vida cotidiana; y permitió apreciar algunos de los frutos en la sociedad paraguaya.
Fue posible comprobar cómo una fe genuina, encarnada en el trabajo, en la familia, en las relaciones sociales, mejora la vida de las personas y enriquece la cultura: es fuente de justicia, paz y desarrollo. Y es, sin duda, “un aporte importantísimo al bien común”, como señaló la presentadora del acto, la Sra. Lourdes Benítez de González.

This is my TRENDMASTERS C-Watch Press Kit, which came in this very cool box. Intended as a promotion item and made in a very limited supply from 1999. This image shows the 4 pages of documents that accompanied this Press Kit, that fit into the cardboard sleeve on the opened top part of this box. Awesome.
A number of documents have survived which relate to Sheffield's early workhouses. An insight into workhouse life is given in an extract from the ‘Rules for the Sheffield Workhouse’, c.1750 (pictured):
'‘…the Master stands in the inside of the Room… Lets in the poor one at a time then… hears their Complaint if they think it proper they take them into the [work]house… if not they turn them ought [out]… lets in another poor until all is heard…’

The San Diego Air and Space Museum houses a large Special Collection from Patrol Squadron 106. VPB-106 flew PB4Ys and saw heavy combat in the South Pacific during the Second World War. The Museum houses many records from the VPB-106 including Squadron musters, reunion abums, VHS Tapes, Action Reports, memoirs, combat diaries, misc documents.

I got this book (Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It) from the library and I've made a few recipes from it. I've been making a lot of these things for years so they weren't new. I was really suprized by the homemade ketchup - I usually hate homemade ketchup but this is great. Of course I changed the recipe a bit.

Letter from Lieutenant Colonel William Nisbet Ponton of the 15th Argyll Light Infantry to Sir Mackenzie Bowell concerning the installation of two 24-pounder cannon at Victoria Park in Belleville, Ontario.
Text: Dear Sir Mackenzie,-
I was very much pleased to receive your letter to-day showing, as usual, your interest in matters concerning us.
I want to keep one cannon at the Drill Shed, mounted, of course. There are three in all and two would be all that would be necessary for the Park. I had to pay the freight on these cannon myself. Probably you could get three carriages by the kindness of the Minister as easily as two. Colonel A. A. Farley indicated to me privately that there might be some available.
Captain Weatherbe, the head of the Engineering Division of the Militia Department, very kindly sent me up detailed drawing of the carriages required for 24 Pounder Guns, which I could send down, if it was desired.
The weight of each Gun is about 2 1/2 tons, the length of each is about 9 feet. They were sent to me in October, 1896, under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Macpherson of the Stores Department. The Guns are technically described as "Ordnance Guns, S. B., 24 Pr. 50 cwt."
Hoping that you will be able to arrange for the Carriages and assuring you that the Regiment and the whole of the Citizens of Belleville will appreciate your interest in the matter, and will also appreciate the action of the Honorable, the Minister, in the matter, in granting your and our request,

Manuscript title: Othon de Grandson, Poems
Manuscript summary: Othon de Grandson, knight and poet, distinguished himself both through his verses and through his heroic deeds during the Hundred Years War. He was an adviser to Count Amadeus VII of Savoy. After the death of the count, he fled to England. After his return to the land of Vaud he died in an ordeal by battle in the form of a duel in Bourg-en-Bresse in the year 1397. In addition, Othon de Grandson's poetry introduced Valentine's Day to a broader public, though it had previously been celebrated only in Anglo-Saxon regions.

Eliza Sophia Aldred, daughter of Thomas Dove and Mary Aldred. Thomas Dove Aldred was a farmer at Little Melton, Melton Parva, Norfolk born circa 1801, Norwich, died 1870, Little Melton.
By his wife Mary he had the following children:

He married his second wife, Martha Gates, in 1843 and by her has a son, John Edward Aldred born 1844.
They farmed the land pre 1841-1881, after the death of Thomas D Aldred Snr. Joseph M. Aldred farmed until his death in 1874. Eliza and John were at Ironside Lodge, Earlham Road, Norwich, along with Martha, nee Gates, Aldred, in 1881. By 1886 Eliza was admitted to an Asylum, John was living at 92 Edinburgh Road, Earlham Road.

To celebrate the spring birthdays, people at work got together and wrote stories about each of the birthday people. The premise was that each person write a single line of the story. This is my story!
Amanda had just boarded the flight to India, where she was scheduled to run the Mumbai Marathon. The top secret documents she was hiding in the sides of her sneakers seemed to pulse with the pounding of her nervous heartbeat. "I hope the microchip doesn't interfere with the time chip for the race," she thought as she wiped the telltale beads of sweat from her forehead. She ground her running shoe into the reddish dirt, but as she did her foot touched a note that said , "Why is there dirt on this plane?" "There must be a trivia question," she thought. "Hmmm....tricky!" And why is there red dirt on the plane? "Hmm... a mystery and a trivia question. This going be an interesting flight!"
After sitting on the runway for another half hour, the plane began to taxi and prepare for tackoff. Once in the air, Amanda was treated to the best cup of chai she had ever tasted. "Even more mysterious!" thought Amanda. "What kind of plane ride is this?!"
She then looked to her left into seat 27B. Hmm... this trip is going to be VERY interesting. A wolverine was in 27 B, and she was enjoying the chai too! The wolverine was dressed in running shoes, shorts, and a Boston Marathon number 50,795. Amanda immediately started a conversation about the number of paper cups discarded by the runners. She was hoping to start a campaign in India to substitute carbo cups. The wolverine said: Let's team up to recycle all the marathon numbers after the race and use the recycled paper to produce books for school-age kids.

(13th September) is my 21st birthday and I thought about doing this page a little differently. Obviously because it's my birthday, I've aged and time is passing.
So I decided to take some wrapping paper, ribbons, plastic, tiny parts of envelopes &tissue paper and take a colourful memento of my 21st birthday!

I thought the idea was pretty need and subtle. It means a lot to me and that's all that counts.
INTRODUCTION. This is a scan and transcript of a bunch of old family letters from about 1820 to 1880. In the late 1870's, my 3rd great grandfather Henry Claydon packed up the family in Solihull, England (near Birmingham) and moved to Greenfield Center, New York, USA. Two others in the Claydon family came to New York before Henry: James Claydon, brother of Henry's father Thomas in 1848, and Thomas, son on James' brother William. James and 2nd wife Charity Rowland corresponded with Rowland/Greene and Claydon relatives in the USA and back in England. The letters contained a huge amount of family information that enabled the building of a detailed family tree. Some of the letters imply or describe life in England and the USA western frontier, including family, farming life, and religious life.

James Claydon, the eldest member of the family in the USA, settled in Greenfield Center, New York. He left a variety of documents, including deeds, contracts, receipts, and letters.

You cannot think how very pleased I was to hear from you and to hear that you and your dear wife are both enjoying good health and happy together may God ever keep you so, I have never heard anything of my poor brother Thomas for 30 years. Richard Jones of Hethe, the baker and Wesleyan preacher is dead but his widow is still living. She is 84 years, and Taylor Cleaver is dead, but his widow is still living. I have been very ill lately but thank God I am now better. My husband is well and in regular work thanks God I have five children. I lost my eldest about 12 months [end of page]

Maria Lake, niece of James Claydon, has six children: son, dead one year ago at age 29; another son, a daughter in sevice, and three others. Had brother who moved to America, Thomas, now deceased. He has 2 or more boys. Maria's youngest sister is Ann Hollowell living in Brooklyn, NY.
