One day in the series of daily newspapers from March 1945 to August 31, 1945. This daily posting of 1945 newspapers from Shamokin PA will give the reader a snapshot of what it was like to read the reports and editorials that document the end of WW2. Read Ernie Pyle on the editorial page, see what movies were playing, follow the accounts of the discovery of the horrors of Nazi Germany. See the funeral of Roosevelt and the removal of Churchill form office. Follow our Marines as they move through the Pacific to liberate the islands. The local news and commentary will be covered, also. All of it will be here each day as the war ends and the enemy is punished.

Letter from family in Russia to Henry Wedel

The letter that is attached was sent in 1934.

I have no idea if these people were relatives of the Wedel family or what. For some reason this packet was saved.

Bolsão em tecido, prendedor de caneta, elástico para nada se perder. Tecido interno nacional 100% algodão.

A friend of mine recently purchased this document box at the auction of another friend. The initials "S. T." appear in the pattern of brass tacks on the lid. If only it could talk!

I was in two minds about what to do with my car. It needed lots of prohibitively expensive work, but still looked and drove well.

A scrap yard would have given me £100, but I took a chance and stuck it in the local car auction...

I wondered where the team got their ideas from...Sweet Valley High!!

I found this book at the local recycling centre today!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the title...and the list of previous titles really made me laugh when I started to read them as FlickrFriday themes...number 55 might be a hard act and 54 one of the more contentious subjects but there could be a few candidates in there...what's your favourite?

And today it's actually my birthday...what a gift this book is!!

Title: Roll call votes relating to the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson on Articles II, III, and XI., 05/26/1868

Production Date: May 26, 1868

Creator(s): U.S. Senate. (03/04/1789 - )

Roll call votes relating to the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson on Articles II, III, and XI., 05/26/1868 ; Senate Papers Pertaining to the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson, ca. 1867 - ca. 1869; Records of the U.S. Senate, 1789 - 2005; Record Group 46; National Archives.

The first Senate vote in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson was taken on May 16, 1868. Article XI was called the “omnibus article” because it combined all of the charges against the President. As a result of 19 voting “Not Guilty” and 35 voting “Guilty” the Senate fell 1 vote short of the two-thirds majority required for removal. After a 10-day recess, the Senate reconvened and voted on Articles II and III. In each case, the result was identical: Johnson was not guilty by a single vote. The Senate then voted to end the trial.

These letters document the process by which Joseph Chamberlain was able to secure Andrew Carnegie’s substantial gift of £50,000 some of which was put towards the construction of new buildings for science teaching at the university.

At first Carnegie was reluctant for his gift to be used to fund additional academic posts and wanted it to be spent on new buildings for science teaching. Chamberlain tried to explain that the Mason College building already provided what was required and that the money was desperately needed to fund new posts. Carnegie was convinced that whatever buildings and apparatus already existed at Mason College would not be suitable for a modern scientific university and threatened to withdraw his offer unless the money was spent as he wished, prompting Chamberlain’s diplomatic response explaining recent scientific investment in Mason College but promising to seek Carnegie’s advice regarding the purchase of additional apparatus and to arrange a visit to higher education institutions in North America to see scientific facilities there if he was given freedom to spend the money as it was needed. Carnegie agreed to this, and conceded that part of his donation could be used for endowment if part was spent on buildings and equipment.

An Advisory committee was formed, and its members visited North America in November 1899 and British colleges in early 1900

A local newspaper report.

It's cool what you can find if you dig around. The first few pages of this old beast (the 4.2 litre Spare Parts Catalogue) are pretty beat, but everything is in there, and there are some interesting notes from the mechanics.
